Napoli have released a statement denouncing alleged attacks and allegations about their players after president Aurelio De Laurentiis decided to send the club in ‘ritiro’.
The Azzurri players were sent away from the city and their families after winning only once in their last nine matches, while coach Rafa Benitez did not hold a pre-match press conference amid speculation about his future.
“The president, players and technical staff are outraged at the reiterated attacks from some media, based on allegations or gossip devoid of all foundation,” read a statement on the club’s official website.
“Fantastical incidents are described involving many players and their lifestyles, trying to compromise their image and professionalism.
“It becomes paradoxical that we are forced to deny things that are not true. Already yesterday president De Laurentiis confirmed the club does not intend to follow any gossip, because it is confident in the professionalism of its players.
“We are sorry to note some media today again prove they are clearly affected by an attitude that puts Napoli in the spotlight.
“Napoli will not stand for it. You cannot joke with the professionalism of those who work at Napoli, at all levels, and crush people via imaginative reconstructions.
“Napoli have therefore instructed their lawyers to act in every opportune arena to look after the honour of its players.”
