Roma’s Brazilian centre back has admitted that he thought he would not make it through an operation after having been diagnosed with a cavernoma.
The player underwent surgery last December to remove clusters of abnormal brain cells after complaining of acute dizziness, but feared the worst.
“I thought I was going to die,” the former Corinthians defender told Il Tempo. “Doctors told me it wasn’t cancer but I was still petrified. It wasn’t till after at least a couple of months that the specialist told me how things had gone.”
The 28-year-old has begun training again with teammates and is looking forward to pulling on the Roma shirt once more.
“I’ve already started running and heading the ball and will undergo a fitness test in the next three weeks.
“My aim now is to win a league title with the club.”
