The Lunatic Fringe – Why Serie A Should Embrace Balotelli and Cassano

Serie A has often been home to some of the most colourful and charismatic figures in world football. It has also been home to some of the most controversial. The ‘bad boys’ have often graced Serie A providing the neutrals with entertainment whilst often causing the supporters of the clubs they’d play for to pull their own hair out.

Most importantly, they got people talking!

As the saying goes, controversy creates cash. The cult-figure players often have their own unique following, their own unique fan base of admirers who love the way these enigma-footballers go about their business – on and off the pitch. The bad boys are entertaining. They put bums on seats, get people talking and get people’s attention, which is what Serie A needs.

Mario Balotelli & Antonio Cassano are bad boys who’d fit the bill. The pair played a key role in Italy’s run to the final of Euro 2012, but have been on the outside looking in ever since the ill-fated World Cup campaign in Brazil last year.

Call them crazy, call them unstable, one could very well refer to them as The Lunatic Fringe and the other as The Charismatic Enigma. They’d fit the bill. Perhaps often overlooked is how well these 2 hit the high-notes when on–song.

Antonio Cassano was part of a Sampdoria that qualified for the UEFA Cup, a Coppa Italia final and the Champions League a few seasons later. Cassano would go on to win Serie A and the Italian Super Cup with AC Milan before switching allegiances to the the blue-half of Milan by joining Inter in 2013. At Parma, Cassano would once again shine as the Ducali would achieve a top six finish and rekindle memories of Parma sides from the glory days under the ownership of Calisto Tanzi.

Mario Balotelli has been a winner in his own right. Call him controversial, label him as crazy, the enigma that is Mario Balotelli has a trophy-haul of nine trophies to his name. Part of Inter’s treble-winners in 2010, he was also part of the first Manchester City squad to win a trophy for 35 years by winning the FA Cup, as well as providing the assist for Sergio Aguero’s last-minute winning-goal on the final day of the 2011/12 Premier League season. Balotelli was part of the Italy squad that finished second at Euro 2012 and third at the Confederations Cup a year later, with his performance in the 2012 semi-final against Germany being an international highlight. Both players are winners. Love them or hate them.

Italy has the chance to get the globe watching have bad boys. Waiting to see what madness either one could conjour next. With Cassano and Balotelli causing controversy, dividing opinion, but more importantly getting people to talk about their behaviour in Serie A is a good thing for the league. They will get eyes watching Italian football because one can expect the unexpected with the likes of Balotelli and Cassano.

With Ravel Morrison joining Lazio this season, one should hope to see the other two bad boys of world football in Serie A. Their behaviour will get the world talking, keep us entertained and never seize to amaze us with their antics. Serie A might not be able to sign-up the most expensive players, but it may sign up the most entertaining.

Nobody has stepped up to the plate and signed either one of these two enigmas of Italian football, one can only hope this will change as the league will be a poorer place without them.

Hysaj signs 5 year deal with Napoli

Maurizio Sarri continues to usher in his former talents at Napoli. First, Valdifiori and now Hysaj. Reports from Corriere dello Sport suggest Sarri wanted to package Hysaj with Valdifiori a month or so ago but the deal is finally complete.

The Albanian fullback enjoyed some solid years at Empoli but this is certainly a huge jump into Italy’s top flight. The fullback is just what the doctor ordered given an aging Christian Maggio. A five year contract worth €600,000 was just signed and the class of 1994 Hysaj is on his way to take in the sights and sounds of the iconic Neapolitan coastline.

Sarri finally has this long awaited piece to his puzzle; surely his drone will be fixated on the movements and tactical awareness of the youngster given Sarri’s use of drones in camp. The medical visit could come as soon as tomorrow and has Napoli fans anticipating what kind of impact the young Albanian could provide.

What Napoli fans can expect…

By the numbers: Vidal, the player Juve are losing out on

Arturo Vidal has packed his bags and is leaving the city of Turin and his ex-Club Juventus, bound for the German-giants, Bayern Munich.

Juventus gave up their Chilean midfielder for €37 million that will see him in the Bayern shirt for the next four years. Following in the footsteps of Pirlo and Tevez, Vidal is next out the door, but how much will the bianconeri miss out from his services?

While Juve have picked up a number of key offensive players including Paulo Dybala and Mario Mandzukic during the summer mercato period, Vidal was a huge part of the squad that almost secured the Italian treble, falling only to Barcelona in the Champions League final last season.

We know Vidal was brought to Bayern to fill the hole left in the midfield by Bastian Schewinsteiger, who signed for Manchester United earlier this summer and while the signing is a huge gain for the German champions, what does Vidal’s departure leave for the Italian champions?

Age: May 22, 1987 (28 years old)

Height: 5’11”

Appearances by Club:

  • 2005-2007 Colo-Colo: 36 appearances, 2 goals
  • 2007-2011 Bayer Leverkusen: 117 appearances, 15 goals
  • 2011-2015 Juventus: 124 appearances, 35 goals
  • Chile International Squad: 69 appearances, 12 goals

Coming to Turin in 2011 from Bayer Leverkusen for 10.5 million euros on a five-year deal, Vidal helped Juve win the Serie A title four times in four consecutive seasons. Under coach Antonio Conte at the time, he found a way to play Vidal alongside Andrea Pirlo and Claudio Marchisio to create one of the most well structured midfields in Italy.

The Chilean midfielder has always been one of Juventus’ most powerful players on the field. He offers the game a certain type of grit and presence, especially in the 18-yard box, that not many other players can provide. His ability to deliver in big games is uncanny, as we have seen him score critical goals, especially during his time in Turin. In 2012 during the Champions League group stage, Vidal scored the equalizer against Chelsea after being down two goals in the first half. The following season he scored his first hat trick against Copenhagen, also in the Champions League group stage. Most recently, the twenty-eight year old scored the only goal in a 1-0 victory over Sampdoria this past season to secure Juve’s fourth straight Scudetto. Vidal also helped Chile win the Copa America tournament this summer.

While Juve could use the revenue of Vidal’s transfer to offset the costs of their busy summer mercato so far, it surely will be difficult to replace a midfield that was once controlled by Pirlo, Marchisio and Vidal. Although the bianconeri still have players such as Paul Pogba – who has scored 20 times in three years, as compared to Vidal’s 35 goals in four years – Vidal is certainly a player that will be difficult to replace and will surely be missed by Allegri.

How Napoli Could Line Up This Season

Napoli are preparing for a new season and a new dynasty under Italian tactician Maurizio Sarri, who was greatly praised for his efforts with Empoli last season.

Napoli’s made several new acquisitions, but according to Sky here’s how the Partenopei could line up this season. 11824988_656866451117669_3331305222871254462_n

Elseid Hysaj who is expected to come over from Empoli, made over 109 appearances for the club over a 3 year period. The 21 year old is a defender who can play on both flanks.

The most noticable difference in Sarri’s tactical set up compared to Rafa Benitez is the 4-3-1-2, which should benefit players like Lorenzo Insigne and Manolo Gabbiadini.

The Emergence of Rodrigo Ely

A.C. Milan has struggled to find quality defensive help for quite some time and have been relying mostly on free transfers and buy-low options. However, the emergence of 21-year old Brazilian Rodrigo Ely through the pre-season provides some optimism that maybe they have found a solid man to fill the void

In this current era of football, quality defenders are scarce and the teams that have either the sufficient funds or the proper scouting emerge as the ones to find the premium talent. We have witnessed players like David Luiz make record transfers to elite clubs due to heavy demand from European giants to find the best, while others go the route of recognizing upside and value in prospects in order to fulfill the void many clubs have. Take former Roma youngster and current PSG man Marquinhos for example. The Parisian side were willing to shell out over €30m to get him into their squad because of what was just mentioned. Now, it seems Milan and Napoli could continue the trend as both rate promising Italian center half Alessio Romagnoli highly but seem hesitant on matching the Giallorossi’s €30m price tag. So naturally, if one does not want to pay this much for a prospect, they must find the “diamond in the rough.” The value in the market that seems to be hidden behind all of the lucrative sums of money being thrown around this summer.

One player that seems to have provided a spark for a club who covets a massive upgrade in the back is the unlikely 21-year old Rodrigo Ely. The rossoneri had brought in the likes of Alex, Gabriel Paletta, Salvatore Bocchetti (returned to Spartak Moskow) and others who have failed to hammer down one of the two center back slots. Cristian Zapata and Philippe Mexes are streaky defenders who can’t be trusted to provide consistency which has forced Sinisa Mihajlovic to explore all options while Romagnoli’s transfer remains in limbo.

Ely, a former Gremio youth product, arrived to the Milan organization back in 2010 as a member of the Primavera side. A few loan spells at Reggina Calcio, Varese and Avellino, the Brazilian finds himself in the mix as a solid candidate for Mihajlovic’s squad for the upcoming season. The player returned to Milan this summer as nothing more than another body who would perhaps be loaned out once again. However, the former Sampdoria manager has seen something in this kid through the extensive training sessions which has opened up an opportunity for the youngster to make a statement this season.

Rodrigo Ely started in the club’s previous two matches in the International Champions Cup against Inter and Real Madrid in which he showed maturity, confidence and quality in the back. What made his performances more impressive is the fact that he has been immediately thrown into a starting role this summer to prove himself and he has not disappointed. In fact, the Brazil U-23 and ex-Italian international has upped his play to the point that he is observed as someone who could be a key man moving forward. Sure, many can argue that these matches don’t test the player and his mentality to overcome the struggles that typically occur during the season but we can only judge him based on the performances he turns in.

Defensive performances are awfully tough to critique which is why one must watch the matches in order to observe the positioning, awareness, intelligence and composure. The Raiola-represented player was looked at as nothing more than a bottom-of-the-depth chart player upon returning but Mihajlovic sees something more in this kid that perhaps flew under the radar with past Milan coaches.

Rodrigo Ely has performed his way into being an option for the club this season and there is reason to believe that perhaps Mihajlovic has a distinct plan to integrate youth into the system which is what has been lacking for quite some time. Ely, Milan’s “diamond in the rough” for 2015-16?

When coaches were players: Giovanni Trapattoni

Before becoming one of the most successful coaches in Italian football club history (hold the “Italian”), Giovanni Trapattoni was a tenacious mediano (holding midfielder), sometimes employed as a stopper (grosso modo a man-marking central defender).

Plying his trade between the 18-yard boxes, Trapattoni’s primary qualities were physical (fitness and stamina), which he was able to pair well with a good passing technique that was key to offensive transitions.

Whilst il Trap is known for his successful years coaching Juventus (with whom he won every trophy in his ten-year tenure) and Inter (with whom he won the scudetto in 1989) Trapattoni spent his entire playing career (save for 10 appearances at Varese) on the other side of the Naviglio, with AC Milan under the legendary Nereo Rocco.

©ravezzani/lapresse

Trapattoni was born not far from the city he ended up playing in, in the peripheral small town of Cusano Milanino in 1939.

In 1957 he signed a professional contract with the rossoneri with whom he played for 14 seasons, scoring 6 goals in his 364 appearances (all competitions). Trapattoni became a steady fixture in the Italian national team, although he missed the 1962 World Cup due to injury, earning 17 appearances with the Azzurri, and scoring one goal.

With Milan he conquered the first Champion’s Cup for an Italian club, in 1963 against Benfica (2-1 was the final score in favour of the rossoneri) – a team that featured one of the greatest African-born footballers of all time: the legendary Eusebio.

Trapattoni doubled his European Champions Cup tally in 1969 against Ajax (4-1) the year after he won the Cup Winner’s Cup against Hamburg (2-0). Domestically, Trapattoni won two scudetti and a Coppa Italia with Rocco’s rossoneri.

Trapattoni developed a knack for beating legends. In May of 1963, Italy hosted Brazil in Milan for a friendly. Trapattoni was assigned the arduous task of man-marking Edson Arantes Do Nascimiento, nicknamed O Rey, known to the entire world simply as Pelé. The Brazilian was flustered and was subbed off after less than 30 minutes, and Trapattoni’s fame grew as “the man who stopped Pelé”.

Italia-Brasile_3-0,_Milano,_12_maggio_1963,_Trapattoni_e_PeléWhen Trapattoni was reminded of this he humbly played down the incident: “The truth is that he wasn’t fully fit that day. Tired. I was a good player but let’s put Pelé aside. That man was a Martian”.

Fantacalcio: How Will Juventus Line Up Next Season?

With Juventus undergoing a revolution of sorts at the club, there are big question marks over the bianconeri’s starting eleven going into the new season.

After nearly winning the treble last season, changes were to be expected in order to renew the hunger in the team. The departures of Arturo Vidal, Andrea Pirlo and Carlos Tevez only confirmed this and signaled that Allegri’s side were in for a busy summer. The Italian champions went out and purchased Paulo Dybala, Mario Mandzukic, Simone Zaza, Daniele Rugani and Sami Khedira among others. With over a month left in the transfer window, Juventus are still active on the market and have reportedly set their sights on signing a left back and an attacking midfielder. While a plethora of names are being linked, a few options have emerged as front-runners and look likely to make the move to Turin. Let’s look at how Allegri’s new-look Juventus may shape up going into next season.

Following Allegri’s appointment as Juventus boss, the Serie A giants were firmly built for Antonio Conte’s 3-5-2. A few months into his tenure, the former Milan tactician decided it was time to stamp his mark on the side and import his preferred 4-3-1-2. Allegri’s decision to do so bore fruits as he saw his side conquer Italy for the fourth time in a row and picked off some of the top European giants. Many still believed that Juventus, however, were still wining off the merits of Conte’s work. Whether this is true or not is up for debate and is a piece in its own. Next season, on the other hand, will be a different story as this summer has been full of upheaval. Vidal, Pirlo and Tevez, three players who were at the heart of all things good for Juve for the past few seasons, have moved to greener pastures and have since been replaced. Due to this, integrating the new signings is of paramount importance to the future success of this team. Given the many rumors surrounding the Italians’ transfer activity, there are a few different options for the remaining two question marks in their starting eleven.

In goal, there will be no surprises as Gianluigi Buffon is still the undisputed number one. Neto, however, was brought in from Fiorentina and will act as his understudy. In defense, there remains one big question mark. Stephan Lichtsteiner will likely feature at right back for Allegri’s side. This should come as no surprise given the player’s consistency and professionalism over the course of his Juventus career. In the center of defense, there won’t be any crazy changes either. Daniele Rugani has been brought in to replace Angelo Ogbonna while Leonardo Bonucci, Andrea Barzagli and Giorgio Chiellini will once again form the nucleus of their back-line. Now this is where it gets interesting. On the left hand side of defense, the bianconeri have an ageing Patrice Evra and Paolo De Ceglie. While the latter is definitely not an option, Evra has proven to be a more than adequate candidate for the job. Juventus, however, are looking for another left back before the window closes. Recently, they have been heavily linked to three players: Porto’s Alex Sandro, Atletico Madrid’s Guilherme Siqueira and Monaco’s Layvin Kurzawa. Out of the three defenders, Siqueira is the most realistic but I get the feeling, that he convinces the Juventus management the least. Acquiring Alex Sandro or Kurzawa won’t be easy but will prove rewarding in the long run.

In recent years, Juventus’ midfield has often been the difference in tight games. Given Pirlo and Vidal’s departures, the Italian champions will have to look to different players to drive the team forward. Claudio Marchisio is expected to fill in the maestro’s shoes while Sami Khedira will take the Chilean’s place in the team. The duo are certainly very good players but are quite different to their predecessors. In many ways, Allegri will have to reshape the team and refine his tactics. In order to accomplish this, Juventus have began targeting a variety of attacking midfielders. Recently, major media outlets in Italy have reported that the bianconeri were after Shalke’s Julian Draxler, Bayern Munich’s Mario Goetze and Wolfsburg’s Kevin De Bruyne. Out of the three players, Draxler is the clear favorite due to his price-tag and wages. I do believe that in the near future, the German international will be donning the famous black and white stripes. In addition to signing an attacking midfielder, there is a good chance that the onus in the midfield will fall on Paul Pogba’s shoulders. Moving forward, make no mistake, this will be his team.

In attack, there has already been heavy investments made by the club in response to Carlos Tevez’s departure and Fernando Llorente’s expected sale. Dybala, Zaza and Mandzukic have been purchased to complete the revolution and will all look to build a lethal partnership with Alvaro Morata. Given Dybala’s price-tag and immense talent, he will likely begin the season up front with Morata. You simply do not bench a player who you just spent €32m to bring in. Moreover, the former Palermo man offers something different in comparison to his teammates and should emerge as a vital piece of this team’s attack. Mandzukic and Zaza should not worry about this too much as there are plenty of games to go around. Under Allegri’s heavy rotation, everyone will get their chance to prove themselves.

Juventus’ success next season will largely depend on their new acquisition’s ability to adjust to life at their new club. Given their rivals massive spending campaigns, they will need to do this sooner rather than later. As of right now, they do appear to still be the clear favorites going into the new season because of their championship pedigree but it must be said that the gap is closing. Due to this, it will be interesting to see just who joins Juventus by the end of the summer. Until then, this is how they may line up.

Player Focus: Ricardo Kishna

The latest of Ajax’s prestigious academy products to make a move abroad, Ricardo Kishna has joined Italian club Lazio for a fee of €4 million. The Dutchman will have a tough time breaking into Stefano Pioli’s lineup, but is nonetheless one of the league’s most exciting young players going into the new season.

What you need to know

Full name: Ricardo Kishna

Date of Birth: January 4th, 1995 (20 years old)

Position: Left winger

Nationality: Dutch

Current Club: Lazio

Height: 1.87 meters

International Caps: U-15 (5), U-16 (3), U-20 (1), U-21 (2)

Who is Ricardo Kishna?

Coming up through the youth ranks at ADO Den Haag before making the switch to Ajax as a 15-year old, Kishna’s success with the club’s under-19s granted him his first professional contract in January of last year, joining midfielder Riechedly Bazoer and defender Jairo Riedewald as the club’s latest academy graduates. Kishna hit the ground running as a senior player, scoring on his Eredivisie debut against AZ Alkmaar and contributing assists in both of his next two matches, as he and Ajax went on an unbeaten run all the way to the end of the season and clinching the league title for the team’s 33rd time. Despite only making five starts from his debut in February to the end of the season, his performances were enough for coach Frank de Boer to feature the youngster frequently throughout his first full professional campaign. Kishna made nearly 20 league starts in the 2014/15 edition of the Eredivisie, thrilling fans with his impeccable technical skills, speed, and eye for passes. Though he did not score frequently, he often found himself as a key link in Ajax’s attacking play, setting up 11 goals across all competitions. Though his numbers were not those of a world beater, Kishna filled in brilliantly for Viktor Fischer, whose injury in February of 2014 kept him from playing until March of this year. With the Dane returning to the starting lineup, it seemed inevitable that Kisha would be relegated to the bench, something that he understandly was not in agreement with. Visibly improving throughout his year-and-a-half with the senior Ajax side, his’s €4 million transfer fee neither justified the player’s potential nor his current talent, but was instead the product of an unfortunate situation within the Dutch giants’ squad.

Kishna’s experience on the international front has been fairly limited, as the 20-year-old has only made a handful of youth appearances to date. He made his first Netherlands under-21 start in March 2014, and has since played once more for the U-21 and once for the U-20 setup. However, if he continues his fine Ajax form with Lazio, then a senior Netherlands callup could be not so far away.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Kishna shares many strengths with the multitude of young wingers coming of age in recent years. A pacy dribbler, his technical skills are sound if not fantastic for a player of his age and position. What sets him apart from the likes of Florian Thauvin and Lucas Piazon is his ability to find a proper pass, which is usually uncharacteristic for his age. Distribution from the wing and accurate crosses are his strong suits, attributes usually thought to reserved for more experienced wingers. At a club like Lazio, where team play is prized and goals are distributed across many different players, Kishna’s skillful parceling of the ball will be a valued asset towards the club’s hopeful title run.

It isn’t all sunshine and buttercups for the 20-year-old, as due to his age and professional inexperience, gaps remain in the winger’s skill set. Despite his considerable stature, Kishna remains weak in the air, frequently falling prey to bulkier and more powerful opponents in aerial situations. Though this condition is nothing new for wingers, Kishna’s failure to utilize his height to his full advantage will be exploited by opposition defenders and hard hitting midfield enforcers like Nigel de Jong. Furthermore, he, like many of his positional compatriots, is affected by defensive weakness. Though not a glaring necessary for a player like Kishna, he will continue to be limited with what he can contribute to team play should he fail to address this deficiency.

2015/16 and Beyond

Coming into next season, Kishna will most likely be a squad player, making starts now and again but largely confined to the bench in favor of established left forward Antonio Candreva. He will be a suitable player for the Dutchman to learn from, as their playing styles are quite similar, though Kishna’s is naturally much less refined. Should one of the annual rumours linking Candreva abroad come true a year or two from now, Lazio’s new signing has the capability to step up and fill the gap left by the club’s talismanic winger. In any case, €4 million is not a high price to pay even if Kishna fails to live up to expectations, but given Ajax’s track record with acadmy products, the chances of Kishna flopping are miniscule, indicating that the biancocelesti have got themselves an attacking ace for years to come.

Why Juve Need To Look Beyond Draxler

Schalke’s Sporting Director made quite a splash today with the claim that the German side not only rejected Juventus’ bid for Draxler, but told them to refrain from contacting the youngster again.

Apparently, Juventus offered an amount nowhere near what the Germans were looking for. However, Juve are keen on continuing to negotiate for the World Cup winning 21 year old, but the bigger issue is, what is the Old Lady going to get out of him?

Draxler is undoubtedly one of the hottest prospects in Europe, and it’s not a secret. Playing for Schalke, one of Germany’s consistent Champions League sides, he has experience in Europe’s premier competition. It’s also worth noting that Draxler was part of the German team that won the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. A man of his pedigree is not easy to find.

The problem with Draxler is his history of injuries. Also, if Juve want to replace Vidal, they would need a more central player.

From an attacking perspective, Draxler is a natural winger. He’s left footed, and doesn’t have Vidal’s physicality, or even that of an alternative like Isco, who plays for Real Madrid.

Comparing Draxler to Isco is difficult. They are two players of high quality, but not made for the same position. In Isco’s favor is his speed and touch, which arguably for a 23 year old is among the best in Europe. His ability to get past players is phenomenal, and with one of the sweetest shots in Spain, his potential place in a trequartista (attacking midfielder) position at Juventus is clear.

Isco was a part of the 2013 U-21 Euro winning Spanish side that beat Italy in the final to lift the trophy. In that tournament the Real Madrid midfielder dominated the competition, standing head and shoulders above the rest. Even for an Italy that featured the then-famous “Pescara triad” of Verratti, Insigne and Immobile, nobody came close to the Spaniard.

Fast forward to 2015, Isco finds himself in and out of the Real Madrid starting lineup. Notwithstanding the tough competition for playing time, he still has been able to put up impressive numbers for Los Blancos.

In 106 games with Real Madrid, Isco has scored 17 goals and 23 assists. Not bad for a player who has faced competition from James Rodriguez and Gareth Bale for playing time. Regardless, if there is a player worth investing in who can bring tremendous proven quality, it’s Isco.

In the end, Juventus will have to decide whether they want to bring in a player who at the moment is superior with more room to grow, or Draxler, a player who will need to take his play up to the next level to really merit the famed trequartista role for Juventus.

Pirlo, Kaká Begin MLS Takeover

This past Sunday in New York, two former teammates and Serie A legends reunited as opponents in an MLS clash. Orlando City’s captain Kaká and NYCFC’s “Most Interesting Man” Andrea Pirlo put on a show in the Bronx in front of some 32,000 fans, giving birth to a new chapter in their footballing careers

On Sunday, July 26th, fans from across the New York area flocked to Yankee Stadium in the Bronx where a regular season Major League Soccer fixture was taking place. The “House That Ruth Built” was packed with some 32,000 fans to watch…..a soccer match. In a city full of proud baseball fans who know all too well about winning, it was “The Beautiful Game” that was causing all of the commotion.

Andrea Pirlo made his debut for New York City FC against his former teammate Kaká who stars for Orlando City SC in this battle between former Champions League winning teammates. Both of these stars had accomplished almost everything there is to in football, from Champions League glory to Ballon d’Or titles, with a few World Cup trophies mixed in. Now, they find themselves in North America where they look to dominate once again.

Prior to the arrival of Pirlo, the longtime Milan man Kaká had already cemented his place in MLS as an elite player, earning a starting spot on the MLS All-Star team set to take on Tottenham Hotspur later this month. Through fan voting, the 33-year old earned captain status for the match, a role he is very familiar with from his days donning the red and black kit of the Rossoneri. The Brazilian arrived to Orlando on June 30, 2014 as a “Designated Player,” before going out on loan to São Paolo for six months, but it hasn’t taken long for the ex-Real Madrid man to adapt to life in the U.S as he has bagged 9 goals in 20 league matches. Sure, he has lost a step or two, but his technical ability to outsmart the opposition wherever he may be deployed by manager Adrian Heath proves that he still has plenty to offer the fans of this expanding league.

In stepped one of football’s most elegant players in Andrea Pirlo. The beard, the dead ball magic, the ease of playing at an elite level through the age of 35 and so much more. A player who seems to have the pace of play in the palm of his hands, the 36-year old ageless wonder arrives to the Big Apple as an immediate favorite of the city he has always loved to visit. Last week, the former Bianconeri midfielder was showcased to the city at a press conference where media from across the globe gathered to get a glimpse of the World Cup winner’s introduction. After Frank Lampard agreed to join the club last summer and David Villa was made the club’s first ever player, NYCFC’s purchase of Andrea Pirlo makes it clear that they mean business and intend on creating something special in the “Capital of the World.”

In front of thousands of NYCFC supporters chanting his name, Pirlo was subbed into the match early in the second half to a roaring applause from the hometown fans and was greeted by Kaká as he graced the pitch. Every time the Italian received the ball, fans of all ages cheered on the newest big name to come to New York. Watching a player of Pirlo’s caliber in person is entirely different than observing him on television. It’s his maneuvering around the midfield and his every movement that sets up his approach to pick his pass. As a viewer from the stands and as cliche as it may sound, it was clear that his teammates felt his presence immediately. The buildup play improved and operating room on the pitch grew exponentially larger for New York City FC to attack Orlando, leading them to fend off Kaká’s side 5-3.

If you were lucky enough to grab a ticket to this match in New York to witness these two duke it out, you certainly got your money’s worth. Yes, Kaká and Pirlo (and Villa) stole the show on the sunny weekend clash, but that’s not the point here. Those guys are expected to have that sort of impact on the game regardless of where they play. What is truly remarkable is that those who play alongside these once-historic Serie A players are in as much of a shock as those viewing from the bleacher seats. Pirlo’s teammate Shay Facey expressed his feelings playing with the legend: “Playing with him is something I am going to talk about for a long, long time.”

Andrea Pirlo and Ricardo Kaká, not quite finished yet.

Napoli make an offer for Maksimovic

With the Astori deal dramatically falling apart, Napoli continues the search to find a defender that is right for Sarri. Despite Cairo’s statements, the Partenopei aren’t giving up on Maksimovic, the well-sought after Torino defender. According to Gianluca Di Marzio, Napoli has recently offered 12 million euros plus bonus. An offer that will probably have to be raised in order to find an agreement.

Andrea’s Day: Pirlo Sets the Bronx Ablaze

IFD senior editor Alex Mascitti was at Yankee Stadium on Sunday afternoon, the following is his eyewitness account of Andrea Pirlo’s debut in the Bronx, where his impact will be felt for quite some time.

After traveling almost one thousand miles at night to make it to the game, I found myself on the subway going through Brooklyn and Manhattan on the way to the historic and quite different borough of the Bronx. New York, which is steeped in its strong Italian heritage, is now the home of one of Italy’s most decorated and beloved players in the form of Andrea Pirlo. Before leaving Italy he had won the last 5 Scudetti, and left Europe nearly as a Champions League winner for the third time.

Yankee Stadium, as odd a venue as it is for soccer, is arguably one of the most well recognized sporting arenas in the world. It’s hallowed ground has Italian influence all around it. Players like Joe Di Maggio, Yogi Berra, Pepitone and many others have carved their names into the history books of America’s most fabled team. Today, it was Pirlo’s turn to make his claim for history.

11755211_10206424190016966_3717089189103721316_n

The buildup of excitement was clear well before kickoff. Yankee Stadium usually holds a capacity of around 24,000 spectators for soccer matches, only about half of the total available seats. Today, the stadium opened its third tier and was set to welcome around 32,000 people. All just for the chance at seeing ‘Il Maestro’ debut for his new club.

Prior to the match, there were whispers in the halls of the media center, “Will we see Pirlo today?”, “Is he ready today?”. This level of anticipation to see a player debut for a club has never been reached before in MLS, the vastly expanding top flight of American soccer.

As warmups were beginning a new face, or more noticeably, a new head of hair emerged from the dugout. His number, 21. The pedigree of an unmatched man was preparing to go into battle today. This game against Orlando City was by no means a friendly, this game is not a summer tour, or a farewell to soccer game. It was a game that could either propel NYCFC back into the playoff race, or send them adrift into the abyss in their inaugural season. Coach Jason Kreis was asked by an IFD correspondent last week about his plans for Pirlo and responded saying that “he will be a perfect fit” into the team’s tactical scheme: looking in retrospect now, Kreis’ prediction may have been an understatement.

The game against Orlando City kicked off at 2:45 in the afternoon, around the same time Americans would tune in to watch Pirlo play in Europe week in and week out for the better part of the last two decades. With the #21 on the bench, NYCFC fans started to chant “We want Pirlo!” all around the stadium.

The difference in quality was immediately apparent. Absolutely, MLS is not yet at the standard of its European counterparts, but in a tightly knit game, where the quality of player is lower, the addition of someone who has the talent of Pirlo is like the difference between the sun and the moon – unquestionable.

David Villa opened the scoring in the final minute of the first half, and NYCFC headed into the locker room with a full head of confidence in a game that could very well define their season, with their biggest weapon still on the bench. Coach Kreis earlier this week confirmed Pirlo to be “day-by-day”, even with the 1-0 lead there was still no guarantee of seeing the new signing, but the fans made it perfectly clear who they wanted to see. “Bring on Pirlo! We want Pirlo!” rang out from the stands of the stadium. And when Pirlo began to warm up early in the second half, the fans and journalists alike began to get really excited.

In the 57th minute, Il Maestro stepped next to the fourth official, and the change was made. Andrea Pirlo stepped onto the the field for the first time in America, and the crowd went into an uproar. Pirlo had set the Bronx ablaze, like many of the Italians before him in a different sport, on the same piece of land.

As an Italian-American myself, I felt a great sense of pride, excitement, and joy to see a player I had looked up to for so long finally playing in the United States, in front of 32,000 people who felt the same way.

Pirlo’s presence made an immediate impact. Like he did for Juventus for four dominant years, he switched play, created opportunities, set up attacks, and stunned the Orlando City SC defense. The fans who paid to be there would agree that Pirlo was worth the price of admission.

Andrea’s side, NYCFC, won the match in a thrilling 5-3 game. Where David Villa scored a double, the Captain had sent the fans into the stars with one of the best performances in the club’s young history. The team headed into the locker room victorious and right back into the playoff hunt with a crucial game against Montreal coming up in the Bronx next Saturday.

4DJAyacTAfter the match, the media had descended into a “Pirlo-frenzy”. In the locker-room there was music playing, players celebrating and Pirlo, who is known not to like an excessive amount of attention, heading over to his locker to talk on the phone. Cool, calm, collected, like he had already settled well into the team.

Center back Shay Facey told me, “Playing with him is something I am going to talk about for a long, long time… He’s a legend”. Another teammate and goal scorer Tommy McNamara said, “In training, there’s just some things he does that makes you say, whoa, okay, this guy is good.”

The general atmosphere in the locker room at NYCFC is that this may be a new team, with a whole new environment to adapt to, but there’s a lot to be excited for. Players like Villa, Pirlo, Lampard and Iraola bring a wealth of experience that no other MLS team can remotely offer. If the rest of the MLS can follow this route that NYCFC is beginning to pave, we as American soccer fans have a lot to look forward to and a lot to be optimistic about in terms of the league.

And while he did not score, or rack up an official assist, today was without a shadow of a doubt Andrea’s day.

Crespo and Modena: Why the Milan clubs should pay attention

As managerial appointments go it was far from being the most prestigious, yet it made headlines nonetheless, mainly down to the reputation of the man involved rather than the club he had chosen to begin his journey.

On June 30th just gone Hernan Crespo, one of the best strikers of his generation, was appointed manager of Serie B club Modena. It is Crespo’s first step into first team management, after being in charge of Parma’s Primavera side last season, and a perfect one at that. The Argentinian goal machine has signed a one year deal with the Emilian club with the option for two more.

While from Crespo’s point of view it is the perfect starting point, for Modena however it is the ultimate gamble, appointing a manager with no experience at this level. However it is a gamble that the Gialloblu had to make.

The morale at the club has been hit hard in recent years, due to the promotions of both Sassuolo and Carpi to Serie A. Modena have always been seen as the traditional powerhouse of their province and now not only are they not the best they’ve even slipped to third an unthinkable situation for this historic club.

If all that wasn’t bad enough Modena have been pretty awful on the pitch as well, only just retaining there Serie B status for this season thanks to a relegation play-off win over Virtus Entella. The hope is that Crespo will be able to turn around the club’s fortunes and while the world of football will not pay much attention to his exploits two Serie A clubs in particular should keep one eye trained in closely on events in Emilia-Romagna.

Those two clubs are Inter and Ac Milan and the answer to why they should watch Crespo’s journey unfold lies right at the feet of a certain Antonio Conte. Over the last number of seasons the two Milanese clubs in a desperate attempt to keep pace with the Conte built Juve juggernaut, have tried to mirror the clubs approach by appointing young inexperienced in house managers in the hope that it will give the clubs the bounce that the Bianconeri got on Conte’s appointment.

Not surprisingly each of these young managers have crashed and burned, Andrea Stramaccioni (Inter) Clarence Seedorf and Pippo Inzaghi (Milan). As it turned out being a club legend or part of the fabric of the club in Stramaccioni’s case, was not enough to make up for a complete lack of experience.

Maybe Conte was just a freak of nature a manager able to come from nowhere and rebuild the club where he had made his name. Yet what many people forget about Conte is that he was by no means a novice when he was handed the Juve job. In fact the Vecchia Signoria were his fifth job in management having already taken charge of Arezzo, Bari, Atalanta and Siena.

While his spells at Arezzo and Atalanta would end sourly, he tasted success in his other two posts guiding Bari and Siena to promotion from Serie B. It was this hard graft at the lower levels that those in charge of Inter and Milan missed, they just thought that a great player from Juve’s past, who knew the club inside and out had stepped in to lead the club forward and if they simple copied that method the same would happen for them. Not so as it so evidently turned out.

This is where Crespo makes his appearance. At the start of last season Crespo was given his first managerial position in charge of the Parma Primavera side. Everyone knows the fate that befell the Crociati, but what few people know is that while the club was going to rack and ruin around him the Argentine guided his young charges to sixth in the table.

It was truly a commendable job by Crespo especially when come the end of the Parma debacle, stories emerged that his young players had to have cold showers after matches because there was no warm water and were getting sick as a result. This along with the fact that other clubs paid the bus fare to get the Parma team to matches only enhances the job he did.

If Parma didn’t go bankrupt this post season there is a strong possibility that Crespo could have been staring into his first job in Serie A. It doesn’t take a genius to figure out that Crespo was being groomed by the club to eventually take over from Roberto Donadoni only for future events to put pay to that.

This has been very much to Modena’s favour as they have now snapped up a talented young manager. As for the Milan clubs it gives them the perfect chance to watch Crespo from afar and study his potential to succeed at the top one day.

Also let’s not forget that Crespo played for both Milan clubs with some distinction (116 games with Inter 45 goals and 40 games with Milan 17 goals) and still has plenty of goodwill with both sides of the San Siro divide.

So while Inter and Milan have one eye on returning to the Champions League, if they really want a young talented club legend as there manager in the future a la in the Antonio Conte mould they can do worse things than to keep their other eye on events unfolding in one corner of Serie B.

Player Focus: Raffaele Di Gennaro

In recent years, Italy has found itself with an uncharacteristic abundance of talented young goalkeepers, all vying for the chance to take over Gianluigi Buffon’s mantle when the legendary shot stopper hangs up his gloves. Raffaele Di Gennaro, though rarely mentioned alongside the likes of Mattia Perin and Nicola Leali, could soon stake his own claim as a contender for the coveted spot between the sticks.

What you need to know

Full name: Raffaele Di Gennaro

Date of Birth: Oct. 3, 1993 (21 years old)

Position: Goalkeeper

Nationality: Italian

Current club: Latina Calcio (on loan from Inter Milan)

Height: 1.85 meters

International Caps: U-16 (1), U-20 (3)

Who is Raffaele Di Gennaro?

Brought up in Inter Milan’s academy, Di Gennaro started grabbing the spotlight early in his career, winning the NextGen Series (a European youth tournament) with the Nerazzurri in 2012. Rising through the team’s ranks, the San Marino native captured the attention of his club’s youth coaches with his adeptness at keeping clean sheets and quick reflexes. Several successful seasons with Inter’s primavera sides eventually led to the decision to send Di Gennaro out on loan, in order to hone his skills against professional opposition rather than youth players. In the summer of 2013, the then 19-year-old relocated roughly 250 kilometers east to Serie B’s Cittadella. Immediately thrust into the starting lineup at his temporary club, Di Gennaro’s heroics established him as a major Italian goalkeeping prospect. Keeping 12 clean sheets in his debut pro season, including one on his loan (and senior) debut, Di Gennaro had a major hand in keeping the struggling team afloat and away from the relegation spots. Despite conceding nearly 50 times, the Inter-owned player was heralded as a hero by Cittadella and it’s supporters, making very few mistakes and rising to the occasion when called upon.

Though largely successful with his loan club, Inter nonetheless sent Di Gennaro on another loan to Serie B for the 2014-15 season, this time to Latina Calcio, which in 2013/14 nearly achieved Serie A promotion, finishing 3rd and losing out to Cesena in the promotion playoff final. Relegated to the bench for the majority of his first two months with Latina, a series of poor performances from starting keeper Simone Farelli led coach Roberto Breda to promote his young loanee to the starting spot, where he remained for the duration of the season. His second consecutive campaign with 10+ cleans sheets, Di Gennaro managed to shut out his opposition 11 times, conceding just 23 goals in the 28 matches he took part in. Orchestrating a remarkable comeback, his inspired performances brought the club from 21st at the moment of his takeover, to a respectable 14th place finish. While Latina lost six times in the club’s first 15 matches, only eight losses were suffered during Di Gennaro’s reign for the subsequent 27.

He made his Italy under-20 debut in a 3-3 draw with Switzerland in September of 2013, kickstarting a to date fairly unremarkable international career. Two further U20 are the extent the goalkeeper’s time with the Azzurrini, and his last appearance came in the beginning of 2014. This limited career can be attributed to the abundance of young Italian shot stoppers, with players like Marco Sportiello, Nicola Leali, and Francesco Bardi all seemingly ahead of Di Gennaro in the goalkeeping hierarchy.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Despite his age, Di Gennaro already looks extremely well rounded, displaying few poor traits and improving on his primary ones season after season. Highly adept at making key saves, the 21-year-old has not let his shorter-than-average (for a keeper) height limit his aerial ability and command of the penalty box. Able to use his feets as well as his hands highly effectively, Di Gennaro’s time with small Serie B teams like Cittadella and Latina has served as a godsend, as the constant barrages of attacks created plenty of opportunity for learning experiences. Despite these positives, Di Gennaro’s youth and relative professional inexperience still make appearances as lapses in concentration, and he has been somewhat fortunate to concede only one own goal the past two seasons. Fortunately, this isn’t a flaw that will not remedy itself with time, and as the Inter man continues to grow as a player, so too will his focus and reading of the game improve.

2015-16 and Beyond

Should Di Gennaro continue on his present course, big things look to be in store for the San Marino-born shot stopper. With his loan at Latina extended for another season, Di Gennaro will enjoy another season as a near-guaranteed starter, and will undoubtedly continue his ascent into a Serie A career. If Inter end up selling much-wanted goalkeeper Samir Handanovic, the Nerazzurri will have themselves a very capable replacement already on the books, ready to break into his youth club’s senior ranks and establish himself as a serious contender for a future Azzurri spot.

It’s Now Or Never For Lorenzo Insigne

After having his last few seasons derailed by inconsistency and injury problems, Lorenzo Insigne must find the promise that led many to proclaim his as the future of the national team, next season or risk falling off the map completely.

When a 20-year-old Lorenzo Insigne led Pescara to promotion alongside Ciro Immobile and Marco Verratti, the hype surrounding the trio kicked into overdrive. Azzurri fans believed that the three young Italians would soon form the backbone of their national team but unfortunately, this would not be the case. Of the three players, only Marco Verratti has lived up to his potential plying his trade for Ligue Un giants, Paris Saint-Germain. Ciro Immobile did have a good season with Torino but then failed to replicate his goal-scoring form at Borussia Dortmund. The German outfit quickly sold him to Sevilla the following season at a fraction of the price they paid for. Lorenzo Insigne, on the other hand, has spent all his career at Napoli but hasn’t really established himself. So far, the player’s been managed by Walter Mazzari, Rafa Benitez and will now play under the guidance of Maurizio Sarri. Under the former Empoli boss, Insigne must find his game or he will risk joining the likes of Raffaele Palladino and Paolo De Ceglie in the pile of players that never quite delivered on their promise. The former Pescara man is no longer the exciting, unknown twenty-year-old from Pescara and it is for this reason that I say that next season is do or die for him.

Player Details:

Name: Lorenzo Insigne

Club: Napoli
Position: Attacking midfielder

Age: 24

Nationality: Italy

Height: 163 cm

Weight: 59 kg
Insigne’s short career has been a peculiar yet predictable one. After a few impressive performances, the Neapolitan born forward fails to back it up. Due to the inconsistency that has plagued his career, the 24-year-old is yet to become a mainstay with the national team. In his first three seasons with the club, Insigne has scored fourteen goals and registered twenty-four assists in 118, yes, 118 games in all competitions. For a player of his type, his strike-rate is truly appalling. Next season, he will definitely have to find his scoring touch or any sort of touch for that matter. That said, there is some good news. He will be coached by Maurizio Sarri. While it may not sound like much, the Napoli boss is very good with younger players. A lot of his success with them can be attributed to the fact that he is simply obsessed with details. If you don’t believe me, look no further than the drone he has flying over the players at practice in order to pick up on their tendencies. If the drone doesn’t convince you, take a brief look at his tenure with Empoli.
When Empoli gained promotion to Serie A, many expected them to go straight down. Sarri, however, had other ideas and got the most out of almost every player at his disposal. Among those players were various youngsters such as Luigi Sepe, Daniele Rugani and Riccardo Saponara. Under Sarri’s leadership, the players developed into crucial players and attracted interest from Serie A’s top dogs. Rugani joined Juventus, while Sepe and Saponara have been linked with moves to Fiorentina and Napoli, respectively. Given Sarri’s success with younger players and minimal resources, there is no reason that he will not have similar success with Insigne at a much bigger club like Napoli. With the partenopei, he will be coaching Gonzalo Higuain, Manolo Gabbiadini and Marek Hamsik among others. Due to the talent that he will have, I do believe that he will bring out the best of Insigne. Despite two managers failing to do so before him, Sarri has a completely different approach. In a recent press conference, the newly-appointed Napoli boss said that he plans on using him as a trequartista. (#10, behind the strikers) In the past, Insigne has largely played at left midfield where he failed to make his mark. Next season, he will likely be deployed higher up the pitch and for the first time in a while, centrally. This can only bode well for the 24-year-old player moving forward.
By the next European championships, Insigne will be twenty-five years old. He won’t exactly be a talent anymore. If Insigne has aspirations to play for the national team on a regular basis, he will have to take the next step in his career sooner rather than later. The talent is certainly there to accomplish this but it won’t be easy. At least at Napoli, for the first time, he is surrounded by players who are in the same boat as him. Both Jorginho and Manolo Gabbiadini have shown immense promise over the course of their careers but have yet to develop into the players that many projected them to be. While Gabbiadini is very close at achieving this, he is yet another Italian player on the verge of explosion. Earlier in his Napoli career, Insigne has been surrounded with more established players. This can be a blessing and a curse at the same time. Sure, it’s always nice to play with very good players but if you can’t compete at their level regularly, you are simply left in the dust. To be fair to Insigne, it’s quite difficult for a player in his early twenties to play at the same level of players like Edinson Cavani, Ezequiel Lavezzi and Marek Hamsik. Due to the blend of experienced players and talents, Insigne is in a great position to do well next season.
The fact that he will be surrounded with players like him is an underrated aspect. During his loan spell with Pescara, which is widely regarded to be the time where he played his best football, he was playing with players exactly like him. Many of Pescara’s players were young and upcoming talents looking to make a name for themselves. As a result of this, he did not feel the pressure to perform and it showed. At Napoli, however, it is evident that the 24-year-old crumbled under the expectations of a big club. Often times, he is hesitant to try things that he would otherwise normally do. Another team in which Insigne flourished is with the U-21 national team. Once again, this comes as no surprise. That team is literally composed of similar players in and around the same age as each other. Due to this, Insigne can fully express his talent without any problems. At least with Gabbiadini and Jorginho next season, there are players like him to a certain extent.
The importance of next season cannot be understated for Lorenzo Insigne. He’s not so young anymore and Antonio Conte’s Italy are in dire need of some creativity in the attacking third. Should he display the promise from earlier in his career, he should be flying to France with the national team. That said, it won’t be as easy as it sounds. Quite frankly, he hasn’t be any good recently. While long-term injuries have definitely stunted his growth, there is no denying that Insigne is quite overrated. He’s an interesting player, who on his day can change a game. The only issue is that it hasn’t been his day that often. Luckily next year, Insigne will be managed by Sarri, a manager who gets the best out of similar players to him. Moreover, the pressure of performing well will be reduced because now, he is not only aware about the everyday difficulties of performing at a big club but will try to overcome them with players like him. If he fails next season, his demise will be complete and it will be a quite sad one at that because of just how good he can be under the right circumstances. Now with the circumstances in his favor, it’s up to Insigne to perform. No pressure, Lorenzo!
