On the anniversary of Antonio Conte’s unexpected departure, Juventus fans were met with (some more) disconcerting news: Arturo Vidal, Juventus’ warrior-like midfielder, was to leave imminently to Bayern Munich according to many reputable transfer sources.
With a pretty price tag that should near €40 million (including performance-based bonuses), Vidal’s sale is to say the least controversial among Juventus fans. The following are some considerations as to why the bianconeri should, or should not part ways with the Chilean midfielder.
Juventus should sell Vidal now because:
– Juventus need to get players who are hungry for victories. The argument is not about age, for at 28 Vidal is hardly showing signs of ageing. It’s about motivaton. Vidal had a trying season under Allegri for reasons that go beyond his post knee operation period. After four years of victories at Juventus Vidal may have grown tired and lacks the motivation to do it all over again.
– Putting aside individual considerations, Juventus needs to bring about transition in its roster or witness the decadence that followed at Inter, post triplete.
– Market demand is strong but waning. Simply put, Vidal can fetch a pretty penny, for now. As he nears the end of his contract and “the big 3-0″ his value is destined to decrease. This summer is a key crossroads for the Chilean: either double-down (and stay with Juventus for the long haul) or walk away.
– Vidal is not indispensable. Juventus have a plethora of talented midfielders despite losing Pirlo. Juventus brass are calculating, and have to weigh Allegri’s tactical considerations: the Tuscan has made his need for a trequartista (attacking midfielder) clear. Juventus are able to compete to achieve their season objectives without Vidal.
– The balance sheet: Vidal as a liability. Accountung maxims state that for each asset there is a corresponding liability. Vidal’s value on the field has been countered by a knee injury that has kept the Chilean from performing atop his game, as well as off-the-field shenanigans. Notably, his wild night a few days before Juventus-Roma last October or the one impressed in most recent memory: a an impaired driving charge in which he put at risk his own life, and his wife’s.
Juventus should not sell Vidal now because:
– Too much change, too fast. Juventus has seen the departure of natural leaders such as Storari, Pepe, Tevez and Pirlo. Vidal’s departure may affect the Juventus change room beyond repair. The fine balance in the group dynamic may start to shift, with only the likes of Buffon, Bonucci and Chiellini left to lead the charge.
– Beyond the “soft” aspect of group dynamics, the loss of Vidal may upset the tactical balance and dynamics. This unbalance would be exacerbated by the addition of an eventual trequartista.
– Vidal’s value may not have necessarily peaked. The value of a player doesn’t necessarily go down at 28. Vidal’s value may very well hold this year and could be sold at the same or an even higher price next season.
Juventus has been well served by Vidal but barring an unlikely coup de théâtre it looks like the Chilean has played his last season at Juventus.
Confirmation of today’s news will be witnessed in the coming days and will culminate by July 20, when the midfielder is expected to join his teammates at Juve’s preseason camp.
