JuvEvolution: The Impact of Losing Vidal

Let’s face it, for four seasons, Arturo Vidal has been a main cog in the Juventus dynasty that has seen the club lift 7 trophies.

Now, Arturo Vidal, after winning the Copa America for his native Chile seems set to seek pastures (somewhat) anew in Germany with Bayern Munich. The Bavarians recently sold their long time warrior Bastian Schweinsteiger before immediately turning their attention to the Juventus talisman. Perhaps more than a mere coincidence, Vidal and Schweinsteiger has very similar qualities, the best word to describe both players is king.

Arturo Vidal is a unique player, phenomenal passing ability, world class tackler, grinta, and even a touch of class with his shot. In addition, it’s difficult to find a player who can fill in a back 3 and play as an attacking midfielder in one season. Vidal can do it all, at 28 years old and four Scudetti later, it’s most likely the right time to move from Turin to keep the hunger alive.

Stepping back for a second, critics question his attitude, his mindset. But what’s important to remember is Vidal came from poverty and had to face adversity every step of the way while trying to make it to Europe.

In an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport back in March, he compared himself to Carlos Tevez, “Like Carlos [Tevez], I had a tough start in life, but this only makes us play better…When I was 13 years old we had nothing to eat, so my mother would work a whole day just to give us food for that evening. I knew my talent at football could get us all back on our feet”.

“The day of my marriage and when my children were born are the best days of my life. When things go well, you have to give back to your family and do all you can for them going forward.

“In Chile we all learned to play football among the rocks, but that helped us to develop. I used to fall on them all the time and I’ll remember that for the rest of my life.”

Forged from a difficult childhood, he became known as “El Gurriero” or “The Warrior” for his style of play, mainly his never give up attitude or hard tackles, or near net ripping goals.

This current Juventus that won 4 Scudetti and made it to the Champions League finale also came from nothing. Vidal went from being a relative unknown to a household name in 4 years time. The Bianconeri and the Chilean grew together over the course of time, perhaps the biggest loss to Juve’s roster won’t be Vidal’s name on the teamsheet,  but his presence in the locker room and the honor he brought to the Juventus jersey.
