The Toronto FC forward has been sensational since making the jump across the Atlantic and here’s why Antonio Conte should have the Atomic Ant penciled into his squad sheet for next season
Sebastian Giovinco left Juventus for many reasons, but above all them was playing time – he simply was not getting enough time on the pitch.
The heckling from the fans and the crushing pressure from the media certainly did not help the situation, even for ‘Seba’ who was a Turin native. After setting the world alive for Parma, his results were less than impressive for Juventus.
Even for Italy, but specifically in non-Serie A play, Giovinco greatly struggled to find the back of the net. In 21 appearances for the Azzurri, and an even more shuddering record in European play, scoring only two goals in 28 appearances between the Champions League in Europa League.
It was definitely time for a change, and instead of staying in Europe, Sebastian took a landmark move to the MLS, at the age of 27.
Giovinco ended his season with Juventus in January in order to prepare for a full campaign with Toronto FC. It took only 18 games to eclipse the total amount of goals Giovinco scored with Juventus in 89 games. His confidence is sky high and this comes at a time where there is no true star Italian striker, the ones who moved abroad, like Mario Balotelli and Ciro Immobile have since fallen off the radar as top European strikers. Alessio Cerci failed to make a big impact at both Aletico Madrid and AC Milan, so that leaves Conte with options like Graziano Pelle or Simone Zaza, both who have not been able to find the back of the net on a consistent basis.
In addition, players like Franco Vazquez and Eder have been included in Italy’s plans, but neither are at a quality high enough to make Italy solid contenders. Alessandro Matri featured in Gli Azzurri’s latest addition against Croatia and Portugal, but Italy’s lone goal of the two games was scored by Candreva, not a forward.
Italy faces now a very difficult time, no pure strikers in form, Andrea Pirlo preparing to live the swansong days of his career at the newly formed NYCFC, south of the Canadian border. Meaning Italy’s longtime playmaker and more importantly, set piece specialist will be a doubt for the upcoming Azzurri campaign.
One thing Giovinco demonstrated at Juventus was his ability to perform excellent set pieces, many fans felt that Giovinco could actually usurp Pirlo’s role at free kicks without a problem. Therefore, in his absence, the Azzurri do have a very good alternative to the Maestro.
A major factor to consider when taking into account Giovinco’s performances is the level of play in MLS, it is unquestionably lower than Serie A or any other top European league, but the point remains that his form is far superior to any other option at the moment. Which begs the following question; Would you rather pick an in form player in a lower league, or a player in a top league who is not performing at all?
