With match-day fourteen of Serie A action behind us, some players are beginning to emerge as crucial parts to their team while others are declining. Who’s trending up and who’s trending down?
This piece will look at the form of players from week eleven to week fourteen as we have previously covered week eight to eleven in this piece. Without further ado, here’s who’s been on form in recent weeks.
Serie A Stock Watch: Weeks 11-14
Stock Up –
Paulo Dybala, Juventus, striker: The forty million dollar man has started to put in performances worthy of his price tag. While he showed glimpses of talent earlier in the season, the former Palermo man is beginning to make this team his own. In the last three games, Dybala has scored winners against Empoli and Milan and provided a crucial assist against his former team to Mario Mandzukic with a pin-point cross. As of right now, the 22-year-old has been involved in 45% (9/20) of Juve’s goals with six goals and three assists. With the eyes of an entire fanbase on him, it’s safe to sat that Dybala is currently delivering the goods.
Jorginho, Napoli, midfielder: The Italo-Brazilian is finally starting to be the player Napoli hoped he’d be and has put in some top class performances against Udinese, Hellas Verona, and most recently Inter. In his last two games, Jorginho has completed over a hundred passes (182 and 106) tilting the midfield battle in Napoli’s favour in both affairs. Moreover, he was able to register an assist on the only goal of the game against Udinese. Like Masina, many want Jorginho to be called up to the national team and choose to represent Italy over his native country, Brazil. Whether he is on Antonio Conte’s radar at the moment is unknown, but one thing’s certain: It won’t be long before he’s donning the Azzurri jersey with performances like these.
Adam Masina, Bologna, leftback: The 21-year-old is enjoying his football at the moment under Roberto Donadoni and has helped Bologna claim four points from their last three games. In his last three games against Hellas Verona, Roma, and Torino, Masina has picked up a goal, an assist and put in a man of the match performance against the giallorossi. With the player in flying form, many are starting to call for him to choose to represent Italy over his native Morocco at international level.
Stock Down –
Felipe Anderson, Lazio, winger: After a decent start to the season, the Lazio winger has struggled in recent times to make an impact on games. In his side’s last three games Roma, Lazio, and Palermo, the player’s most notable contribution was a crossbar and a yellow card against the giallorossi. His poor run of form has forced Stefano Pioli to come up with alternatives to him. Most recently, he came off the bench against Empoli for the last thirty minutes but couldn’t help his side find an equalizer. Against Palermo, on the other hand, the Brazilian was subbed off on the hour mark after struggling to break down the rosanero’s resolute defence. For a player with his talent, his current performances leave a lot to be desired and are one of the reasons currently find themselves in tenth place.
Wojciech Szczesny, Roma, goalkeeper: The former Arsenal man has failed to continue his early season form recently and was even dropped in his side’s last game against Atalanta as he was reportedly caught smoking. In addition, I’m sure his comments after his side’s 6-1 defeat to Barcelona didn’t do him any favours as the Polish shot-stopper said that playing against the Spanish champions and losing 6-1 was, “beautiful to watch.” Considering Morgan De Sanctis’ age and declining talent, Szczesny should, in theory, reclaim the number one spot by the end of the season. That said, he will have to be better than he has been in the last few weeks as Roma will find it increasingly difficult to string results together with an underperforming keeper.
Luis Muriel, Sampdoria, striker: The Colombian forward began the season in very good form scoring four goals and notching a further two assists. That said, his last three games have been rather poor by his standards. Against Fiorentina, Udinese, and Milan, three games in which Sampdoria lost, Muriel has failed to do anything of note and was left off the scoresheet on all three occasions. With his side struggling, Muriel along with Eder are now needed more than ever or they may be dragged into an unlikely relegation fight. At the moment, they are only three points above Bologna who occupy the last relegation spot.
