Serie B Week 29 Round-up

Maybe the league was just not exciting enough for them, maybe the idea of pulling away at the top just did not appeal to their sense of adventure. Whatever the case may be Cagliari have done their level best to keep it interesting to say the least.

The Rossoblu looked to have found their groove before this weekend’s action but a defeat on Friday night has been quickly followed up with another at home to Novara on Monday. Reduced to ten men before the half hour mark the Sardinians were then undone not long after by a Pablo Gonzalez strike. A lovely ball in over the top was raced onto by the forward who then taking only one touch drilled it home past Marco Storari.

The goal was enough to hand Cagliari their first home defeat of the campaign and give those chasing behind renewed hope.

In fact, Crotone went into their match on Tuesday night away to Livorno knowing that a win would see them climb over Cagliari and back to the summit. Unfortunately, it was an objective that the Squali were unable to achieve despite Andrea Luci being sent off for the Amaranto on 17 minutes.

From there on out the Calabrian’s would have the better of the chances but ran up against Carlo Pinsoglio in the Livorno net, with the former Modena keeper pulling off a number of good saves to earn his side a point. 0-0 it finishes at the Armando Picchi.

The mid-week round also proved less than stellar for the league’s third placed side Pescara as they went down 2-1 at home against Trapani. Nicola Citro opened the scoring for Serse Cosmi’s men on 14 minutes tapping home from a few yards out. Although there was a deal of suspicion around the goal as replays suggest the ball may have drifted out over the end line in the build-up.

Nevertheless, the goal stood and the Delfini were forced to find a way back into the match. Something they eventually did in the 89th minute, Michele Fornasier the man who looked to have given his team a draw when he swung his right leg at the ball after a corner from the right and managed to direct it home.

But no sooner were the crowd at the Adriatico dancing in celebration then they were stunned to silence. With the clock ticking into the third minute of stoppage time Mirko Eramo timed his run to perfection and getting on the end of the through ball slide it past Vincenzo Fiorillo to give Trapani a 2-1 win.

At the weekend only one of the top six sides managed a win, this mid-week that number rose to a paltry two. One of those two was not Cesena as they drew 1-1 away to Spezia. Antonio Ragusa gave the visitors the lead in this one on 35 minutes as he finished neatly at the keepers near post.

It looked as if that goal would be good enough for the win but 20 minutes from time former Cagliari hitman Nene scored with a bullet header after a cross from the right to earn a point for the Aquilotti.

It was not just a night of great action at the top of the table but also at the bottom as the struggling clubs gave us enough drama for at least two Shakespearean tragedies. First bottom side Como played host to third from bottom Virtus Lanciano. It was you believed a must win for Como if they were to have some chance of a miracle escape.

Sadly, it would not prove to be as the same old familiar failings came back to haunted them, specifically there staggering inability to hold onto a lead. There stand out player of the season so far Simone Ganz gave them the lead from the spot on 33 minutes with his 12th of the campaign. A well taken penalty it was putting it top right with the keeper going the wrong way.

As already mentioned though the Lariani have an allergic reaction to leading and so with 70 minutes on the clock Lanciano got back level. Armin Bacinovic with a beauty from distance giving Simone Scuffet no chance in the goal. 1-1 was how it finished.

Ascoli ended up beating Modena in the proverbial six-pointer but they did it the hard way. Davide Luppi gave the Gialloblu the lead on 23 minutes nicking the ball off his man in the box before proceeding to score.

However, things promptly went pear-shaped for Hernan Crespo’s men, as Simone Gozzi was given a straight red for a foul in the box. The clinical Daniele Cacia then stood up and converted the penalty with ease.

With their backs to the wall the Gialloblu were only able to hold out until the hour mark when Cacia made them pay again with a lovely curling effort from 12 yards out to give Ascoli the win.

Another side who seemed set for a big three points were second bottom Salernitana who were playing host to high flying Virtus Entella. Entella actually took the lead in this one, some rather shabby defending from the Granata defence eventually allowed Michele Troiano to power home on 20 minutes.

Nine minutes later though Salernitana were back on level terms, Riccardo Colombo putting home at the back post after a flick on from a corner. The Granata then took the lead two minutes into the second half Sergio Bus with an excellent run and even better finish into the bottom right corner.

It all looked to be going great for the hosts, especially when Entella were reduced to ten men. But then disaster struck as two minutes into stoppage time Simone Iacoponi broke their hearts when he headed home a free kick from the left.

Elsewhere around the league on Tuesday night Bari got back to winning ways with a crushing 4-0 win over Ternana, George Puscas with two goals in that one for the Galletti. Antonio Caracciolo’s 36 minute effort was enough to hand Brescia the win over Avellino. While a Matteo Ardemangi double gave the Grifone of Perugia a comfortable 2-0 win over Latina.

Finally, in another match down the bottom Pro Vercelli came from behind at the Romeo Menti to draw 1-1 with Vicenza, Ebagua seeing a penalty stopped by Mirko Pigliacelli which would have given the Biancorossi the win.

Verona, Toni: ”As Long As There Is A Chance, We Will Believe”

The ageless wonder, Luca Toni, believes there is still a possibility that Hellas Verona avoid relegation this to Serie B this season.

Luca Toni recently became the recipient of the Cangrande d’Oro which he was awarded by the City of Verona for his performances over the course of 2015 in the Hellas Verona jersey, and took the time to speak to the media afterwards:

On the 2-0 loss against Udinese:

We have analyzed our errors and now we are only thinking about beating Sampdoria. What is important that everyone in the locker room knows, is that until there is still a chance, we will believe. Anything can happen in football and however things go, we must pick up as many points as possible.

On his future:

I am not thinking about it at the moment. I am solely focused on Verona’s survival.

Pirlo the American, “I could stay in New York”

Pirlo hints to life in America after retirement.

Andrea Pirlo has perfectly integrated into American life. The ex-Milan and Juventus player, currently at NYCFC, spoke to The New York Times about his like if the Big Apple: “I always wanted to come play here, I didn’t think it would be so soon, and now I’m not opposed to staying here, it could be interesting.”

Pirlo’s life in New York is good, and it’s not just because of his 2.3 million dollar a year salary, and not because the MLS is constantly growing, it’s the calm walks through Manhattan, visiting the Guggenheim museum, also he can calmly have a meal at the Felidia restaurant, owned by his partner Valentina Baldini.

It’s everything, and that is what he said to The New York Times, “Just being able to go out to the trendiest restaurants, in Italy I can’t do that.” He then compared it to how it was like when he played Juventus, “‘‘There were times we were kept in our dressing room until late at night because it wasn’t safe to go home,’’ he says. ‘‘Our bus would get attacked, the tires slit.’’

He still has ties to Italy, in fact he continues to order his clothes directly from Italy; but he has started learning English and watching American Football, which he has been following since his arrival in the US. He has said that once he has gained mastery of the English language, he has one goal, to see a Broadway show.

Fiorentina, Sousa: “Having two less rest days than Roma penalizes us”

Fiorentina bench boss Paulo Sousa was pleased with his team’s performance in a 1-1 draw with Napoli.

Fiorentina are now tied with Roma for third.

Here are the main points discussed by Sousa:

“Tonight we did not have that bit of luck required to bring home a winning result which, I believe, is beyond merit. We’ve always believed we can finish in third and we certainly won’t stop to fight for this objective. I am proud of the great will demonstrated by the lads. Since the start of the season we’ve been competing against clubs built to win the scudetto.”

“I complimented everyone, we had a positive approach and we made things difficult for a quality side. The lads have a big heart. After the break we made too many errors. Napoli is a well organized side and they gained confidence as time passed. Slowly slowly we turned things around and found the right equilibrium till the end of the match. ”

Fiorentina will face Roma next on Friday, having two days less rest than their opponent.

“We have raised our expectations with respect to the start of the season.  It’s an important time of the season, the lads have maintained the quality of their play and I am proud of them. Having two less rest days than Roma penalizes us, that is a fact. I remain optimistic, we are always working on recovering our energy. I am certain we will play a great game, hopefully this time we will be able to win against a club built to win the scudetto.”

Serie A Team of the Week: Matchday 27

Here is Italian Football Daily’s Team of the Week for Matchday 27:

Goalkeeper:

Gianluigi Donnarumma (AC Milan): The young goalkeeper was again key in securing Milan a clean sheet and the Rossoneri have now gone eleven games without defeat.

Defenders:

Luca Antonelli (AC Milan): The Milan defence has looked very solid in recent weeks and Luca Antonelli at left-back has been very reliable. The 29-year-old scored Milan’s only goal as he turned in a scrappy goal from a corner.  In the process, Milan scored for the ninth game in a row; the longest current run in Serie A.

Francesco Acerbi (Sassuolo): The Italian centre-back continues to perform for Sassuolo and could be an outside contender for Antonio Conte’s squad for the Euros. His performance against Lazio was commanding as he put his body on the line to ensure the neroverdi got their 6th clean sheet of the season.

Leonardo Bonucci (Juventus): He scored against his former club to give Juve the lead and was a beast at the back as Mauro Icardi struggled to have an impact on the Derby d’Italia.

Antonio Rüdiger (AS Roma): The German defender has formed a strong partnership with Kostas Manolas and in the Greek’s absence he stepped up with a commanding performance against Empoli.

Midfielders:

Miralem Pjanić (AS Roma): After his free-kick was blocked by the wall, the Bosnian playmaker hit a shot that went through on its second attempt to give Roma a second lead. Pjanić has been in excellent form this season and has nine goals and eight assists in Serie A so far.

Fernando (Sampdoria): Has been one of Samp’s best performers this season and, despite the results, has enhanced his reputation. This weekend he hit the bar from distance and grabbed a goal as Samp got a much-needed win against fellow strugglers Frosinone.

Borja Valero (Fiorentina): The Spaniard played in an advanced position in Fiorentina’s midfield and dictated play for La Viola. His perfect delivery from a corner led to Marcos Alonso’s opener.

Strikers:

Antonio Di Natale (Udinese): The veteran striker was instrumental in Udinese’s attacks and got an excellent assist for Badu’s goal, the opening goal on the day.

Grégoire Defrel (Sassuolo): He drew the foul from Mauricio that led to Sassuolo being awarded a penalty which Domenico Berardi scored. He also got on the scoresheet for the second in a week in a row and ensured that Sassuolo have now scored in eight straight away games in the league for the first time.

Stephane El Shaarawy (AS Roma): Scored a fantastic goal from range to give Roma the lead and wrapped up the game after seizing on Mohamed Salah’s saved effort. Since coming to Roma in January, El Shaarawy has been involved in five goals: four goals and one assist.

Italians in the UK: The Weekend Performances

In our weekly feature, here on Italian Football Daily, we take a look at the performances of Italians currently based in the top two divisions in England.

ENGLISH PREMIER LEAGUE

Claudio Ranieri (Manager – Leicester City)

Leicester City and Claudio Ranieri continue to lead the Premier League after a last gasp 1-0 win over Norwich City on Saturday.

Just when it looked like their title challenge was about to suffer a further setback after their 2-1 defeat at Arsenal in their last fixture, Leicester snatched victory from the jaws of despair with a last minute Leonardo Ulloa goal against Norwich.

Despite dominating much of the game, Leicester found it hard to break down a resilient and organised Norwich defence, and with only 20 minutes of the game remaining, Ranieri gambled by taking off N’Golo Kante, his holding midfielder, as his team looked to secure the win. The move paid off and, as they say, fortune favours the brave in title races.

After the game, Ranieri spoke to the media, indicating that:-

“It was a difficult match. Norwich played well and closed the space, but we believed until the end. This victory was very important to restart after the Arsenal defeat.

“I said before the Arsenal match that Norwich would be more difficult. Both teams could have scored a goal in the final 20 minutes.

“The conclusion I have drawn from this is that my players believe until the end. That, for me, is very important. If the other teams start to win, they can win all the matches. But for us, the next match is always the final match. That is our mentality.”

Leicester continue to head the Premier League by two points coming into a crucial week of games where they face West Bromwich Albion and Watford in a space of four days; although they should win both games on current form. If they’re still top at the start of next week, whisper it quietly, Ranieri might be the Champion of England.

Matteo Darmian (Manchester United)

Darmian missed Manchester United’s 3-2 win over Arsenal on Sunday due to a dislocated shoulder injury. In his absence, United fared well and the performance of young right-back Guillermo Varela means that Darmian might struggle to regain his place.

Angelo Ogbonna (West Ham United)

Angelo Ogbonna played the full 90 minutes as West Ham United Sunderland 1-0 on Saturday lunchtime.

Ogbonna once again put in an impressive performance, dealing easily with the threat posed by the Sunderland attack, as he looks to persuade Antonio Conte that he should be a member of the Azzurri squad that travels to the European Championships in France.

Graziano Pelle (Southampton)

Graziano Pelle was a 69th minute substitute as Southampton’s push for a Europa League spot was interrupted by a 2-1 home defeat against Chelsea. Pelle replaced Southampton’s goal-scorer, Shane Long, with the Saints 1-0 up, but was unable to help his side close out victory as the incessant Chelsea pressure eventually told, as 75th and 89th minute strikes from Cesc Fabregas and Branislav Ivanovic saw Chelsea take the points.

Francesco Guidolin (Manager) & Alberto Paloschi (Swansea City)

Francesco Guidolin’s Swansea City travelled to White Hart Lane on Sunday afternoon, hoping to take advantage of Tottenham Hotspur’s tiredness following their efforts against Fiorentina in the Europa League in midweek.

Former Chievo striker, Paloschi, was a key influence in the majority of Swansea’s attacks, almost turning provider early in the first-half as his cut-back to Gylfi Sigurdsson was turned over expertly by Hugo Lloris. Paloschi made no mistake when presented with the chance a few minutes later, seizing on a deflected shot to fire past the Spurs’ ‘keeper.

Despite further effort from Paloschi, who lead the attack well, Swansea were unable to capitalise on their deserved lead, and Spurs’ pressure told as they recovered to win the game 2-1.

Fabio Borini & Vito Mannone (Sunderland)

Sunderland lost further ground in their relegation battle with a 1-0 defeat to West Ham United on Saturday lunchtime.

Whilst Mannone may have been able to reach Michel Antonio’s curling shot, there was little doubt that his abundance of saves kept the scoreline respectable for the Black Cats. Mannone made a catalogue of outstanding saves, many of which had the West Ham players gobsmacked. Alas for Mannone and Sunderland, it was insufficient as Sunderland lacked the cutting edge to find the net to equalise.

Despite their failure to score, Fabio Borini was left on the substitutes’ bench by Sam Allardyce, somewhat surprisingly given his recent form and his influence on Sunderland’s last game against Manchester United.

ENGLISH CHAMPIONSHIP

Fernando Forestieri (Sheffield Wednesday)

Sheffield Wednesday remain just inside the play-off places after a 0-0 draw away at high-flying Hull City on Friday evening.

The evening was one to forget for Fernando Forestieri who as sent off the second match in succession, after picking up two yellow cards. The second yellow card was for diving, although the challenge which he avoided would have broken his leg if evasive action was not taken. The challenge was that bad that the Hull defender, Michael Dawson, had his hands in the air apologising to the referee after he made it. He too was surprised when Forestieri earned a booking for it. Despite his sending-off, Forestieri’s team-mates held on for a draw to maintain their promotion.

Diego Fabbrini (Birmingham City)

Diego Fabbrini made his first start for Birmingham City in their 2-0 defeat at QPR on Saturday afternoon, following his move from Middlesbrough at the end of the transfer window. Fabbrini played 69 minutes, but struggled to impress in the time he was on the pitch, as he was well handled by fellow Italian, Gabriele Angella.

Marco Antenucci, Giuseppe Bellusci and Marco Silvestri (Leeds United)

Leeds United travelled to Brighton and Hove Albion on Monday evening, hoping for a win to steer themselves clear of the slight threat of relegation that still hangs in the shadows. Leeds are only six places above the relegation zone, and their current form has seen them pick up only 3 points in their last 5 games.

Despite this relegation threat, the team failed to show up, and were 4-0 down at half-time. Brighton failed to add to their four goals after the break, but the damage was already done. It was no surprise that the result was met with further demands from the Leeds fans for the owner, Massimo Cellino, to sell the club immediately.

Of the Italians only Silvestri made the starting line-up. He had an indifferent game making several saves in the first-half, but was at fault for Brighton’s third goal. Antenucci was an unused substitute, whilst Bellusci did not make the match-day squad.

Gabriele Angella (Queens Park Rangers)

Gabriele Angella played a key role in Queens Park Rangers’ 2-0 home victory over Birmingham City on Saturday. Angella coped easily with the threat posed by fellow Italian, Diego Fabbrini, and could also have found himself on the score-sheet but for a fine save by the Birmingham goalkeeper, Tomas Kuszczak.

Federico Macheda (Cardiff City)

Federico Macheda was an unused substitute in Cardiff City’s 2-1 victory over Preston North End on Saturday.

Michael Agazzi (Middlesbrough)

Michael Agazzi once again failed to make the match-day squad for Middlesbrough’s 2-0 victory away at Fulham.
