Mario Gomez spoke to Rai pitchside moments after the final whistle blew on Fiorentina’s 2-0 win over Roma in the Coppa Italia quarter-final, where he scored two goals leading La Viola to a Coppa Italia semi final.
“I went through a tough spell but I spent almost a year on the sidelines. I needed to get my strength back before I could find my form of old and now that I’m fit again I’m having more of an impact. I never doubted my ability.”
He did play down his performance and praised Fiorentina’s team spirit:
“I’d rather talk about the team performance tonight though because we were magnificent. Both in defence and in the final third we played with real quality and determination.”
Mario Gomez has struggled at Fiorentina following his €20m move from Bayern Munich in 2013, scoring 5 goals in 23 games prior to this game. The German marksman will be hoping he can use this as a springboard to get back to his Bayern Munich form and help Fiorentina qualify for Europe.
