Referee Paolo Tagliavento and his assistants faced criticism following the Juventus-Napoli match from the prior weekend.
Following the defeat, Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis posted on Twitter accusing the refereeing team had supposedly “preferential treatment” in Juve’s favor and demanded a suspension.
Napoli had the chance to move into third place with a victory over Juventus, but the Torino Club kept good form and ended up winning the game by a 3-1 score line.
President of the Italian Referees’ Association (AIA), Marcello Nicchi told RaiSport that the referee nor his assistants would be suspended. “We need to be careful, because every single statement in football can cause violence” said Nicchi. He continued, “it is this type of statement that ultimately leads to the fact that in Italy, every year, 370 referees are hit or beaten up on the pitch.”
Nicchi was questioned about Cacares’ goal that put Juve up 2-1, which was questionable to be called offside. “How can we fault the linesman for that goal? It was an incredibly difficult decision on which Tagliavento has no responsibility and none of the Napoli players complained on the pitch” Nicchi responded.
He also offered his opinion on Francesco Totti’s “selfie” celebration after he scored against Lazio on the weekend. “With my AIA President hat on, I would say he should have been booked, but the referee used his common sense. I think we should concentrate on how beautiful the goal was.”
