Napoli vs Lazio Match Preview

Napoli take on Lazio at the San Paolo stadium in the last game of the Serie A season, with both sides battling it out for a place in next seasons Champions League play-offs.

Last weekend Napoli had the opportunity to go level on points with Lazio for at least 48 hours as the faced a Juventus who had rested a lot of first team players. A 3-1 defeat to the Serie A Champions and Lazio knew they only needed one point to qualify to the Champions League play-offs.

Lazio lost to their arch rivals Roma in the Derby della Capitale 2-1, a result which still means they need just a point to finish in third place. However a Napoli win will see them overtake Lazio in the table on head to head results and finishing level on points.

Past Meetings

These sides have already met three times this season with nothing to separate them, Napoli have already beaten Lazio in the League this season 1-0 with a goal from Higuain. In the Coppa Italia Semi-Finals Lazio defeated their opponents 2-1 over two legs grabbing a decisive win away from home in the second leg.

Pre-Match Quotes

Rafa Benitez

“I would like to thank the President, the club and all the fans because after two years I’m finishing my experience here with Napoli,”

“On Sunday we are facing a very important match and I want to conclude my two years here with a victory.”

Stefano Pioli

“This game will be decisive. Nobody must dare use the term ‘flop’ or ‘disappointment’ for Lazio’s season, no matter what happens tomorrow.”

“Who deserves third? We’ll know after tomorrow night. There’s no point saying anything else. I asked my players the same question, they know the answer.”

“Our objective this season was to bring back the passion. The attitude of the fans fires us up. I think we’ve laid the foundations for a Lazio that in future can achieve great things.”

Starting Line-Ups

Napoli: Andujar, Maggio, Albiol, Koulibaly, Ghoulam, David Lopez, Inler, Callejon, Hamsik, Mertens, Higuain

Lazio: Marchetti; de Vrij, Gentiletti, Mauricio; Basta, Parolo, Cataldi, Lulic; Candreva, Djordjevic, Felipe Anderson

Players to watch:

Gonzalo Higuain

The Argentine striker could well be leaving Napoli this summer with English sides Arsenal and Manchester United rumoured to be interested in the player. It’s business as usual though as the Napoli striker has scored 26 times this season, Benitez will be hoping he is in one of his better moods after poor performances in the last month for the club.

Felipe Anderson

The Brazilian could well be in many people’s Team of the Season after some outstanding performances for Lazio with 10 goals and 7 assists in Serie A keeping out Balde Keita out of the side.

Serie B Relegation play-out round-up

Virtus Entella 2-2 Modena (1st Leg)

Miguel Costa 25min (VE), Lorenzo Staiti 39 (VE), Luca Garritano 42 & 67min (Mod)

Virtus Entella: Paroni; Belli, Cesar, Ligi, Iacoponi; Staiti, Battocchio, Troiano; Costa Ferreira, Sforzini, Mazzarani

Modena: Pinsoglio; Calapai Gozzi Cionek Manfrin; Nizzetto Signori Martinelli Acosty; Garritano; Granoche

The most dreaded game in world football, the relegation play-off. More often than not these are matches ruled by fear as each team battles manfully to save themselves from the drop.

For Modena this game held extra significance, for years now the Gialloblu have held the status as being the powerhouse in the region that shares there name. In the last couple of years though two upstarts in particular have come and changed the natural order, in the shape of Sassuolo and Carpi.

If Modena want to regain their crown then relegation to Lega Pro is something to be avoided at all costs. Virtus Entella on the other hand were surprise promotion contenders last season in Lega Pro and the fact that they have left themselves in with a chance of staying up this season is more than many expected from them.

The match itself started with the hosts on top and they very nearly took the lead early on. A corner from the right was swung in with pace where it was met by the head of César. The ball look destined to nestle in the back of the net only for Pablo Granoche to acrobatically clear it off the line.

Entella did take the lead so after though. With 25 minutes on the clock Miguel Costa was the recipient of a perfect lay off from Ferdinando Sforzini, taking it first time from the edge of the area Costa curled it past Carlo Pinsoglio in the Modena net.

Six minutes before half time Virtus were in dream land as Lorenzo Staiti made it two. A cross from the right by Andrea Mazzarani was whipped in perfectly between the six yard box and the penalty spot. From there it was met by the head of the advancing Staiti who steered his header through the legs of Pinsoglio.

However three minutes later Modena got the lifeline they so desperately needed. A throw in out right was work into a crossing position. The resulting cross was poor but so was the defensive header which only went as far as Luca Garritano on the edge of the area. From there the grateful Modena forward drilled the ball into the top corner past a static Andrea Paroni.

Not long into the second half Modena thought they had got the all crucial equaliser. A free from the left was came for by Paroni, however the keepers punch was weak and only dropped to the feet Francesco Signori. Paroni though showing excellent reflexes quickly got back on his feet to make a fine save.

On 67 minutes the Gialloblu did finally get there equaliser and a fine goal it was. An attempted pass into the box bounced off a defender and up into the air. Keeping his eye on it the whole time Garritano watched it fall from the sky, then hitting it sweetly on the volley he guided expertly into the bottom left corner from just outside the box.

From there till the end both sides came close to a winner, but neither could find a way through. Two all the final score, advantage Modena heading into the second leg at the Braglia.

Serie B Promotion Semi-Final’s round-up

Pescara 1-0 Vicenza (1st Leg)

Ledian Memushaj 87min Pen (Pes)

Pescara: Fiorillo; Zampano, Salamon, Zuparic, Rossi; Torreira, Brugman; Politano, Bjarnason, Lazzari; Melchiorri: Subs Used: Caprari, Memushaj, Sansovini.

Vicenza: Vigorito; Sampirisi, Brighenti, Gentili, D’Elia; Vita, Moretti, Cinelli; Laverone, Petagna, Ragusa: Subs Used: Bremec, Camisa, Sbrissa.

It took 66 minutes for this match to kick into anything resembling life. Up to that point it had been a turgid affair between two sides too afraid to lose rather than looking for the win.

Pescara perhaps had the excuse of playing once already this week against Perugia in the Quarter final stage. Vicenza on the other hand had no such alibi, with all their focus since the end of the season being on this game.

In the end it was the Delfini who switched on the lights first, finally taking the game to their guests with the clock winding down. As the home side it was something they should probably have done much earlier, but better late than never.

In what proved to be a largely forgettable first 45 minutes of football it was the visitors, the Biancorossi, who had the better of the half chances created. The two most notable coming within moments of one another, the first an effort from outside the box from Salvatore D’Elia that ended up being deflected wide but still had Vincenzo Fiorillo in the net scrambling.

From the resulting corner Antonino Ragusa got in front of his marker at the near post only to drag his shot across the face of the goal and just past the left hand upright. The remaining 30 minutes of the half went by with next to nothing to report.

The second half started largely in the same vain with neither side looking as if they had the know how to break the other down. Then with 24 minutes left and the match trundling to its inevitable conclusion it finally sparked into life, with Pescara being the protagonists.

Matteo Politano’s long range drive forced Mauro Vigorito into a sharp save, with the Vicenza net minder getting down quickly to his right to turn the ball onto the post. Four minutes later and Pescara were cursing there look once more. A cross from the left found its way onto the head of Federico Melchiorri, but the big attacker could only head over what was a decent chance.

It was now all Pescara going forward with Vicenza being increasingly push back into their own half. Sansovini came close again only to be denied yet again by Vigorito. Things though would soon turn sour for the visiting keeper. With five minutes left an inch perfect through ball set Sansovini through on goal. With the keeper advancing Sansovini knocked it past him and ran on only to be taken down by the keepers trailing hand.

Referee Pairetto was given no option but to point to the spot and dish out the straight red to Vigorito. A couple of minutes then passed before Vicenza could sort matters out, but this had no effect on Delfini sub Ledian Memushaj, who strode up confidently to the ball and smashed it into the top right corner past replacement goalie Bremec.

Vicenza did come close to a leveller in stoppage time but a mixture of defenders and the woodwork kept the ball from going in. When the six minutes of added time did elapse the relief in the faces of Pescara players was plain to see. The Delfini take a one-nil lead to the Stadio Menti on Tuesday evening.

Avellino 0-1 Bologna (1st Leg)

Gianluca Sansone 24min (Bol)

Avellino: Frattali; Ely, Visconti, Almici, Regoli, Pisacane, Kone, Zito, Sbaffo, Mokulu, Comi: Subs Used: Bittante, Schiavon, Trotta.

Bologna: Da Costa; Oikonomou, Mbaye, Maietta, Masina; Matuzalem, Casarini, Laribi, Buchel; Mancosu, Sansone: Subs Used: Ferrari, Acquafresca, Krsticic.

The perhaps most stereotypical of Italian results, Bologna got there goal relatively early and then stifled there opposition until the end. That being said they did have to survive one or to hairy moments along the way.

Pity poor Avellino though despite giving there all they still came up short and now face the daunting trip to the Dall’Ara knowing the nothing less than a win will keep their dream of Serie A football alive.

Although it is not an impossibility, having picked up a point there earlier in the season and they were even leading one-nil at half time in that game. Tonight though they found themselves facing a very different Bologna side who looked resolute under the guidance of Coach Delio Rossi. A Rossoblu side who looked determined to make up for the failure of failing to secure automatic promotion.

Like the match earlier in the evening this game opened with very little in the way of goal scoring chances, but while the other game was just poor to watch this was far more intriguing with both side prodding and probing in the hope of finding some defensive weakness.

That defensive weakness was found on 24 minutes to the advantage of Bologna. Lurking on the shoulder of the last man, Gianluca Sansone raced onto a neatly played through ball. Although there may have been suspicions of offside neither referee or linesmen reacted and Sansone ran through onto the ball and first time from outside the box curled it just out of the reach of Pierluigi Frattali and into the bottom left corner.

Happy with taking the lead Bologna seemed content to sit back and soak up pressure and counter on the Lupi when given the chance. Despite now doing most of the pressing Avellino found it very difficult to carve out and decent openings, with their best effort of the half coming from Alberto Almici, who’s shot from distance scurried just around the post after taking a deflection.

One-nil Bologna at the break.

The side’s eagerness to get going again was showcased in the fact that half-time only lasted 14 minutes a full minute short of the minimum standard. Again though it proved a tight affair with neither side really being able to fully outfox the other.

Then on 59 minutes came what would prove to be probably Avellino’s best chance of the game. A cross from the right somehow found its way through a host of bodies to Antonio Zito at the back post. Zito’s first touch though was poor forcing him to rush his shot from an ever increasingly tighter angle. In the end Da Costa in the net was more than equal to what had been a glorious chance. From there till the end Bologna did what was necessary, keeping the host to a few headed chances that on another day may have gone in.

Bologna won’t care though they are well in truly in the driving seat as they head back to the Dall’Ara.

Former Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti and Milan sporting director, Adriano Galliani, spoke to the media about a possible reunion in the near future.

Following Real Madrid’s exit in the Champions League at the hands of Juventus and Barcelona’s title win in La Liga, los blancos president Florentino Perez relieved Carlo Ancelotti of his duties effective immediately just a year after winning the club’s 10th Champions League title in their history, la decima, together. Lazio’s Future Dependent On Crucial Clash With Napoli

With Lazio’s Champions League berth hanging in the balance, Stefano Pioli’s side need a win or a draw against Napoli on the final match-day.

In the past, many have alluded to the importance of achieving Champions League football in order to obtain financial security. This could not be more relevant to any side more than Lazio. The biancocelesti go into the final match-day of the Serie A season and face off against Rafa Benitez’ Napoli. If they lose, the partenopei would tie them for points on the season but would get ahead of them in the standings due to head to head clashes. Should this happen, Lazio will find themselves in fourth place and in the Europa League without lucrative Champions League football and money.

According to Sky Sport 24, Lazio’s future as a club is highly dependent on their qualification to the Champions League. If they do no finish third, there is a good chance that Federico Marchetti, Senad Lulic and Stefan Radu will be on their way out. Moreover, Lucas Biglia, who is a crucial part to this team’s success, will also reportedly leave the club. There is interest in the player in Spain and in France from Paris Saint-Germain.

Roma Confident In Their Pursuit For Nainggolan

Over the past few weeks, Roma have been negotiating with Cagliari for the other half of their midfielder, Radja Nainggolan and there is renewed optimism around both parties.

When Nainggolan was first purchased by the giallorossi many expected him to act as an option off the bench. With injury issues, however, the midfielder was thrust into the limelight and rose to the occasion. Over the course of the last season and a half, the former Cagliari midfielder has developed into one of the side’s, if not the team’s best midfielder. Cagliari took note of his performances for Rudi Garcia’s team and raised their asking price for the other half of Nainggolan. This prompted caution from Roma’s part and negotiations halted. However, now it appears that both parties are nearing an agreement.

According to Sky Sport 24, Roma are doing everything in their power to avoid going to a silent auction with Cagliari over Nainggolan at the end of June. Due to this, the club is willing to raise their bid by 3 million euros and offer Cagliari 12 million euros for the remaining half of Nainggolan. This would reportedly tempt the newly relegated side to part ways with the Belgian.

Milan: Donnarumma has caught the eyes of Europe after Euro U17

Gianluigi Donnarumma, Milan’s goalkeeper from their youth ranks, was considered one of the best goalkeepers in the U17 Euro and has many European clubs on their radar.

According to Nicolo Schira of Gazzetta Dello Sport, big European clubs such as Real Madrid, Manchester United, Chelsea and PSG have been keeping an eye on the young goalkeeper who has a promising future.

Donnarumma had a great Euro U17 tournament and along with Luca Zidane (son of Zinedine Zidane) both were considered as the best goalkeepers.

Even prominent player agent Mino Raiola has inquired about the future Gianluigi Buffon.

Pippo Inzaghi called up Donnarumma several times during the season, and requested an exception from FIFA to allow the 15 year-old to be on the bench against Cesena. Donnarumma is expected to be Milan’s third string goalkeeper next season. He is signed with Milan till 2018.

This assumes, of course, that Adriano Galliani will loan out Brazilian ‘keeper Gabriel to Carpi, while resigning Abbiati to be the backup to Diego Lopez.

At the press conference to announce his departure Benítez thanked the club and its fans for all it has given him over the last number of years,

“I would like to thank the President, the club and all the fans because after two years I’m finishing my experience here with Napoli,” Benítez said.

“On Sunday we are facing a very important match and I want to conclude my two years here with a victory.

“It’s always sad to leave a job where the people have treated you well from the start and Napoli was like this to me.”

Speculation now mounts as to who will replace Benítez at the San Paolo

No bids at Final Parma auction

With each passing hour Parma stare further and further into the abyss as the club struggles to survive another set back.

The fifth and final auction for the purchase of the Gialloblu was held earlier this morning, with the asking price set at just under €6 million. However no bid was forthcoming leaving the club in a very precarious position.

The club released a statement on its official website revealing that no offers had been made for the Crociati,

“The Bankruptcy administrators of Parma Fc, Dr Angelo Anedda and Dr Alberto Guiotto, communicate that at 12.00 today May 28, 2015 no binding offer for the purchase of the club has been delivered to the notary Julius Almansi, appointed by Judge Dr. Pietro Rogato to oversee the operations of sale of the company’s competitive sports Parma FC.”

“Over the next few hours administrators will discuss with the Committee of Creditors and the Bankruptcy Judge for the necessary decisions on the future of sport and the possible continuation of the provisional budget.”

What next for the beleaguered club remains very much in doubt, there still remains the possibility that the club may be sold privately or that another auction may managed to be held in June. All this being said Parma’s future is hanging by a thread

Player Focus: Riccardo Saponara

Empoli loanee and Rossoneri-owned playmaker Riccardo Saponara has begun living up to the hype in 2015 that once coined him the “Kaka of Serie B”

23-year old Riccardo Saponara has proven in 2015 that he is a player of Serie A caliber. The player returned to Empoli on loan from Milan in January 2015 after the former U-21 Italian rode the bench with the rossoneri, only to come back the club where he was once drew comparisons to Kaká. With less than a dozen appearances for the San Siro outfit in his career, a homecoming was meant to be for the playmaker as he played a key role in clinching Serie A football next season for the azzurri.

What you need to know

Full name: Riccardo Saponara

Date of birth: 12.21.91 (Age 23)

Position: Attacking Midfielder

Nationality: Italy

Current club: Empoli (on loan from A.C. Milan)

Height: 1.84 m

National caps: U-18 (3), U-19 (1), U-21 (22, 3 goals)

Who is Saponara?

After catching the eyes of many top-flight clubs in Italy, it was Milan who managed to corral the prized young Italian. Saponara arrived to the Rossoneri in January of 2013, however the player remained with Empoli until the remainder of the season which was his best campaign yet, scoring 13 goals while assisting fifteen in all competitions. The attacking midfielder was huge in bringing the club to the Serie B promotion play-off final where they fell to Livorno who earned promotion to Serie A. Since then, the Italian was given just eight appearances by Milan before being loaned back to the Sarri-managed side this past January on a loan deal with an option to buy set at €4m.

For country, Saponara has seen his fair share of caps spanning from U-18 to U-21. However, it was in 2013 when the Italian earned a spot on the U-21 Italy squad led by Devis Mangia to participate in the UEFA European U-21 tournament. On the biggest stage of his young career, the gifted player scored a goal against Israel in a 4-0 win for the azzurrini before bowing out in the final to Spain 4-2.

Strengths and Weaknesses

A player that possesses great ability, Saponara does a little bit of everything as a footballer. As a trequartista, he is a plus passer of the ball which is certainly a quality needed if you want to draw comparisons to a legend like Kaká. The 15 assists he amassed in his superb season in 2012-13 proves that he is a pure playmaker and defines what it means to be a creator of chances. When given the chance around net, Saponara is a solid finisher and has the ability to accumulate goals which is what he has done in just 16 appearances since January for Empoli, scoring seven times. His best goal this season was of the “bicycle” variety, justifying his understanding of 18-yard box. Perhaps we haven’t seen enough of him in the top-flight to gauge how he compares to Kaká as a dribbler but he does control the ball well from what has been on display with Empoli. At age 23, he is only sniffing the surface of his potential.

With many young players, there is always room for growth and it’s no different with Saponara. Aerial duels aren’t his forte and may never be but it’s an area of his game that does need some tuning. While it could be nitpicking, he does at times hesitate in making the clinical pass around the box but because he has a hungry edge of confidence, maturity should correct this. As an Empoli player, he has proven that talent isn’t the issue as much as earning consistent playing time is which severely lacked while wearing red and black.

2015-16 and Beyond

With his solid second half of the season, Riccardo Saponara has shown that Milan made a mistake in not deploying him into the squad more often as he has been everything the Rossoneri could have hoped for but for another club. With his loan deal set to expire this summer, Empoli have made it clear that they will exercise their €4m option on Saponara and bring him back for next season in Serie A. However, Empoli could also shop him around as interest appears to be looming for his services from some of the top clubs in the peninsula. Regardless, it appears his short-lived Milan career is all but over which is saddening considering that he was never truly given the opportunity to prove his worth. Because he never played much before moving back to Empoli, his international status remains in limbo as he will now have to leapfrog others who are ahead of him in the pecking order and prove to Antonio Conte that he is ready for the call-up. On the other side, if he continues to shine like he has for Maurizio Sarri or whoever manages the club next season, there is optimism that he could get the nod and make his first appearance for Italy’s first team sooner rather than later. Finally given the chance with “the Blues”, Saponara has proven that he belongs in Serie A.

The striker is co owned by Parma and Cesena, and he might be the number one target for the Rossoneri this summer.

Milan has enquired about the French born striker, who scored 9 goals in 35 matches.

The 23 year old forward has scored only 15 goals in 100 matches for Cesena. Milan must see potential in the striker in order to desire an attacking player with such a low goal total.

Serie B Promotion Play-Off round-up

Perugia 1-2 Pescara

Edoardo Goldaniga 52min (Per)

Matteo Politano 62min (Pes), Birkir Bjarnason 74min pen (Pes)

Perugia:  Koprivec, Fazzi, Goldaniga, Verre, Falcinelli, Crescenzi, Rizzo (34′ 2nd Lanzafame), Fossati, Giacomazzi (32′ 2nd Fabinho), Mantovani, Ardemagni (20′ 2nd Parigini)

Pescara: Fiorillo, Pucino, Fornasier, Politano (34′ 2nd Abecasis), Bjarnason, Melchiorri, Zampano, Salamon (43′ 2nd Zuparic), Pasquato, Memushaj (14′ 2nd Brugman), Torreira

The Renato Curi on a wet Tuesday evening in May, is not the place you’d expect to find a World Cup winner. However that is exactly were Massimo Oddo found himself as he lead his Pescara troops to victory in the Promotion play-off quarter final against Perugia.

Oddo had only being appointed by the Abruzzo outfit for the final round of fixtures in the regular season. Yet despite this and the ferocious home support it was the Delfini who started the brighter and should have in fact taken the lead as early as the seventh minute.

Federico Melchiorri passing up a guilt edge chance by slamming the ball off the post and wide from eight yards with the goal gaping after Grifone Keeper Jan Koprivec was only able to palm away an initial effort into his path.

In a first half devoid of goal mouth chances but certainly not lacking for passion, with four players booked in the opening 45 minutes, it was Melchiorri and Pescara who came closest again as the clock ticked towards the break.

After beautifully spinning away from his man the Delfini number nine advanced into the area only to smash the ball high and over.  Even with the angle tightening and defenders breathing down his back the 28 year old Melchiorri should have hit the target at the very least.

The second half started much better for the hosts and on 52 minutes they had taken an unlikely lead. A free kick near the right hand side line was whipped in towards the back post where it was met by the soaring head of Edoardo Goldangia who directed the ball back where it came from and into the far left corner of the goal past a despairing Vincenzo Fiorillo.

After a first half in which they had failed to get into gear it was now all Perugia as they came close again only a few minutes later with another headed effort going narrowly wide of the left hand post. Pescara though regrouped and on 62 minutes got themselves back on level terms.

Matteo Politano taking on his man drove into the box before drilling low and hard at the goal. While yes there was decent pace on the shot it did not have enough power in it to trouble a keeper of this level. However diving to his left Koprivec somehow managed to let the ball go under his body and settle in the back of his net. A criminal mistake by the 26 year old Slovenian which handed the initiative back to the visitors.

An initiative they took full advantage of as on 74 minutes they took the lead for the first time in the match, albeit from the penalty spot. Ezio Fossati the guilty party for Perugia as he inexplicably hacked down his man from behind giving the referee no other choice then to point to the spot.

Birkir Bjarnason proceed to step up and smash the ball into the roof of the net, sending the travelling support wild. Knowing that they had only 15 minutes to salvage there season Perugia push forward with all there might, but try as they like they were unable to find a way through the impenetrable wall that was Pescara.

When referee Michael Fabbri did finally blow the final whistle the Pescara faithful erupted with a mixture of joy and relief, the Delfini advance to face Vicenza, with Serie A still a real possibility, Perugia meanwhile will turn their minds to next and another year in Serie B.

Spezia 1 – 2 Avellino (After Extra Time)

Josip Brezovec 71min (Spe)

Antonio Zito 40min (Ave), Gianmario Comi 96min ET (Ave)

Spezia: Chichizola; Milos, Piccolo, Bianchetti, Migliore; Brezovec, Juande; Kvrzic, Catellani, Situm; Nenè

Avellino: Frattali; Almici, Ely, Pisacane, Visconti; Koné, Arini, Zito; Sbaffo; Trotta, Mokulu

120 minutes that’s what it took, 120 minutes of passion tension and one hell of an amount of grit, but Avellino got there in the end. The Lupi playing with only ten men for 79 minutes dug deep into their bank of reserves but it was enough to see off Spezia in the second of the promotion play-off quarter finals.

The win means that Avellino march on to play Bologna, while Spezia are left to contemplate what might have been.

The atmosphere before kick-off was nothing short of electric as both sets of supporters battled for supremacy of the stands. On the pitch it was the hosts who made most of the earlier running, but clear cut chances proved as rare as Hen’s teeth.

The best of which in the opening half falling to Spezia’s Niccolo Giannetti who had replaced the injured Nené on 29 minutes. Controlling a cross from the right on his chest he let the ball bounce in front of him before lashing it at goal, but Pierluigi Frattali was equal to it knocking it to safety with his legs. All that being said if the effort had been placed only just to the left or right it would have been a certain goal.

The ultimate breakthrough did come soon after but instead of Spezia it was Avellino who took the lead. A cross from the right managed to evade three men before finding its way through to Antonio Zito who gratefully headed home from only six yards out.

If the Lupi now expected to go on and exert their dominance on the fixture they were sorely mistaken as only one minute later they were down to ten men as Mariano Arini was given his marching orders for a second yellow.

Nevertheless the visitors managed to get into the break one up and looked to regroup for the second half. However it was Spezia who game out all guns blazing with Avellino seemingly determined to just kick them into submission.

16 minutes into the second period Spezia thought they had got themselves back on level terms after Josip Brezovec smashed home a wonder effort only for Referee Gavillucci to blow it back for a dubious foul in the build up

Four minutes later Spezia had the ball in the back of the net again only for this one to be blown up for offside. The equaliser did eventually come on 71 minutes Brezovec slamming home from just in front of the penalty spot after some ping pong in the area.

With the extra man Spezia now push for the winner but found Frattali in excellent form between the sticks. In the final minute of normal time Giannetti went agonisingly close when his header shaved the post, but wide it went and extra time was required.

If the scores remained the same at the end of 120 minutes Spezia would advance due to finishing higher in the league, but that was not in the God’s plans as six minutes into the first period of extra time a free from the left was duly dispatched by Gianmario Comi and from there to the end Avellino defended resolutely to secure there passage to the next round.

Berlusconi optimistic Ancelotti will join Milan

Silvio Berlusconi is attempting to pursuade Carlo Ancelotti to join Milan, after getting sacked by Real Madrid.

The ex-Milan coach had dinner with Adriano Galliani yesterday evening but the meeting didn’t bear fruit. Galliani is staying in Madrid in the hopes of convincing Ancelotti to return to Milan.

According to goal.com the meeting took place at the Wellington Hotel, where Ancelotti reiterated his intention to take a year off. However Galliani wants Ancelotti to be the catalyst to relaunch the rossoneri back to higher ranks of European football.

Galliani plans to remain in Madrid till Thursday, when Ancelotti will leave for Canada (Vancouver) to perform a planned surgery due to a spinal stenosis. According to Gazzetta Dello Sport, the two will meet again for dinner.

Milan seems set to invest this summer and hopes it is an incentive to lure Carletto back.

Meanwhile, Berlusconi was on Radio Capital and said this regarding his attempt to hire Ancelotti

“I hope that Galliani can convince him (Ancelotti) to come to Milan. I am optimistic and so is Galliani. Carletto wanted to take some time off, it is not easy to coach a big club like Real. I hope Galliani, who has a profound mutual respect for Ancelotti can convince him to help us remake Milan great.”

Berlusconi also discussed the rumours about the potential sale of the club.

“I never thought of selling Milan, but only looked for investors to help out financially. I am looking for some help but I didn’t find it yet.”

If things don’t pan out with Ancelotti, Berlusconi already has four alternatives in mind.

“Four alternatives are being considered: one from abroad, the others from Italy.”

Not surprisingly, the rumours are the foreign coach being considered is Siviglia’s Unai Emery. Locally the options being considered are Antonio Conte (Italian national team coach), Maurizio Sarri (Empoli) and Vincenzo Montella (Fiorentina).

After only a single season in charge at the Fruilli, Andrea Stramaccioni’s time at Udinese looks as if it may be coming to a premature end.

Parma edging towards Serie D

On the pitch Parma’s misery is finished for the year, off it however it is set to drag long into the summer months. The plight that surrounds the Gialloblu is nothing new, but there is increasing fears that the Crociati may be forced to restart next season down in Serie D.

Goal.com is reporting the words of AIC President Damiano Tommasi, words that are sure to bring little comfort to all Parma supporters around the globe. This is what Tommasi had to say,

“I have no good news: the sporting debt is very high and for to many months there was no talk on who created this situation.”

Tommasi further went on to absolve any of the players of blame about what has engulfed the club, pointing the finger solely at those off it. Finally the former Italian international spoke of his hope that the club would ultimately find a buyer,

“We have lowered the sporting debt as much as possible, which was very important. Now we have to wait for investors, some of whom have shown interest in the club. We hope to get a concrete offer. Parma is the consequence of very bad management.”

Despite Tommasi’s hopes that the club will be bought, the future continues to look bleak as four auctions to sell the club have yet to unearth a single bidder.

Milan, Rami ready to leave if Inzaghi remains coach

Milan defender Adil Rami discussed his future plans during an interview with L’Équipe du Soir.

The French defender played regularly in 2014 when he arrived on loan, however this season under Pippo Inzaghi he only made three appearances.

During a rapid fire question session Rami was asked several questions about his form and playing for France.  He was then asked about his thoughts on his plans with Milan going forward.

Rami is looking at his options and wants to play regularly.

Here is what he had to say about his future plans:

“I will make a choice in regards to the Euro (where he would like to be part of host France’s roster) and my career. I will wait to see what happens, I have two years remaining on my contract and I can be patient. My primary objective is to find a team that will give me playing time and why not a club that is going to Champions League?”

As for possible destinations, he was not specific and open to any possibility.

“Play with Lyon? In France or elsewhere why not?”

Finally he addressed his plans with Milan, and his reluctance to play for Inzaghi going forward.

“My strategy is to wait and see what is going on with Milan with regards to the coaches. If the Milan coach next season is Pippo Inzaghi, I will try to find playing time elsewhere, otherwise I will stay at Milan.”

Rami believes he improved his play since his arrival in Italy.

“I believe I am not the same today. I feel fresh and did enormous work tactically and physically.”

Albano Bizzarri- Chievo’s Unlikely Savior

On the banks of the Adige River, a hero has quietly emerged for one of Verona’s football clubs.

Veteran goaltender Albano Bizzarri’s heroics for Chievo in the closing portion of 2014 and all through 2015 have galvanized the Flying Donkeys into staving off the drop, and put the team on course for a potential finish above their town rivals Hellas going into the final round of fixtures of the 14/15 season.

Bizzarri arrived at the Stadio Bentegodi after ping-ponging around Spain and Italy, with spells at clubs as varied as Real Madrid and Catania. The 37-year-old was seemingly signed as an experienced backup to Francesco Bardi (on loan from Inter), and for the opening act of the season that is what he was. However, a series of failing by Bardi and the Chievo defense in the first quarter of the season left the team second from bottom, taking just four points and suffering a staggering seven defeats in their opening nine matches. Rolando Maran opted to give Bizzarri his first start in the 10th round, against Sassuolo, in a bid to switch things up and try to get a result. A clean sheet against the neroverdi on his debut gave the new signing a place in the next fixture, and he went on to galvanize the team into a 5 game unbeaten run, during the course of which Bizzarri held three shutouts (against Sassuolo, Lazio, and Cagliari) and conceded just twice.

Pleased with the work the Argentinian was doing, Maran made the man with the 1 on the back of his shirt Chievo’s real #1, and left Bardi on the bench for all but one of the ensuing fixtures. Despite a somewhat fortunate run in his first several games, Bizzarri’s quality did not drop significantly in subsequent starts. Routinely keeping the opposition goal-dry, his heroics between the sticks gradually began to lift Chievo up from the relegation zone and into the relative safety of  15th-17th place.

After losing seven of the club’s first nine games, Chievo lost just seven in the following 28, with Bizzarri overseeing six and Bardi, given a chance to redeem himself two weeks ago, at fault for the seventh. However, just two of the losses, away against Empoli and Sassuolo, suffered with the Argentinian tending the goal were inflicted by teams not challenging for European places. Juventus, Napoli, Fiorentina, and Inter all came away with three points from the Flying Donkeys, but even against these Serie A big boys, Bizzarri managed to limit his opponents to no more than two goals each.

From his debut in November to Chievo’s 1-1 draw with Atalanta this past Sunday, the 37-year-old kept a stunning 13 clean sheets and conceded just 21 goals, the second-least of any shot-stopper with over 25 starts.

Despite having the best season for an Argentinian goalkeeper in quite some time, Gerardo Martino neglected to call the veteran to his 2015 Copa America squad. Instead, from Serie A he elected to bring Sergio Romero and Mariano Andujar, from Sampdoria and Napoli, respectively, to be part of the 30-man preliminary roster. Romero and Andujar, who combined not only played fewer matches than Bizzarri, but managed to let past more goals. A monumental oversight of a player in the twilight of his career, who completed one of, if not his best season as a professional.

Not only becoming the key to Chievo’s salvation, Bizzarri has emerged as this year’s unlikely hero, and the undisputed keeper of the season. Almost seven months on from his debut with the Flying Donkeys following a spell of just two league games in two calendar years stretching from November 2012-14, Bizzarri has gone from an “old man” preventing a future Azzurri hopeful from getting the necessary playing time to develop, to one of the first names on the lips of the Chievo faithful.

Derby Della Capitale: Two Roma fans stabbed, traffic chaos

In today’s crucial clash for second place between Roma and Lazio in the derby della capitale, two Roma fans were stabbed near Stadio Olimpico.

According to news agency ansa.it, police reported that both Roma fans, aged 31 and 38, respectively, were stabbed in the abdomen and rushed by ambulance to hospital. Luckily the authorities said it appears the injuries were not life-threatening.

The derby in Rome is one of the most intense in Italy and some form of violence always takes place. The tension between the rivals often reaches a point of danger and even an increased riot police presence can’t guarantee everyone’s safety.

Despite the best efforts of the police, traffic chaos ensued as a decision was made to limit the vehicles in the centre of the city. The road closures caused major headaches for drivers as traffic stopped to halt.

Juventus, injured Barzagli risks Champions League final

Juventus defender Andrea Barzagli risks missing the Champions League final against Barcelona on June 6 in Berlin due to an injury on his right thigh.

Barzagli sustained an injury during Saturday’s 3-1 win over Napoli and underwent an MRI scan.

Courtesy of juventus.com

“The medical examination showed that the defender has suffered a first grade tear of the rectus femoris muscle in his right thigh.
Barzagli will now begin treatment and both his condition and availability for June’s Champions League final are to be monitored on a day-to-day basis.”

Barzagli missed the majority of the season as he recovered from a heel injury sustained in last year’s FIFA World Cup in Brazil. He returned in March and played a key role in the Juventus backline. In fact, in Champions League play Juventus have not conceded a goal while Barzagli has been on the pitch.

His veteran presence will be missed if he does not recover for the final. Massimiliano Allegri surely would have depended on Barzagli’s experience and leadership to keep Barcelona’s lethal attack at bay.

Panathinaikos Close In On Essien

AC Milan midfielder Michael Essien is destined to leave the club this summer after spending just one full season at the club with Panathinaikos closing in on his signature.

The Ghanian international moved to the Rossoneri in January 2014 on a free transfer from Chelsea, a club where he spent nine seasons at. During his time at Chelsea, he won trophies including the Premier League and the prestigious Champions League. He also spent one season at Real Madrid with Jose Mourinho, who originally signed him from Lyon in 2004.

But now his time in Italy appears to be coming to an end as his contract expires this summer and the Rossoneri have shown no intent on renewing the player’s deal. It’s also understood that Essien is not keen on renewing his contract with the Italian giants due to a lack of playing time. AC Milan are looking to rebuild their squad for the new season and have deemed Essien as a player who is no longer needed.

This has prompted Greek giants Panathinaikos to come knocking on the door to invite Essien to join them this summer on a free transfer. The club have offered him a 2 year contract worth €1.1m per season, which could rise to €1.5m in bonuses, according to Gianluca Di Marzio.

The player seems fascinated and attracted by the proposal, but it’s reported that he will take some time for him to decide on the move with his entire family. Next week, his agent is expected in Athens to evaluate the offer. Whether the move goes through or not, one thing’s for certain: Michael Essien will be leaving AC Milan this summer.

Inter Targeting Filipe Luis and Darmian

Inter are looking to reinforce the fullback positions on the roster in the form of two experienced internationals.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Chelsea’s fullback Filipe Luis is in Inter’s cross-hairs, due to his lack of playing time. The Brazilian only managed to make 15 appearances all season.

The other is Italy’s Matteo Darmian, who’s been a regular for the past few seasons for Giampiero Ventura’s Torino outfit. It would be a difficult transfer to pull off due to Torino’s higher asking price.

Del Piero: “I believe that Juventus and Barcelona come into the finale with the same…”

Former Juventus striker Alessandro Del Piero spoke to ESPN ahead of the UEFA Champions League finale that sees his ‘Old Lady’ match up against the Spanish champions, Barcelona.

“I believe that Juventus and Barcelona come into the finale with the same chances of winning. The Blaugrana have strong individuals, and they are very dangerous but Juventus beat the defending champions, proving to be a compact and solid team.”

“Whether I’ll keep playing or not? I don’t know, I’ve finished in India and now I continue to train to stay in form. There are places in the world in which I can go to, but I need to take into consideration my family. I could find a solution in two months.”

“Problems in Italian football? You’re talking about a cultural movement, a part of the solution will be given by the clubs work, the federation and fans. It’s not easy for Italy and not just at the footballing levels.”

“Juventus getting to the finale of the Champions League can bring enthusiasm and can be a first step for winning like in the past”

Inzaghi: I Hope To Stay

Milan Coach spoke on the eve of the final home game of season against Torino: “I hope to stay again next year. I have made errors? Yes, but I tried my best.”

Milan host Torino on Sunday night in their final home game of season. All hopes of qualifying for the Europa League have turned to ashes but Milan are still looking to end their nightmare of a season positively.

Reports are flying in that Milan are looking to bring Real Madrid boss and former coach Carlo Ancelotti for the upcoming season, but ‘SuperPippo’ is confident that he’ll be spending another season on the Rossoneri bench.

“This year we have made mistakes, but I think that both myself and the team have grown. All of us will have to do better next season. For myself, I hope to stay and do better. I hope that I can bring Milan back to where it belongs, I have some ideas on how I can achieve this.

“I definitely have some regrets, but I think I can hold my head high because I gave everything I had. Everyone was unhappy with the amount of injuries the squad were having, but there’s not much we can do about that.

“Ancelotti? It’s great to here that he’s interested in coming back, as he said he will return to Milan some day. However, no one has told me anything, even President [Silvio] Berlusconi has openly said that Milan are not looking for anyone.”

The Italian was asked about the club’s President, Silvio Berlusconi but refused to comment on him.

“I mustn’t give any answer regarding the President. During these nine months, he has shown me support and he has also complimented me on my work. Obviously, at times we found disagreements, but I have always been allowed to work in peace. Again, I’d like to say that I want to give my best to this club and I expect the club to communicate what it feels best.”

Inzaghi also left a few comments regarding the fixture against Torino, which takes place at the San Siro at 19:45 PM UK time.

“We mustn’t think of the players we are missing, but only to play a good game against Torino. It will be a complicated match as they are a side who play well, but we hope to make a good impression in the final home game of the season. Fans in recent times have come to the San Siro with disappointment, we must try and win their hearts back by showing what the jersey means to us.”

Injury-plagued forward Stephan El Shaarawy has barely had any minutes on the pitch in the past few seasons, but Inzaghi has faith in him and has said that he may start from the first minute against the Granata, as well as commenting on youngster Davide Di Molfetta.

“I think I may give Stephan [El Shaarawy] a starting spot. But let’s not forget the fact that he has just come back from a long term injury. If he looks well, I think he will play, otherwise in that role I could decide to use Di Molfetta. He’s [Di Molfetta] a very useful player in that area of the field.”

M’Baye Niang and Riccardo Saponara are both out on loan to Genoa and Empoli respectively and they’ve both had great spells, but Inzaghi feels they were not developed well enough to earn a starting role for Milan.

“Certainly, if they weren’t interesting young players, Milan wouldn’t of purchased them in the first place. Unfortunately, in Italy we do not have the patience to wait. I remember in the home defeat to Palermo earlier this season, Saponara was by far the best player on the field but the following day newspapers said he was disappointing.

“I’ve coached the youth team to know better than most. There are many great young talents, but it’s best for them to wait for the right moment for them to begin. [Gian Filippo] Felicioli is a great young talent and he was born in 1997. There are also good players who were born in 1998.”

The Milan side that Inzaghi saw against Sassuolo and Napoli impressed him, and he also heaped praise on star players Bonaventura and Diego Lopez for what they had to say about him during the week.

“I think that in the last three games, we have played with the right attitude. I’m sure that if luck was on our side, the outcomes of the Sassuolo and Napoi games would of had different outcomes. The words of Diego Lopez and Bonaventura are the words spoken by real men.”

Finally, the Rossoneri Coach commented on the past successes of Milan and spoke of how he hopes to bring Milan back to its former glories.

“I am convinced that, errors aside, this year we were unlucky. I am happy that many fans have written to me to remember the final in Athens in 2007. In the final in Istanbul in 2005, however, I couldn’t give my contribution and I suffered from that.”
