Serie B week 42 round-up

With that another Serie B season has come to a close, after 42 grueling weeks of action it’s is time for the unsung men of Italy’s second tier to take some well earned R&R, that is of course if they are not involved in the crucial relegation and Promotion play-offs still to come.

What has been a historic season in Serie B, which has seen two clubs promoted to Serie A for the first time in there histories, may still spring a surprise or two as Modena face Virtus Entella for the right to remain in Serie B next season.

While at the other end Avellino, Pescara, Perugia, Spezia, Bologna and Vicenza are set to do battle to see who will be joining Carpi and Frosinone in Serie A next season. For now though lets find out how an action packed week 42 brought the season to its conclusion.

We’ll start with Avellino’s trip to already relegated Brescia. The Lupi knew that a win at the Rigamonti would secure a place in the play-offs and would have been confident heading in against an opponent with nothing to play for. However it seemed that the Biancoazzurri never received the memo.

With only 19 minutes on the clock Daniele Corvia had the hosts in front, latching onto a through ball he strode into the box before cutting back inside his man and curling an effort into the bottom right hand corner of the net. That goal stung Avellino into life as two minutes later they were back on level terms.

A cross from the right was deflected up into the air by a Brescia defender into the path of Gianmario Comi, who showcasing perfect technique proceeded to produce a spectacular Bicycle kick into the top left corner. On the stroke of half time though Brescia had restored there lead, Victor Da Silva with a fine curling effort from distance.

Alessio Sestu made it three-one ten minutes into the second half, before Comi added a consolation for Avellino late on. Despite the defeat the result had no negative connotations for the Lupi as results elsewhere went in there favour as we are about to find out.

Christian Pannuci’s Livorno made the trip to the Adriatico to face Pescara knowing that they were full well in with a chance of claiming a position in the promotion play offs. For one reason or another though the Amaranto completely capitulated on the night, leaving the Delfini cruise to a three-nil win. The goals coming from Federico Melchiorri and two from Birkir Bjarnason.

The win for Pescara means that are still in with a shout of Serie A, for Livorno however a disappointing season comes to a fitting conclusion.

If truth be told the real drama of the night was at the bottom as numerous teams faith hung in the balance. The biggest game of the lot saw sixth from bottom Crotone take on fourth from bottom Virtus Entella. Despite there being an excellent atmosphere at the Ezio Scida it was a tight affair between two clubs battling for there lives.

Entella would have the slightly better of the chances but were unable to find a way past Cordaz in the Rossoblu net. As such the match finish nil all, meaning Crotone are safe for another year, but Entella must face the dreaded Relegation play-out.

Where there opponents will be none other than Modena. The Gialloblu threw away an early lead, given to them by ace goal poacher Pablo Granoche, against Latina. Nine minutes after Granoche scrambled the ball home a hand ball in the box offered Latina the chance to level matters from the spot, something Federico Viviani made no mistake in doing.

Entella an Modena have two more games to save there season, which is more than can be said for poor old Cittadella. Already facing a though task in there attempts to survive, Citta were unable to pull it out of the fire as they went down two-nil at home to Perugia. Fabinho and Vittorio Parigini with the telling goals.

That being said things could have been so much different if Citta had managed to take one or two of the decent chances that presented themselves throughout the game. Now though Lega Pro awaits and one but can not feel that we might have seen the last of Andrea Pierobon Citta’s 45 year old keeper.

Elsewhere around the league a Nene Volley from five yards out just past the hour mark was enough to see Spezia overcome the visiting Bari, while Carpi and Catania played out a nil all draw at the Cabassi.

Down in Sicily Trapani say off Pro Vercelli. Davis Curiale gave the Granata the lead on four minutes, running onto a beautiful chip pass over the top to finish into the bottom left. It was two on 48 minutes Mattia Caldara heading home a corner at the near post. Giacomo Beretta did pull one back for Vercelli after some rather shabby goalkeeping from Gomis. Two-one it finished.

In a rain soaked Terni, Ternana secured there Serie B status with a comfortable two-nil win over relegated Varese. Vicenza finished the season on a high and in third as they beat already promoted Frosinone at the Stadio Menti.

After missing chance after chance after chance it looked as if it was not to be Vicenza’s day when Daniel Ciofani put the visitors ahead on 65 minutes smashing into the roof of the net from a difficult angle. Vicenza fought back though and leveled matters with eight minutes to play, Salvatore Cocco stepping inside two men to drill home.

Two minutes after that Davide Di Gennaro got the winner heading home from six yards out. Finally Bologna overcame Virtus Lanciano. The only goal of the game coming from Ibrahima Mbaye’s speculative effort from distance.

There you have it another Serie B regular season is done and dusted, don’t fret however as there is still more to come in the play-offs, so stay tuned to ItalianFootballDaily to find out what happens,

so as always till next time,

Arrivederci
