After a few weeks of rumors surrounding a Cerci for Torres swap deal, Milan and Atletico Madrid have agreed to a deal that would send Torres back to his boyhood club and Cerci back to Serie A with the Rossoneri.
After Chelsea and Milan agreed to the permanent transfer for Fernando Torres earlier Saturday afternoon, the 30 year old striker will complete his 18 month loan move to Madrid on January 5th, reuniting him with former teammate, now manager, Diego Simeone.
Alessio Cerci, former Torino attacker, will make the move to Milan after receiving a minimal amount of playing time with the reigning La Liga champions. The player will undergo the proper medicals at Milanello and the Madonnina clinic before making the deal 100% official. There are still more details to be finalized here but the move will happen.
Torres, who scored just one goal in 10 Serie A matches, didn’t seem to fit in well since moving over this past summer on a then two-year loan deal from Chelsea. Torres gets to go back home where he became a phenomenal talent. Cerci gets to return to Italy where he played his entire career with several clubs including Roma, Fiorentina and most recently, Torino. Cerci had his best year last season with Torino, netting 13 goals and assisting 10, helping the club gain Europa League qualification.
Cerci, arriving for free on the loan, is another one of Milan’s value moves. Pay little and reap quality results. Players like Diego Lopez and the club’s top scorer, Jeremy Menez, both arrived to the San Siro for free this past summer and have proven to be two of the best value moves in Europe. Cerci will provide Inzaghi with another weapon in the attack that needs some help after the club has received little from players not named Menez or Honda. Plus, Honda will miss some time in January due to Asia Cup duties with Japan so Cerci comes at the right time.
Cerci also allows Inzaghi to be more flexibile with his squad. The 27 year old is a versatile player like Giacomo Bonaventura. Both can be deployed into a few roles without having to lose quality. Cerci could play as a right wing, free roaming attacking midfielder or a traditional center forward. And with a good track record in Serie A, that transitional period should not have an effect on Cerci. He gives Milan a legitimate attacking threat up front with Menez, El Shaarawy or Bonaventura.
Like most of the Milan supporters, I’m very excited about the arrival of Cerci as we look to climb into the top 3 and earn a Champions League spot. However, no hard feelings for Torres. I was always a fan of his and wished him well wherever he went. I hope he can play well for Simeone and be a threat once again. Cerci to Milan and Torres to Atletico Madrid. This mercato should be fun.
