Roma took an important step today on its ambitious plan to build a new, privately funded stadium and further development the surrounding areas with a proposed value of 1.5 billion euros.
According to Roma’s official website, construction is expected to begin by December (pending government approval). The work will take up to two years to complete. President James Pallotta and General Manager Mauro Baldissoni discussed their plans moving forward.
James Pallotta:
“If we are going to consistently compete as a top club in the world we need a new stadium, a stadium that is privately owned by AS Roma. We have a list of potential investors and we feel we won’t have any issue with the financing of the new stadium.”
Mauro Baldissoni:
“I’m very proud to associate Roma to any excellence. I always look at the away fans’ section in our stadium when we chant the Roma song and spread out our scarves right before the game, because I’m proud to see them taking pictures of us. I can imagine how astonished they will be when they take a seat in the new venue and how many pictures they will have to take. I’ve seen Roma fans pushing the players ahead so many times at Stadio Olimpico. I expect to see players lifted by the wave of enthusiasm generated by the fans in the new stadium and fly. They are really excited. They often ask about the status of the project and clearly they would love to play there for Roma.”
The design of the new stadium will be inspired by the Colosseum and seat 52,500 spectators (with option to expand to 60,000 for major matches). As part of the development plan, a new training ground is to be included and some office towers, parks, commercial and entertainment areas.
The cost of the stadium itself is estimated at 300 million euros, the rest of the estimated cost applies to surrounding infrastructure and transport.
If all goes as planned, the stadium is slated to open during the 2017-2018 season.
