Napoli Renewing Attempts for Rog and Zielinksi Transfers

Napoli look to renew attempts to make Marko Rog and Piotr Zielinski their next signings in the summer transfer window.

Napoli were looking at both of these players earlier in the transfer window already, and therefore, the contacts between the clubs have already have been exchanged.

The partenopei previously offered 12 million euros to Dinamo Zagreb for Rog’s services in prior talks, but the club values the Croatian midfielder at 16 million euros, according to Di Marzio. Zagreb seems firm on the evaluation.

Napoli are now trying to close the deal at 13 million euros plus bonuses, which may tempt the Croatian club more than the previous offer.

Piotr Zielinski plays his football at a fellow Serie A club in Udinese. Napoli made contacts for the Polish midfielder earlier in the transfer window and actually came to an agreement with Udinese, but the player rejected the move. Zielinski wanted a move to Liverpool.

The azzurri will attempt to make new progress in the coming days for both Rog and Zielinksi making this week one that can be decisive for both the players and the club.

Liverpool defender shoots down rumors of transfer to Roma

Mamadou Sakho’s agent Niakate Housseyni: “No chance for Roma, he will stay at Liverpool”

Speaking to Laroma24.it, the 26 year old’s agent refuted claims that his client could be on the move to the Serie A side. Rumors spread recently about a possible rift between the French international and Liverpool head coach Jurgen Klopp.

Sakho was one of several rumored replacements for the giallorossi, following the injury of left back Mario Rui.

The Frenchman featured 33 times for the Reds last season. In March, the defender received a 30-day ban from UEFA matches following a failed drug test, which he won the appeal for.

The former PSG defender was purchased by Liverpool in 2013 for €19 million following a 7 year stay with the French capital club.

Manchester United’s Januzaj in Milan’s crosshairs: The details

The Rossoneri eye Januzaj as a low cost reinforcement.

With many new signings for the Red Devils, there will be some departures as well. According to the Daily Mail, the Belgian isn’t in Mourinho’s plans and doesn’t see a future in Manchester.

Januzaj has spoken to the club’s directors and made his stance clear, he doesn’t want a loan deal, he wants to be sold outright. On him are Milan, Fiorentina and Sunderland.

Last weekend, Milan made an approach for the player but due to the lack of funds it seems that they cannot afford to buy him outright. Galliani may try for a loan to buy deal in order to acquire him now and pay the fee later when money arrives.

Roma covet “dream signing” of Manchester United’s Matteo Darmian

Roma look to Manchester United’s Darmian as a potential replacement for Injured Mario Rui.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, the giallorossi has had contact with several teams in search of replacements for their injured left back and see Darmian as a dream fit. The team praised Darmian’s ability to play multiple positions including left back, right back, and possibly even center back.

The team has had contact with Inter over D’Ambrosio, but the nerazzurri are reportedly demanding too high a price for the defender. The team is also apparently looking at Lazaar of Palermo, but stated that the real dream would be to bring Matteo Darmian back to Serie A.

Other players linked to the giallorossi side include Manchester City defender Pablo Zabaleta, and Martin Caceres who is on free transfer from Juventus.

Matteo Darmian joined Manchester United for a rumored £12 million fee in July 2015 and featured 28 times last season for the Red Devils.

Gattuso resigns as Pisa head coach

Following reports of a conflict among the coach and club bosses, Gattuso makes final decision to leave.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, the former A.C. Milan defender, has spoken of leaving the Serie B club over the last few weeks and has now made his decision final. Gatusso was quoted saying “I cannot work with these new, serious, constant and unacceptable problems within this organization.”

The club was recently promoted in June from Lega Pro to Serie B under the coaching of the former Azzurri defender. Gattuso went on to say “It is a very painful choice, more so after the fresh and exciting experience of being promoted to Serie B, but it is a necessary one.”

Gennaro Gattuso took over coaching duties at Pisa in 2015 and in his first season as head coach was able to lead the team to a promotion. This was his third team coached since he began his managing debut in 2013.

Inter want Chelsea’s Oscar to reinforce midfield

The Nerazzurri are looking to bring in a creative player for their midfield.

Another Brazilian for Inter’s midfield? That could be the case, according to Gianluca Di Marzio of SKY.

In the past few hours, the Milanese club have made an inquiry to Chelsea asking for information regarding Oscar. The midfielder born in 1991 suffered a down season last year and is looking to bounce back. Inter hope that his value has also dropped as well.

He possesses a profile that intrigues Inter, but for now there’s no offer, just interest and questions.

Many Italian clubs have taken a liking to Oscar, but Inter is the first to make any actual move.

Sources claim Oscar is worth around €30-35 million in today’s market.

MLS, Why TFC need Giovinco now more than ever

The Atomic Ant has awoken from his slumber at the most crucial time of the MLS season.

What more can be said about Sebastian Giovinco? In his first MLS season the diminutive Italian set an MLS single season record in points with 22 goals and 16 assists en route to being named MLS MVP. He single handedly carried Toronto FC, a franchise known for ineptitude and failure to their first playoff appearance in their history. Giovinco signed a lucrative $7 million per year deal as the team’s top designated player in the winter of 2015 and has been worth every penny since.

Entering his second year Giovinco has been expected to replicate his season with a more balanced squad. In the first half of TFC’s season the Atomic Ant continued his torrid pace with 8 goals in 10 games before going cold during an 8 game streak. Giovinco’s disappointment in not being included in Italy’s EURO 2016 squad has been suggested as a contributing factor to the rare goal drought. Giovinco broke the streak in emphatic fashion scoring a hat-trick against DC United in a 4-1 win, bringing his total to 11 at the time of writing.

In a sports mad city like Toronto, competition for the public’s attention and relevance has proven to be extremely difficult. Toronto Football Club are seen at best as the 4th most important sports franchise in the city behind the Maple Leafs, Blue Jays and Raptors.  Toronto is a “big league” town with the self-entitled notion as the “centre of the universe”. As a native Torontonion I can attest to this. Sports fans in this city have an inferiority complex with the desire to be champions. The current trophy drought is 23 years (1993 Blue Jays).

Touted as one of the best players to ever play in MLS, Giovinco has been tasked at not only being the face of the team but also making MLS reputable in contrast to the bigger leagues in Europe. TFC have 18 games remaining and are in the thick of the Eastern Conference Playoff race. With their history it is imperative for this franchise to not only make the playoffs but to make some noise as well. The Reds need to show that their lone playoff appearance, albeit an embarrassing 3-0 loss to Montreal last year was no fluke.

Giovinco is TFC’s best goal scorer and playmaker. His play over the next two and a half months will make or break the team. On paper TFC should be looking to compete for the MLS Cup, but can only do so with another MVP performance from the Atomic Ant. In order to take the next step as a franchise both on and off the field TFC will need Sebastian Giovinco now more than ever.

AC Milan 0-2 Liverpool – Match Report

Liverpool FC handed AC Milan their first loss in this edition of the International Champions cup by a score of 2-0.

30,000 fans entered the gates of Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California with hopes to experience an exciting match between two teams who have a reputation of always putting on a great show as they did during the 2005 and 2007 editions of the UEFA Champions League Final.

From the moment the referee blew the whistle, it became clear who wanted this match more. Liverpool began to dominate possession and looked to string dangerous through balls with the help of arguably their two best playmakers Philippe Coutinho and newcomer Sadio Mane. As they began to dictate gameplay, they attempted to expose the Milan backline, more specifically their fullbacks Ignazio Abate and Luca Antonelli who often had to watch the ball go over their head and eventually land at the foot of the Liverpool wingers.

20 minutes into the match, Liverpool took control of the ball more and more, forcing Milan to retreat every player to their defensive half, thus allowing Klopp’s men to dominate the match. Former Southampton attacker Sadio Mane began to show his teammates and fans why exactly Liverpool signed him. The Senegalese international began to dictate the flow of the game by instilling his creative skill into the heart of the Liverpool offense, playing extremely dangerous through balls into the path of Philippe Coutinho and Daniel Sturridge who to Milan’s fortune were never able to make something of it.

33 minutes in, Milan was forced to make their first substitution of the match, as Andrea Bertolacci was unable to continue due to an injury. Slovakian international Juraj Kucka replaced him and the Rossoneri’s midfield began to close down spaces with a bit more intensity in an attempt to relieve some of the pressure applied by the Reds.

Milan began to look a bit more alive offensively as Mbaye Niang and Niccolo El Zanellato both attempted to open up the score with long-range shots which caused no threat to Simone Mignolet’s goal.

Liverpool were quick to respond as Adam Lallana saw a cheeky chip attempt land just over Milan’s crossbar. Minutes later, Coutinho found an unmarked Sadio Mane in the box who’s shot was well blocked by Gabriel, keeping things from getting messy.

First half ended on a very low note for Milan who were very lucky not to concede. The midfield often found itself outrun and outplayed by Liverpool’s playmakers. As for the English, it was definitely a bright spot to see such exquisite chemistry between Coutinho and Mane who will surely be creating loads of problem to their opponents this season.

The second half began, and much like the first half, it was Liverpool who dominated possession and began to threaten a Milan defense, which looked a lot more fragile without Romagnoli on the pitch.

At this point, things began to play more and more in Liverpool’s favor mainly because of Divock Origi who would eventually make sure this match went his team’s way and his team’s way only. The Belgian international opened the score sheet in the 59’ minute after beating Gabriel Paletta in an isolation play and firing a potent shot into the bottom left corner of Gabriel’s goal.

Milan were now forced to look for an equalizer and began to push forward with more intensity. To many’s surprise, Ignazio Abate found Niang with an accurate cross to the back post, unfortunately however, the Frenchman’s header was weak and never caused Mignolet any trouble.

The Rossoneri’s poor physical and mental state began to ease things up for Liverpool and the Reds began to look for their second goal via their 19-year-old academy player Sheyi Ojo, who single handedly turned Milan’s defense inside out with his explosiveness and skillful dribbling.

Surely enough it would be through Ojo where Liverpool’s second goal would be fabricated. In the 72nd minute the former Wigan midfielder saw his shot on goal deflected into the path of a sprinting Roberto Firmino who first timed shot into a relatively open goal, thus doubling the lead for Liverpool.

Montella’s men continued to look for some type of spark to ignite their offense, this time through Giacomo Bonaventura who crossed a dangerous ball to Keisuke Honda, who’s header did nothing to trouble the Liverpool goalkeeper, as had been the case for Milan throughout the match.

Liverpool took the deserved victory over their longtime European rivals and celebrated their solid win in front of a large crowd of supporters who passionately sang “You’ll Never Walk Alone” to their players as soon as the last whistle was blown.

Milan will look to bounce back at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis this Wednesday when they take on Antonio Conte’s Chelsea FC in what will be their final match of this edition of the International Champions Cup.

British outfit serious contenders for Mauro Icardi

Premier League giants Arsenal view Inter’s star forward as a perfect fit to their squad.

Mauro Icardi’s name has been thrown around the transfer rumour mill all summer, with things heating up over the last week. Infamous tabloid newspaper the Daily Mail reports that Arsenal are eyeing Icardi as a replacement if their reported deal for Alexandre Lacazzette falls through. Arsenal have been looking for a number 9 for quite some time as Olivier Giroud is not cutting it for the Gunners.

Icardi’s agent and wife Wanda Nara has been flying back and forth from London to Milan fuelling speculation of a move to the Premier League. Maurito’s name has been linked to Napoli, whom Inter have reportedly rejected a 70 million Euro transfer according to Gazzetta Dello Sport. The partenopei  are seeking to replace the large void left by the departure of Gonzalo Higuain to Juventus. Inter management have stressed Icardi is not for sale as he is the centerpiece of the nerazzurri. Arsenal has reportedly offered Inter 60 million Euros.

Napoli are set to meet with Inter next week on a new offer for Icardi. Despite Napoli’s money, Arsenal’s status as a top club in the richest league in the world could prove too much. Icardi is one of the best young strikers in Europe and may see his talents more recognised in the Premier League. Icardi is currently with Inter on their International Champions Cup roster in the United States. Details on a possible move to follow.

Can Juventus Win the Champions League?

Juventus are preparing to once again defend their Serie A title, and possibly aim for more.

Boots are being dusted off, sunburnt legs are being put through murderous cardio sessions and wags are finding themselves left alone with the credit card. It can mean only one thing! Pre-season has begun as we build up for the big kick off.

The Italian top flight Serie A gets under way on the 20th August and defending Champions Juventus look like they already have a firm grip on the trophy before a ball has been kicked.

That’s a bit presumptuous but looking at Juve’s complete dominance of the domestic league you can see where the logic spawns from. In fact they have claimed the title a total of 32 times since its inception in 1898 (that is a staggering 14 more times than AC and Inter) and the last FIVE in a row.

Last season’s closest challengers Napoli, have just had to say cheerio to the league’s deadliest striker, Gonzalo HiguaĂn (a record 36 league goals in the 15/16 season), and guess where he went? You got it, straight into the arms of the Old Lady herself, Juventus.

A reported fee of £78 million may seem excessive, but it has been made achievable by the impending sale of Paul Pogba to Manchester United for a mammoth transfer fee of £105 million (or any similar figure to that mark that we keep seeing being banded around).

The loss of Pogba but gain of HiguaĂn makes Juventus very unpredictable as they eye more than just Italian league success. A strong campaign in the holy grail of domestic football ‘The Champions League’ is a must this season for the faithful Juventus Ultras.

No Italian team has won the Champions League since Jose Mourinho guided Inter to the treble in 2010. However, more depressing for Juve fans is that they have not lifted the coveted European trophy since 1996 (when they defeated Ajax 4-2 on penalties).

So what of their chances to end 20 years of European hurt this season?

Expect the usual suspects, Barcelona, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich to be there or there abouts, but football is similar to a pendulum which hovers over you for a while before deserting you and moving on.

Spain’s dominance of the World and European stage has come to an end after meagre ends to their World Cup and more recently European Championship campaign (ended by Italy no less). So could the pendulum be about to rest over the city of Turin?

They have the squad to do it, on paper there are not many better, although Pogba is a large void, in midfield they still have the likes of Marchisio, Khedira, Pjanic and Asamoah. That is a line up to send even the most seasoned pro into a breakdown not seen since they last saw their credit card bill.

Add to the mix HiguaĂn’s goals and a defence including the likes of Chiellini and Evra and all of a sudden Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri has a squad capable of beating anyone, not just on their day but on the odd off day too.

There is a feeling of stubbornness about this team and a feeling that they are due a European Crown.

The Old Lady is impatient and making her move to conquer Europe.

Parma sign Davide Mastaj

It is a long road back to the top for Parma but so far so good for the Ducali. Yet there is still much to do and the clubs knows that if they are going to get where they want to be then they will have to have some young talent to rely on in the near future.

On such player who could be that exciting young talent is Davide Mastaj, who officially became a Parma player today with the news being announced through the clubs website. Mastaj, who is an attacker born in 1998, joins from Eccellenza club Colorno who are from the village of the same name which is only a 30 minute drive outside of Parma.

Mastaj proves quite a significant capture for the Crociati as in the recent past he has attracted the interest of both Sassuolo and English club Norwich

Francesco Tavano heading to Padova

Once renowned for terrorising Serie A and B defences alike, Francesco Tavano now looks set to be joining Lega Pro side Padova.

Now a sprightly 37 years of age, the veteran hitman spent last season with the Lupi of Avellino in Serie B where he found the net four times in 24 appearances. Best known for his time at Empoli where he scored 118 goals in just over 300 appearances, Tavano is set to join the club where Alessandro Del Piero started his career.

Tuttomercatoweb are reporting the words of Avellino President Walter Taccone, “My son Massimilano (General Manager) has reached a tentative agreement with the players agent that will allow him to join Padova. The last word is up to him.”

Tavano should prove a shrewd purchase for Padova who will be looking to put his skill and experience to use as they go in search of promotion to Serie B

Allegri praises his men after win over South China

The Bianconeri boss spoke to the media following his side’s 2-1 win in Hong Kong.

Medhi Benatia and Lorenzo Rosseti scored the goals for Juventus in today’s friendly victory. Allegri used 22 players in today’s game to test out different formations and give his youth a chance to shine – a rarity in Italian football.

“Today was a good test. These were completely different conditions to our matches in Melbourne. It wasn’t easy playing in this temperature, but the boys dug deep.

“We’ve now ended the first part of our pre-season preparations without suffering any injuries, which is a good sign. Now we’re looking forward to regrouping on Tuesday, which will well and truly mark the start of our season.

“This will be an important campaign like every other for this club, because we always aim at achieving all of our objectives. We’ve five new players to bed in to the side, who all have different attributes.

“We need to show the necessary drive, but also humility, from the off, as we can’t take anything for granted. We paid the price for that during the first two months last term. We’re determined to make sure that doesn’t happen again this time around.

“It’s important that we put in good groundwork early on so that we can get to March and still be in contention on all three fronts: the Serie A, Champions League and Coppa Italia.”

Verratti: “Thanks Real Madrid, but I want to win with PSG”

The PSG midfielder has declined a move to the Spanish capital.

The rumor:

Real Madrid want Marco Verratti at all costs, and with the looming departure of Toni Kroos, Zinedine Zidane has drawn parallels between the German and the Italian.

According to Sport, Florentino Perez has offered €50 million cash to PSG for the Italian jewel, but alas PSG have rejected the bid. They consider him a fundamental piece of the club’s plans for the future and have recently extended his contract until 2020.

Juventus and Barcelona had recently taken a look at the Italy midfielder. The Bianconeri even conducted a survey with the impending loss of Paul Pogba.

Milan and Arsenal set to battle for Valencia defender

The two clubs are set to duel for one of Germany’s brightest young defenders.

He already has experience in Serie A with Sampdoria, but Shkodran Mustafi may not be done with Italy just yet.

According to Sky Sports Germany, the Gunners are preparing a €28 million offer to convince Valencia to sell. However, the Spaniards have placed a €45 million release clause in order to let the centerback go.

Milan have recently been asking for a loan to buy option, as the cash-strapped Italian side desperately seek reinforcements for the depleted squad.

Alex and Phillipe Mexes left the squad in the summer as their contracts expired. Although it is a big relief to the balance sheet, the financial and ownership crisis of the club have reportedly left them with less than €10 million cash to spend.

Chelsea target Candreva skips medical, likely to sign with Inter

Antonio Candreva wasn’t present at the Lazio camp for his medical today.

As Italy’s Euro 2016 contingency continues to return to their club training camps, Antonio Candreva skipped out on a scheduled appointment at the Paideia Clinc today.

Inter had reportedly agreed to a deal to see Candreva trade in his Lazio blue colors for Inter’s Nerazzurri. The parties had agreed on personal terms sometime this week.

Today indicates that he is very close to making the €25 million switch to the north, and continue his journeyman adventure throughout Italy.

Candreva has played for Udinese, Juventus, Cesena, Parma and Livorno in Italy.

Next: Lazio and three other Serie A clubs have a defender linked with Chelsea. Find out who, here.

Villarreal to sign Sampdoria’s Roberto Soriano

The coastal Spanish club is set to bring in Soriano in the coming days.

Everybody has a price, and for Roberto Soriano, that appears to be €15 million. We all remember the grand debacle Napoli suffered in January where they didn’t deposit the contract in time to sign the midfielder. Now, it seems that they will again miss out on the Italy man.

The Blucerchiati are currently defining the details to sell Soriano to Villarreal outright. The release clause for Soriano is €15 million, but the Spaniards have put €14 million on the table. Their Sporting Director Osti is outlining the last few details before the deal is made official early next week, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport.

Sampdoria are looking to bring in one of three young midfielders to replace him.

Valerio Verre from Pescara, Praet from Anderlecht and Udinese’s Bruno Fernandes are all options on the table for Sampdoria. The audition period is open.

Talking Points: Dybala and Pjanic shine in Juventus win over South China

The Bianconeri looked sharp in their 2-1 over Hong Kong’s South China FC.

As Juventus close their tour in the Far East, it’s worth noting that going from the Australian winter to a hot, humid climate like Hong Kong is not an easy task in the span of a week.

However, the club will now travel back to Italy to link up with their Euro 2016 contingency who are just returning from their summer break. Allegri took to Asia a team of Primavera, fringe and first team players, and will consider their adventure a success.

Against South China FC, the 2-1 scoreline doesn’t do justice to the team’s performance.

Venezia, Filippo Inzaghi: ”All Three Of Our Strikers Were Missing At The Same Time”

The former Milan bench boss discusses his squad’s form and training experience as they concluded another friendly match-up.

Following their pre-season friendly against Serie D side S.S.D. Jesina, Venezia manager Filippo Inzaghi spoke to the media post-game about the current physical condition of his squad, as per TuttoLegaPro:

It is incredible to think, despite having three center-forwards on the roster, we can be without all three, Geijo, Virdis and Ferrari, simultaneously, but it is better that it happens now rather than when the games really count. We had a tough week, we worked a lot on the athletic profile and it is clear that fatigue is being felt.

Against Jesina, I put Basso and Tortori in the false nine role but I certainly did not put them in the best conditions to make the most of it. We will continue to work. At this moment, results mean little to me.

The Blues continue their hunt for a new center back, three have made the shortlist.

Per reports in Italy and England, four central defenders are on Antonio Conte’s radar as the club seeks to challenge for the title and Champions League qualification next season.

With an aging John Terry, a less than exceptional Gary Cahill, and an Italian coach who knows all too well the power Serie A defenders possess, it’s worth taking a look at these players as possible concrete additions to Chelsea.

Next: Kalidou Koulibaly

Napoli close the deal for Amadou Diawara, beating Roma and Bayern Munich

The Partenopei have sealed the deal for the Guinean playmaker.

Diawara is heading to Napoli, the talks have almost been concluded, according to Il Mattino this morning. Roma had long been linked with the player especially since he didn’t show up for Bologna’s preseason training.

The Bologna youngster will cost the Azzurri around €16 million and he will sign a 4-year deal worth €1 million net per season.

Bologna have also given the go-ahead for him to sign the deal with the club and will most likely make his move to the south very soon.

Betis Interested in Lemina: Juventus Slap 20 Million Euro Price Tag On Him

Real Betis are said to be interested in Juventus’ Mario Lemina but have been scared away by the bianconeri’s valuation of the player.

According to Il Desmarque, a local paper in Sevilla, Juventus aren’t keen on selling Mario Lemina anymore. Real Betis asked the Italian champions about the player’s availability and they answered with a 20 million euro valuation. Juventus recently bought the midfielder for 11 million euros. Betis reportedly can’t afford to match that request and are now out of the race for the player.

Lemina has impressed this pre-season and Juventus have since deemed him unsellable and off the transfer list. However, it remains to be seen what Juventus would do should a club meet their valuation of the player.

Juventus Reach Agreement With Gabigol But Not With Doyen

Despite signing Napoli’s Gonzalo Higuain, Juventus seem keen on adding Santos’ Gabigol to their attacking ranks.

According to Sky Sport, Juventus are heavily pursuing Gabigol and have reached an agreement with him and his father for a contract. The deal is reportedly four or five years valued at 2.5 million euros per season plus bonuses that can be reached with appearances and goals. This however doesn’t mean a deal is done for the player as Juventus have to now reach an agreement with the player’s family and Doyen, who own 40% and 20% of his rights respectively. Santos, on the other hand, have already accepted the bianconeri’s offer between 18 and 20 million euros for the remaining 40% of his rights.

After signing Higuain from Napoli, it seems Juventus have no intentions of slowing down in the transfer market. At the moment, they have set their sights on signing yet another striker like Gabigol and potentially another midfielder depending how the Pogba saga unfolds.

Axel Witsel to replace Manchester United bound Pogba?

Three major stories today involving Juventus and their transfer window moves.

Axel Witsel is one of the big options for the Bianconeri midfield if/when Paul Pogba departs for Manchester United. Witsel, who has publicly stated his desire to leave the Russian Premier League for either the Barclays PL or Serie A.

According to Gianluca Di Marzio, their first offer to Zenit for Witsel proved to be too low, around €18-20 million. At the moment, Everton have the advantage over Juventus and want to see their deal closed shortly. Zenit favors the Toffee’s offer at the moment as they are bidding around €30 million. Witsel, however know that Juventus want him, and is taking his time before saying yes to the English.

Analysis: Is Mauro Icardi the right man to replace Higuain?

The domino effect is very much real in Serie A right now, with Juventus buying Higuain (possibly Pogba was the first domino?), Napoli had some new found riches in which they had to find a replacement striker.

Napoli have had jackpot after jackpot with strikers since their resurgence, Cavani moved from Palermo in 2010 and left for the French capital with 104 goals in 138 games. Then Napoli re-invested the Cavani money in Real Madrid’s Gonzalo Higuain, and he’s set to move to Turin with 91 goals in 146 games, with Napoli tripling their money for him.

Mauro Icardi evidently no Gonzalo Higuain, he may have outscored the Turin-bound Higuain in 2014/15, but Higuain’s recording break 2015/16 has left Icardi in the theoretical dust. But is this still a good fit for Napoli and Icardi?

Comparing Higuain and Icardi

Gonzalo Higuain – Serie A career

f67678c3bb71d622439d6f14f8dcec4e

Mauro Icardi – Serie A career

ee57f27b9a944a39b716c6c3bbe843c1

(note: OPTA only started tracking ‘big chances’ in Serie last season)

Surprisingly, these actually look quite comparable. Now these are face value statistics, and conversion rates can be a pretty shoddy way to assess striking ability, but it gives you at least some image.

What sticks out to me re:Higuain is that his conversion rate has been pretty steady throughout his Serie A career, there was a bit of a dip during 2014/15, but that’s so many variables that could have caused that.

The thing that should stick out from the Higuain table is how his shot numbers skyrocketed when Sarri came in. In my opinion, the Italian is one of the top innovators in world football right now. He completely revolutionised Napoli’s system through a bigger emphasis on positional play, overloads and switches. Benitez’s pragmatic football left no legacy whatsoever in Naples.

Through Sarri improving Napoli offensively almost beyond recognition, it created an extra two shots almost for Higuain, which is huge. You can see it through his non-penalty goals per 90 numbers. More on how this links to Icardi later on.

Icardi definitely overperformed for 2015/16, theres’ no doubt in my mind. A 28% conversion rate is absolutely insane and as is a 60% big chance conversion rate (for reference, the average conversion rate is 40%). Icardi’s scoring career is quite hard to assess from these numbers, you can get a rough idea of what could be his career conversion rate (18-20%, pretty good).

CikgEKXWgAAdmDX

Here’s something for people who prefer more advanced analytics (myself included). I’m quite impressed by Icardi’s numbers, especially considering the absolute graveyard of a team he played. Inter’s midfield trivote of Kondogbia, Medel and Brozovic was completely uninspiring at almost all times during the season. I wasn’t a fan of Ljajic or Perisic on the wings, either. It’s so important to add context to stats, and the context here is that Inter played in a defensively minded team that was pretty pathetic from a creative standpoint.

Icardi in Napoli’s team

If you’d like something about Higuain in Juventus’ team, I wrote about that here.

Anyways, onto Icardi. Okay so we’ve established Icardi is a pretty good goalscorer, but it’s important to see how the fit is in terms of Napoli’s playstyle and Icardi’s playstyle.

Like I said, Sarri is one of the top offensive innovators in the game, he completely revamped Napoli with almost the same team that Benitez had at his disposal. What struck me about Napoli last season was their offensive flexibility. They were first for shots from counter attacking situations (144, 17 ahead of 2nd place Milan) and also first for shots from possession situations (101, 26 ahead of 2nd place Fiorentina).

So we’ve established Napoli are two dimensional in their attacks, but does Icardi need to be? Well, it’d certainly help. Higuain had 0.8 shots/90 from counter attacking situations (5.5 shots/90 in total), whereas Icardi had a measly 0.09 shots/90 (2/90 in total).

However, this is why it’s so hard to evaluate how a player will do in a new team. Inter had 118 shots from counter attacking situations (7th most in the league) and 62 from possession situations (5th most). But there’s just still a huge gap in the difference between Napoli and Inter’s shot volume.

Mauro Icardi had 0.2 shots/90 from counter attacking situaitons. It’s clearly lower than Higuain’s total, but then you have to consider Higuain was playing in a team that was set up to attack so much more efficiently than Inter were.

Will Icardi’s playstyle transfer over to Napoli? I say yes, but not all of it. I think he does struggle in counter attacking situations, especially when he receives the ball and has to bring others into the game.

However, Napoli are still an open play orientated team (open play ≠ possession situations) and Icardi does well in such situations. His shot numbers are low but I believe in a team that creates as many shots for their main striker as Napoli do, his goal scoring numbers will go up, but definitely not to 2015/16 Higuain levels.

So, is it a good signing?

I think yes. There are other clubs where I think Icardi would not have fit in well (I.E Arsenal), but Napoli is a great landing spot.

I’ve had an odd hunch that Sarri has been wanting to move to a two striker formation, even when those within Napoli thought Higuain was staying, Sarri was looking at first team strikers.

The Milik transfer looks all but done and I think Icardi – Milik is a great combination. You don’t see many supporting strikers nowadays with the absence of two striker formations but Milik looks to me like a supporting striker. He has the right associative play traits that Icardi lacks and I think putting him next to a poacher like Icardi can only do the both of them good.

So, in conclusion. Icardi’s scoring numbers are pretty good for someone who’s 23 and played in an absolute graveyard of a team from a creative sense. In the past, more shots hasn’t always equalled more goals for Icardi, but the problem with pure shot numbers is that it’s hard to evaluate the quality of these shots (will someone please make expected goals data public?).

Ajax, Napoli among the possible suitors for Balotelli

Despite a poor loan spell with AC Milan last year, striker Mario Balotelli is still garnering interest across Europe.

Mario Balotelli’s options have become limited. After a failed season back with the Rossoneri, Liverpool no longer wish to keep the striker. Despite all, the Italian is still in demand for a few clubs.

According to Gianluca Di Marzio, Balotelli’s representatives led by Mino Raiola have spoken to Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis over a possible move. Since Milik is set to join the club and Napoli seek other reinforcements to replace Higuain, it’s unlikely that Balotelli lands in Naples.

Milik’s former club Ajax is said to be a legitimate option for the former Inter man contingent on the Dutch side advancing through in the Champions League over PAOK FC.

Two other clubs have made contacts for Balotelli, Pescara and Besiktas. Mario, while being fond of Oddo, were rejected and the Turkish club is unlikely to get a deal done.

The Mario Balotelli saga could be one that lasts the rest of the summer as Raiola will have to pitch his client to clubs and sell them on taking his wages after a string of lackluster campaigns.

Napoli Seek Defensive Reinforcement In Maksimovic

Torino center-half Nikola Maksimovic is being heavily courted by the Partenopei.

Napoli have been very busy in the transfer market recently as they look to tie up the transfers of Milik from Ajax, and Diawara from Bologna respectfully.

The Azzurri are seeking to bring in Torino defender Nikola Maksimovic, and have already seen an 18 million euro +Valdifiori bid rejected. Gianluca Di Marzio is now claiming that Napoli have thus improved their bid to 22 million euros for the defender and are confident that they will be able to attain the player.

In regards to Valdifiori that deal will likely be conducted separately and his departure would clearly open up more room for Diawara if the transfer is completed. Valdifiori has been reported as wanting to look for pastures new so would not reject a move to Torino if it were to happen.

Napoli Target Bologna Star Diawara

With the sale of Gonzalo Higuain, Napoli are looking to use those funds to bolster their already impressive squad.

As such Napoli have identified numerous targets from various sources including Italy to do just that. According to Gianluca Di Marzio, Aurelio De Laurentiis is looking to tie up the deal to bring in Milik from Ajax and conversely they are now targeting Bologna’s Amadou Diawara.

Napoli are looking to submit a bid in the region of 17-18 million euros to convince Bologna to part ways with their prized asset. The player is also being courted by Roma, who have offered 12 million euros plus the full ownership of Sadiq.

Diawara has been looking to force through a move away, and if Bologna do accept Napoli’s offer then they will be making a large profit on the 19 year old who only cost the club 420,000 euros.

Sassuolo draw in first European match: The recap

The Neroverdi tied 1-1 in their first ever European match against FC Luzern.

Sassuolo played FC Luzern in their European debut in Switzerland. Although their path to the Europa League group stage may seem a bit arduous, tonight’s result will definitely buoy them forward. Eusebio Di Francesco’s side have traveled a long way to get where they are today. The directors of the club have put something truly special together in terms of their organization and roster.

Tonight’s draw has a major benefit to their attempt to make it to the playoff round. Domenico Berardi’s 42nd minute equalizer from the spot canceled out Schnewly’s 8th minute goal. A pretty nervy start was conquered and the Italians will take back a slight advantage to the MAPEI Stadium.

Outside of Domenico Berardi, Andrea Consigli played an excellent game in part by making numerous saves. Especially the second half miracle stop against Neumayr from about 12 yards out.

After the match, Andrea Consigli spoke in the mixed zone: “I hope the penalty goal will be decisive in sending us through to the next round.”

Di Francesco wasn’t exactly thrilled with the result, but satisfied: “I would’ve liked to have taken home a victory, but this is good enough.”

Finale allo #Swissporarena: #LuzernSassuolo 1-1 (8′ Schneuwly, 41′ rig. Berardi) #ForzaSasol #UEL http://pic.twitter.com/Ymr6Vr2GYE

Napoli, Milik completes medical visit before signing

Higuain out, Milik in for the Azzurri.

The Poland international arrived this afternoon in Rome and went directly to the Villa Stuart clinic to undergo his medical visit before joining the club.

Shortly ago, Arkadiusz Milik emerged from the clinic without saying anything to the media and driving off into the Roman night.

Ajax on the other hand have pulled off a massive financial coup. They purchased the striker from Bayer Leverkusen for only €3 million and have sold him for reportedly €35 million. A major €32 million profit in just about a year’s time.

Milik scored 24 goals in all competitions last season and played a part in Poland’s Euro 2016 run.

Milan Ultras protest against club at Berlusconi’s Villa

Earlier today, 200 fans from Milan’s Curva Sud travelled to Silvio Berlusconi’s villa in Arcore to protest about the clubs current state and lack of movement in the transfer market.

The Curva Sud is fed up. Known as being nuts, they certainly have a right to be in this situation. With the Chinese preliminary agreement delayed, the Rossoneri’s transfer market is reportedly “blocked.” The only signing of the summer came at the end of June as Pescara’s Gianluca Lapadula was brought in.

Today the Curva held up many signs, a big one which said in Italian, “Ora Basta” meaning “enough” and many small signs against Galliani, and demanding clarity and respect to Milan’s fanbase.

The Curva was also chanting “We want our Milan back” multiple times, before Berlusconi agreed to meet with one of the delegates from the Curva.

The meeting lasted about 30 minutes and the protest then ended, as Milanisti hope to see answers in the transfer market very soon.

Napoli close to signing Marco Sportiello

The 24-year-old Atalanta goalkeeper has been on Napoli’s radar ever since last season’s January transfer window.

According to Gazzettamercato, Marco Sportiello’s move to Napoli is imminent.  Napoli president, Aurelio De Laurentiis, reportedly would like to close the deal with Atalanta before the First of August.

Napoli will close the deal by offering Atalanta €6million +  Napoli goalkeeper Luigi Sepe.  Sepe would be essentially a straight swap for Atalanta in terms of his age and experience within he Serie A, as Sepe has already played for the likes of Empoli and Fiorentina.

As for Marco Sportiello, Napoli are willing to offer him a 5-year contract worth up to €800k a year.  Marco Sportiello’s move to Napoli would provide the partenopei much needed depth at the goalkeeper position as they have an aging Pepe Reina and a very shaky Rafael Cabral.  Sportiello could provide the serenity needed within the Napoli camp at the goalkeeper position.

Pogba to Manchester United: The economic details

Pogba to Manchester United will break multiple records should the deal be completed.

First things first, Juventus who acquired Pogba on a free transfer will pull the biggest profit on a player in the history of football. That record will be shattered if the €110 million base fee goes through.

When the official announcements are released, much more will become clearer regarding actual fees and the payment structure. The net figure for Juventus will be €110 million, plus Manchester United handling the commission fee to Mino Raiola, which would be about 19% on top of the base fee.

Raiola will make approximately €25 million on the deal, and Pogba will earn a little over €1.10 million directly from the transfer. In the contract Pogba is allowed 1% of the transfer fee.

The transfer could be completed today, multiple sources in Italy and the UK are pointing towards Pogba undergoing a medical visit in Miami.

Pogba’s contract is rumored to be a 5-year deal worth €13 million net per season.

El Shaarawy: “Juve motivate us to win every game to stay at their pace.”

In an interview with El Shaarawy the player discusses the club, his career, Juve and Paredes.

While on tour in America, the Roma striker gave an interview Roma Radio.

On himself and his career and Roma.

“I am very happy to be a giallorossi player. For me it is a major challenge when I began in January. I am very satisfied and enthusiastic here. We are training well and I am happy to have found companions here. It’s taken a little time for me to find my best form and I never imagined I’d come to Roma. After Monaco came this proposal and I was impressed, I couldn’t refuse it, and I made an effort for the team, giving my contribution. I feel I can still give something extra to the team and for myself.

On Juventus.

“Do I think Juve are Champions League ready? I think that Juve is, in this time, a step above all the other teams in the league, using the market to get world-class players. We must try to win every game, knowing that we have Juventus up front and we need to stay at their pace.

On Paredes.

“Paredes has impressed me a lot these days with his quality and touch of the ball.”

The 23 year old Italian international joined Roma on loan last season from Milan. On June 21st 2016, the giallorossi triggered the buy-out clause on the loan deal for €13 million making El Shaarawy a permanent member of the team.

Chelsea press Napoli for Kalidou Koulibaly: The details

After offloading Gonzalo Higuain, Kalidou Koulibaly is the next to head for the exit door.

Napoli’s team is taking some heavy losses this summer, without properly reinforcing them. Kalidou Koulibaly, who’s been linked with a switch to the Blues for weeks is seemingly nearing a done deal.

Antonio Conte’s side have scoured Serie A for proper defensive replacements, outlining Koulibaly, Maksimovic and De Vrij as possible solutions.

Koulibaly’s statements earlier in the month indicated that he wouldn’t resign and would rather leave Napoli. Since then, teams have taken notice and should the right offer arrive, he’d take it.

But Napoli aren’t a “selling club”. If you want one of their best, you’re going to have to pay top cash to get them.

According to the Sun, Chelsea is all ready to submit the bid Napoli have requested. They’re willing to pay €45 million for the Senegalese defender, which is the price outlined by president De Laurentiis.

Lorenzo Tonelli was brought in from Empoli on July 1st, but Napoli will need another defender should they wish to compete in the league and Champions League.

Milan, Bordeaux agree to terms for Menez transfer

The Rossoneri are set to offload another striker this summer.

As Milan’s situation continues to reach unparalleled lows, Jeremy Menez is seemingly the next player on the list to depart the Milanese side.

Bordeaux has been interested for the past few weeks in Menez and finally according to Sky Sport, the two clubs have come to an agreement. The French forward will return to his homeland and play in Ligue 1 this upcoming season.

On Monday, Menez underwent the medical visit in order to join his new club. After two seasons with the Rossoneri, he’s heading back to France where he’s already played for PSG, Monaco and Sochaux.

Financial details have not yet been released.

Juve Stabia Set To Renew Contract Of Their Striker After Six-Month Stint

All it took was six months for the newly-acquired striker to convince the GialloblĂș to keep him at the club for the foreseeable future.

Pavia’s loss ended up being a key gain for Juve Stabia. As per TuttoLegaPro, striker Stefano Del Sante will sign a two-year contract that will keep him in the city of Castellammare di Stabia until June 2018. The 29-year old Perugia native spent the first half of last season with Pavia, finding the back of the net only once in seven games. He had signed with the club on a free transfer in July of 2015 from Vigor Lamezia.

In the January transfer window, Pavia sold Del Sante to Juve Stabia where his performances were enough to impress the club to offer him the soon to be official, contract extension. In 14 games for Stabia, he scored three goals and collected one assist.

Rieti Lega Pro application rejected

There might still be plenty of spaces to be filled in Lega Pro for the 2016/17 season but as of today we know that one of those spots will not be filled by Rieti Calcio.

The club, who are based in the Lazio region of the country, finished fourth in Serie D Group G last season and where hoping to be one of the lucky few pluck from the division after a spate of financial failures amongst other clubs.

However Tuttomercatoweb is reporting that the Amarantocelesti have been denied a place in Lega Pro as their application form has been found to be incomplete, with the club not matching up to the financial requirements needed to compete in the division.

This is the second year in a row that the club has been unsuccessful in its application to join Lega Pro.

Paganese close to Lega Pro reprieve

To say it has been a turbulent summer for Lega Pro would be an understatement as the league and its clubs have been beset with financial problems. With the season only weeks away the division is still some way short of filling its preset quota of 60 teams for the 2016/17 campaign.

However the number of clubs who are set to take part in the new season looks for now at least as if it has been boosted by one. Having initial been denied their place in the league it looks as if the southern club Paganese will indeed be allowed to compete in Lega Pro this year.

Like so many at this level the club are struggling financially and because of this were denied a Lega Pro licence. Now though Tuttomercatoweb is reporting that the Azzurrostellato have come to an arrangement with the Inland Revenue over a tax dispute and will quickly appeal the decision to expel them from Lega Pro, with a positive outcome likely.

Juventus look to Herrera as potential Pogba replacement

According to Premium Sport, Hector Herrera is now being linked to Scudetto champions Juventus.

The Porto midfielder was supposedly close to a move to Napoli before rejecting their offer and pulling out of the deal.

Due to the long running saga surrounding Paul Pogba and whether he will leave or stay, Juventus have scouted the market to look for ideal replacements. Nemanja Matic of Chelsea is considered the number one target to replace the French international, but if that move fails then Herrera is looked at as a back up.

Juventus have an excellent rapport with the Portuguese heavyweights due to the deal to bring Alex Sandro to the club and thus the transfer would be a smooth transaction.

Jovetic May be Alternative to Icardi for Napoli

Napoli look to Inter not only for Mauro Icardi, but also consider Stevan Jovetic in their hunt for a new striker, according to Sportitalia.

Gonzalo Higuain made his move to Juventus and many different names at the striker position have come up for the Partenopei in his replacement.

Jovetic currently plays at Inter after coming from Manchester City, and Sportitalia reports that Napoli may be considering the Montenegrin. This would be as an alternative to Icardi whom seems unlikely to move at the moment.

Jovetic competed in the Serie A before moving abroad and has proven that he can score goals in the league and be a threat to opposing teams. However, injuries have stopped him from returning to consistent production.

There is speculation that Napoli may even be looking for two strikers in an attempt at a new two-striker formation. Stevan Jovetic being one of those strikers is premature, but he may be a distant possibility.

Transfer Talk: Pogba inches closer to Manchester United, Verratti to Real Madrid?

Two hot topic stories are discussed regarding Paul Pogba and Marco Verratti.

Serie A’s most marketable player, Paul Pogba has been linked with a move to Manchester United in recent weeks. Unless you’ve had your head buried in the sand or been on holiday on an island in the middle of nowhere, you know that this story has been the talk of the summer.

Last week it was reported, then soon after denied that a deal had been struck. Juve’s Sporting Director publicly dismissed that a deal had been defined, perhaps waiting to see what lurking Real Madrid would do. As of now, it’s reportedly a “matter of hours” by several journalists in Italy.

But perhaps the biggest clue regarding Pogba’s future came from a Tweet he published this afternoon with a little red cap on, leaving a hotel.

En route 66 👊🏿 route 66 #holidays#route66http://pic.twitter.com/VwB5WzEedR

— Paul Pogba (@paulpogba) July 27, 2016

Juventus have reportedly been offered a deal they deem acceptable, Manchester United will pay Juventus €110 million + take on Mino Raiola’s commission fee. Which could round the total price close to €130 million. A total record smashing affair on multiple fronts.

Marco Verratti to Real Madrid?

This deal is contingent on whether or note Toni Kroos leaves the Spanish capital. Real Madrid had been offered around €70-75 million by Manchester City for the Germany international. In a move that will seemingly copy their crosstown rivals Manchester United, Kroos would be used to drastically reinforce the center of the park for the Citizens.

Marco Verratti, was recently praised by Zinedine Zidane, the Real Madrid coach who’s currently guiding his team on their US Tour. The two sides actually played each other tonight in Ohio but neither player featured. Verratti is supposedly recovering from fitness concerns, which could very well be the case.

French newspaper L’Equipe reported that Verratti had been performing very well in training up to this point, however. PSG had reportedly rejected Real Madrid’s first offer of €50 million cash for the Italian. It seems that the Pescara born midfielder will be the key piece of the Emery puzzle this season.

As with all contingent deals, there’s multiple moving parts that need to align in order for it to come full circle. With the transfer window still open for more than a month, a lot can happen.

Chelsea identify Torino’s Nikola Maksimovic as ideal defensive upgrade

It has recently emerged that Chelsea have identified suitable alternatives to key defensive target Koulibaly.

The Napoli and Senegal international is considered too pricey for the former EPL champions. Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis continues to ask for the highest amount possible for one of his prized assets.

Di Marzio however claims that one of the alternatives being considered by Chelsea is Nicola Maksimovic of Torino instead.

The Serbian is highly rated and would come as suitably cheaper option as opposed to Koulibaly.

Ironically, Maksimovic had long been linked with a switch to Napoli, but has now appeared on the radar of Antonio Conte’s side.

Torino have already offloaded Kamil Glik to Monaco and will not sell Maksimovic at a discounted price and certainly not to a cash rich Premier League side.

Giovinco keeps door open for Azzurri call from Ventura

Toronto FC’s star man Sebastian Giovinco was excluded from Antonio Conte’s Azzurri squad this past summer for Euro 2016. Despite the non-call, the reigning MLS MVP has left the door open for a return.

Speaking to ESPN FC, Sebastian Giovinco weighed in on not being called for the trip to France:

“It would have been amazing to go to Euros. It would have been the cherry on the pie, but I’m happy with the way I’m playing and what I’m doing.”

The former Juventus and Parma striker, despite being overlooked by Conte, has left the door open for a call up by new boss Giampiero Ventura:

“I haven’t had the opportunity to talk to him [Ventura] but like I’ve always said, I’m available to play for the national team. But no, I haven’t spoken to him.”

Juventus, Pereyra and Isla to leave, West Ham and Watford interested: The latest

Juventus need to sell, and the first two to leave are ex-Udinese players.

After purchasing Gonzalo Higuain for a record fee, Juventus now need to offload some players to re-balance the budget. Two South American players are set to depart the club, according to Sky Sport’s Gianluca Di Marzio.

For the Argentina international Pereyra, West Ham continue to press forward. The London club has long been infatuated with the number 37’s profile and thinks he could couple well with Dimitri Payet.

For Isla, Watford are attempting to swoop in for him. After an impressive Copa America performance, Pozzo’s Watford believe that he can still make a big impact in a major league.

Ironically, Isla was signed by Pozzo’s Udinese, and now he could move to the president’s English side.

But the Chilean has other suitors, in the form of Cagliari. He and his agent will meet up with the Sardinian’s representatives before making a decision.

Juventus look to shed some excess weight before the start of the season, Pereyra and Isla will be the first sacrifices.

Lazio reach agreement with Newcastle for Thauvin: The details

The Biancoceleste have already found their replacement for Antonio Candreva.

Times are tough right now for Lazio, who’ve endured a very difficult summer revolving around the falling out of Marcelo Bielsa’s shocking exit. The Argentina coach demanded 4 signings before he even stepped foot in Rome, and to say the least, that was not going to happen.

Antonio Candreva is now the latest man who is preparing to leave Rome, and is just a step away from signing with Inter. But ironically, Lazio are turning to a Bielsa pupil to replace Candreva, Florian Thauvin.

The former Marseille and current Newcastle player has been linked with Lazio in recent weeks and would be the ideal Candreva replacement.

According to Mediaset, Lazio has reached an agreement with Newcastle for a loan to buy deal for the right winger. The loan will cost an upfront fee of €2 million and €10-12 million for the buyout.

Newcastle, who will play in the English second tier, have already offloaded several players this summer.

Thauvin was purchased by Newcastle in 2014, but was loaned back to Marseille for last season.

Fondi The Latest Serie D Club To Be Admitted Into Lega Pro

The Girone H Playoff winners end a six-year hiatus and rejoin the ranks of professional football after being approved for promotion.

The Lega Pro Council today announced that Unicusano Fondi Calcio, commonly known as Fondi, will take part in the 2016/2017 Lega Pro, as per TuttoLegaPro. The club finished 5th in Girone H last season but made it to the Playoff Final, knocking off Francavilla 1-0 thus earning them a spot on the draft list.

Although Fondi can now begin their celebrations, other clubs are still hanging in the balance regarding whether or not they will be given the thumbs up to climb the ladder. Cavese, Girone I Playoff winners, must wait for Covisoc’s decision to determine their fate for next season. As for Monza, their case is a bit more difficult due to sitting at the bottom of the draft list. For the Biancorossi to have fulfill their dream promotion, they will have to hope the club above them on the list pulls out or that Paganese’s appeal against bankruptcy is not approved.

Reggiana To Play Coppa Italia Opener Away Due To Stadium Issues

Field renovations force Reggiana to play their opening round Coppa Italia game away from home against FeralpiSalo.

Reggiana are set to play their Coppa Italia First Round game against FeralpiSalo and were scheduled to host the game on home turf but those plans have been thrown out the window. Mapei Stadium, also home to Serie A side Sassuolo, is currently undergoing renovations therefore no events can be held at the grounds for the time being, as per TuttoMercatoWeb.

In an interview on Reggiana’s official website, the club’s Director General Maurizio Franzone laments the lack of alternatives and knows it is out of the club’s control for the change of venues:

I understand the mood of our fans and Reggiana citizens. Unfortunately, Mapei Stadium would not be fit to use on Sunday July 31st. The renovations at the stadium would not permit the fans to benefit from a sporting event such as this football game and our primary objective is that our supporters always have the opportunity to enjoy watching Reggiana under the best possible conditions. We have analyzed all viable solutions. However, both from a structural point of view and regulatory point of view, there were no sustainable alternatives.

Fano Gain Entry To Lega Pro At Lecco’s Expense

The Marche-based club earn a free ride into Lega Pro following Lecco’s failure to provide the required documents for admission.

Days ago, Lecco were saying their prayers and crossing their fingers in hope that they would be plucked from Serie D and moved into Lega Pro after pursuing admission to the third tier. Today, tears of disappointment instead of joy are rolling down the faces of the Lecco faithful as the club failed to submit the necessary documentation for entry into the 2016/2017 Lega Pro season.

After Sporting Bellinzango decided to pull themselves out of promotion (despite winning Girone A) and Caronnese renouncing their right to apply, Lecco believed they had a good shot at being approved entry. However, as per TuttoMercatoWeb, they failed to show they can pay the €350k required for acceptance. Due their inability to do so, Fano, also known as Alma Juventus Fano, who already submitted their paperwork in full, have been gifted an entry into Lega Pro next season without having to cough up a penny. Last season, Fano finished 2nd in Serie D Girone F behind eventual winners Sambenedettese. Their 3-2 playoff final win over Campobasso gave them the opportunity to be listed among the clubs to be potentially drafted up a tier.

Milik’s Napoli medical set for tomorrow

Polish attacker Arkadiusz Milik is set to complete a move to Napoli from Ajax.

Gonzalo Higuain is officially a Juventus player, which means life after the Argentine must go on. Napoli were quick to address the void in the attack and are closing in on landing 22-year old Arkadiusz Milik from Ajax.

As per Sky Sports, the Polish international is set to complete a move to the Serie A from the Dutch Eredivisie tomorrow, with a medical scheduled in Naples.

The financial details of the deal are still a bit unknown. Calciomercato.com reported that the Partenopei’s offer of €25m plus 5m in bonuses was accepted by the Dutch club. However, De Telegraaf out of Holland identified the fee as 35 million euros.

Milik will join Napoli as he was not called up for Ajax’s Champions League play-off against PAOK FC. The Pole’s arrival, however, does not exclude the club from adding Mauro Icardi from Inter.

Inter offer Mancini bonus to stay

Inter boss flies to New York to offer bonuses to the head coach.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Inter’s sporting director Piero Ausilio made an emergency trip to New York amid reports of chaos in the nerazzurri camp. Following a cancelled training session, reports stated that Mancini was unhappy after a meeting with the new owners, the Suning group and was looking to leave the club.

Ausilio looked to repair the damaged club in the way of offering a Champions League bonus to the head coach.

Inter have also announced the signing of Antonio Candreva, whom the club also offered Champions League bonuses.

Reports from yesterday’s training session in New York indicated problems with Mancini and Mauro Icardi who seemed distant and unhappy with the club.

Learned alot of stuff watching Inter practice today. You can clearly see Mancini & Icardi have problems at the club

Serie D positions open for application

The chaos around who or won’t take their place in Lega Pro for next season is also causing a few headaches further down the Italian football pyramid.

With the new season fast approaching Serie D also finds itself in a bit of pickle as to what will be the make up of its nine separate groups come the start of the new campaign. With the possibility of numerous clubs being plucked from the division and given a spot in Lega Pro, this would leave the fourth tier significantly short on the number of teams required to fill up all its necessary positions.

As such the LND, the leagues governing body, have now drawn up a list of clubs who may apply for a spot in the 2016/17 Serie D season. The bulk of the clubs listed are those who suffered relegation from the division to the Eccellenza last season.

According to Datasport.it the clubs seeking the possible redemption are as follows:

Scandicci, Sansepolcro, Caravaggio, Fiorenzuola, Picerno, Serpentara, San Donato, Sancataldese, Vigasio, Astrea, Clodinese, Aprilla, Fregene, Aquila Montevarchi, Isola Capo and Molfetta

Alessandro Rosina on Salernitana’s radar

Once touted as one of the more promising youngsters in Italian football when he was coming through the ranks at Parma back in the early 2000’s, Alessandro Rosina career has not exactly lived up to expectations.

That being said he has still put together a decent career that would be to the envy of most. Now 32 years of age, the one time capped international is seemingly set to begin yet another chapter in a career that has seen him ply his trade all over the peninsula and as far away as Russia with Zenit St Petersburg.

Currently owned by Lega Pro club Catania, Rosina spent last season out on loan at Serie B club Bari. The diminutive attacker impressed with the Galetti scoring 11 times in 41 appearances but was unable to help the San Nicola outfit achieve a return to Serie A.

Now with the loan ended and his parent club languishing in the third tier Rosina is eyeing another move and according too Tuttomercatoweb that move will be another Serie B club in the shape of Salernitana. The Granata, who’s chairman is none other than Lazio’s Claudio Lotito, narrowly avoided relegation last season and are looking to strengthen their squad for the year ahead. With Rosina seen as the man to do just that.

Negotiations are still in progress but the word is that Salernitana want to get the deal done sooner rather than later
