The Serie A season has just ended and there is a tie for the capocannoniere – both Mauro Icardi of Inter and Luca Toni of Verona each with 22 goals for the season.
A tale of contrasts. On one end Argentinian Icardi, the nerazzurri youngster who became the youngest capocannoniere since Paolo Rossi, who won the golden boot in 1978 at 21 years old. Rossi went on to lead the Azzurri to a World Cup triumph in Spain in 1982.
At the other end of the spectrum is Italian Luca Toni, the Verona veteran who wins his second golden boot (last time was in 2006 with Fiorentina). Toni, at 38 years old, sets the record for the oldest player to ever win the golden boot, beating Dario Hubner who was 35 when he won it in 2001 with Piacenza (and ironically also in a tie, with David Trezeguet).

The numbers are almost similar, and at a first glance you would lean towards Icardi since he played less games and less minutes than Toni. However when we look at Toni, his tally is more impressive given that Verona, who finished in 13th place, was 9 points behind Inter, who finished in 8th place.
An argument can be made that Icardi, who is younger and played on the better team, should have surpassed Toni by a few more goals.
There may be some who believe Inter’s participation in the Europa League negatively affected Icardi’s output, since he had more games to play. This can also be said of Carlitos Tevez of Juventus, who are vying for the treble. Given the additional games and preparation for both Champions League and Coppa Italia, Tevez rested more to prepare for matches other than league ones.
