FIGC President Carlo Tavecchio didn’t appreciate the comments of Juventus President Andrea Agnelli regarding the role of the FIGC in the success of Italian clubs in European competition.
There is no love lost between Carlo Tavecchio and Andrea Agnelli. The animosity between these two powerful men in Italian football is well documented. We just need to go back a few months ago during the FIGC election, where Juventus voted against Tavecchio when he won the presidency.
After calciopoli, Agnelli has made it clear he wants Juventus to get compensated financially from the FIGC for lost revenues and negative will towards the Juventus brand.
Agnelli has never minced his words about how clubs can succeed despite the role of the federation. It was just a few days ago that he stated that Juventus only represents itself with its success, and is not reflective of the system in Italian football which is in crisis.
Yesterday, Agnelli shared his thoughts on the UEFA Champions League final and the performance of Juventus this past season. While sad about the loss to Barcelona he was optimistic for the future. He went on to discuss how Italian teams did well in European competition this year, but made a remark about how it was the clubs who merit the praise and not the Italian ‘calcio’ system.
Agnelli:
“I feel a source of pride for the three Italian teams who have honoured their commitment to the European competitions till the end. Juventus, Napoli and Fiorentina, the latter two came to the brink of the Europa League final. But this is not the success of the Italian football system, but only of three clubs that have worked very well.”
Tavecchio, speaking to SportMediaset, fired back today:
“The words of Agnelli? When presidents do not get results it is the fault of the federation (FIGC), when instead they do get results the federation counts for nothing. I will limit myself to say that the FIGC is the means that allows them (the presidents) to play football. Without the federation no club would be able to express themselves at high levels. The jabs of Agnelli? I believe in the league he gets little satisfaction, because the votes speak for themselves. But I do not think its right to put the blame on the FIGC.”
