Carlo Ancelotti has rejected the offer from Milan to rejoin as their boss behind the bench.
After parting ways with Real Madrid, the Italian coach, also known as “Carletto” was in talks with Milan on a possible return to Italy. Previously coaching the rossoneri from 2001 to 2009, Ancelotti was one of the most successful managers, bringing the Club to a Champions League Title in ’03 and ’07, Coppa Italia Championship in ’03, a Scudetto Title in ’04 and a Club World Cup in ’07.
Ancelotti announced his decision via Twitter, mentioning that it was a difficult decision to say “no” to Milan:
So where does Milan go from here?
First, let’s take a look at the consequences if Ancelotti were in fact to return to the Milan bench. There are plenty of opinions regarding this topic. One thought is that Ancelotti, as one of the greatest managers in football, can bring a taste of success back to Milan with his extensive past experience with the Club. Another opinion is that the Italian manager is a step back into the past, while Milan need to move forward and continue to rebuild a new-era team.
With all the success that Carletto has had, he has never completely rebuilt a team from the ground up, per se. At Milan he came in with players including Filippo Inzaghi, Kaka, Clarence Seedorf, Gennaro Gattuso and Paolo Maldini. Heading to Chelsea, PSG and finally Real Madrid, Ancelotti has always had elite players at his disposal and he knew how to use them in his line-up to best work to their strengths.
The current state of Milan is not even close to the level of competitiveness of teams that Ancelotti has previously coached in comparison. So who should Milan go after? The rossoneri need a manager with previous experience in top-flight football (lesson learned from Inzaghi) without looking back through past record books. Similar to Mancini’s Inter, the team he returned to was nothing similar to what he left behind.
Potential options for Milan?
Aside from a busy mercato period ahead for Milan, the Club need to address its coaching issues immediately. Inzaghi still has a year left on his contract, as both him & Seedorf are included on Milan’s wages until 2016. There have been reports linking the Club with multiple coaches from Sinisa Mihajlovic (coached Sampdoria this season) to Cristian Brocchi (currently Milan’s primavera coach), but out of all these managers, who could potentially be the right fit?
Unai Emery, the current coach of Sevilla has been linked with a move away from his Club following their Europa League win this past May. Napoli have reportedly made an offer for him and West Ham are also interested in the Spanish manager. As a previous coach of Valencia, Emery led the club to qualify for a Europa League spot despite constant financial issues of the Club. The following season, Valencia finished third and clinched Champions League football under Emery.
Vincenzo Montella is believed to be on his way out of Fiorentina and was rumored to replace Inzaghi back in March. He has experience in Europe, having coached Roma for a short stint in 2011 but was ultimately replaced when the giallorossi transfered ownership. When he took over Fiorentina, over 60% of the players were brand new to the squad and considering that, Fiorentina were able to finish fourth, just shy of Champions League football the following season. He also led the viola to the Europa League semi-final this year, only to be beat out by Emery’s Sevilla.
Finally, there are plenty of other mentions for a variety of coaches that had great performances this season including: Maurizio Sarri of Empoli, Eusebio Di Francesco of Sassuolo and Giampiero Ventura of Torino.
Ultimately — Berlusconi, Galliani and the Milan ownership will have to choose a coach who can develop the squad to return to an elite place in Europe, for the long-run.
