The clubs of this seasons Copa America feature a bevy of talent from the Serie A.
On June 6, the eyes of all Serie A fans will be on the Champions League Final, as both Barcelona and Juventus are vying for the coveted treble. Whether you love Juventus or hate them, it would be a substantial achievement for Serie A, and Italian football in general, if the bianconeri were able to overcome their underdog status once again. It would be only the second treble in Italian football history, and the first since 2010, when Inter took the scudetto, the Coppa Italia, and the Champions League title.
Although that is the end of club competition, Serie A fans have another competition to keep their eye on. The Copa America 2015 features a bevy of players that appear on Serie A rosters.
The Argentine national team squad stands out as having the most Serie A players. Napoli’s Gonzalo Higuain and Juventus’ Carlos Tevez will play a major part on the front line of La Albiceleste along with stars like Lionel Messi, Angel Di Maria, and Sergio Aguero. The Argentine midfield features even more players that are on Italian rosters. Lucas Biglia (Lazio) and Roberto Pereyra (Juventus) are both slated to be in the starting XI, as well as goalkeeper Sergio Romero (Sampdoria).
Argentine players are highly favored in Italian football. The most famous of whom of course being Diego Maradona. Maradona won two scudetti with Napoli in 1987 and 1990, along with two straight Copa America titles with Argentina in 1991 and 1993. His Argentina squad, which included Daniel Passarella, former Fiorentina and Inter center back, also won the World Cup in 1986 and were runners up in 1990.
Argentina is not the only country that features Serie A talent on their roster. Arturo Vidal of Juventus will be an important cog in the midfield of host country Chile, with Gary Medel (Inter) and Mauricio Isla (Juventus) in defense. Fiorentina goalkeeper Neto may start for Brazil, while Cristian Zapata (Milan), Luis Muriel (Sampdoria), and Victor Ibarbo (Roma) will all aid Colombia
Italian football clubs concentrate a substantial amount of their scouting on South American countries, and it usually works out for the best, as those areas habitually produce outstanding talent. If anything, Copa America 2015 gives Serie A fans the opportunity to support their favorite players even after club competition is long over.
