Should Juventus sign Robin van Persie?

As Robin van Persie is made to ‘wait and see’ about his future at Manchester United, the Dutch striker continues to be linked with a move to Italy

Louis van Gaal has yet to make a decision on whether his compatriot will be part of his plans next season, with Van Persie only having a year to run on his contract.

After a largely underwhelming season for United, especially given expectations he would be a leading figure following the appointment of Van Gaal as manager, there is a big decision to be made for Van Persie. And it could be time for him to try a new adventure in Serie A.

Van Persie is reportedly wanted by Juventus and the Italian champions had been interested in signing him from Arsenal three years ago before he opted for a move to United. The speculation claims a move for Van Persie will hinge on United’s interest in Napoli striker Gonzalo Higuain.

You can understand the reluctance of Van Gaal to sanction Van Persie’s exit before he has a replacement through the door, especially after deciding against signing Radamel Falcao on a permanent basis.
But, if Van Gaal agrees to let Van Persie go, should Juventus really consider trying to sign him again?
It would largely depend on what Juventus would expect from Van Persie. If they are looking at him to be the man to lead the line, then the answer would be no. If they want him to provide back-up and experience from the bench, then there is merit in the deal being explored.

Juventus are favourites to sign Van Persie, if he does leave United, and http://ift.tt/1FByfiC will have offers if you fancy a punt on his next club. And it would also be a gamble by Juve to sign him.

Van Persie turns 32 in August and this past season offered evidence that he is perhaps no longer the player he was. There were definitely times when Van Persie looked a bit leggy when making his runs. He has never been the speediest, but he seemed to have lost a yard of his pace. The willingness to make clever and incisive runs remains, but the ability to get there fast enough has to be a concern.

He also made just three appearances in the final three months of the season, with two of those coming as a substitute, due to injury. Whether playing in the World Cup last summer has impacted on Van Persie this past season will only be proven next season.

But it’s hard to envisage how his signing would currently improve Juventus’ starting XI as above. The tenacity which is a hallmark of Carlos Tevez’s game is not something Van Persie is also renowned for and, with Juve also set to sign Paulo Dybala from Palermo, surely only a bit-part role for him in Turin would await, especially as there is also Alvaro Morata for competition.

Van Persie has met with his agent to discuss his future and you can understand why he would be concerned about his role at United. In Van Gaal’s 4-3-3 formation, United have looked better without Van Persie as the main striker. The suspicion is that Juventus’ best team would also look better without Van Persie in it.
