Serie B – Seven teams in the hunt for Serie A promotion

Friday, May 22 is the last day of the Serie B season and seven teams are still in the hunt for Serie A promotion. At the other end of the spectrum there is a battle of three teams trying to avoid relegation.

The Serie B play-offs (to determine the third team granted promotion to Serie A) and play-outs (to  determine who will be relegated to Lega Pro) are just around the corner. Every season, three teams get promoted and relegated between Serie A and Serie B, while four teams get promoted and relegated between Serie B and Lega Pro.

This year given the tight race among the teams, seven squads still have a chance to get that final promotion spot to Serie A, namely Vicenza, Bologna, Spezia, Perugia, Avellino, Livorno and Pescara. However one of these teams will be eliminated tomorrow, as only positions 3-8 in the standings participate in the play-offs.

The top two teams have clinched their promotion, Carpi finishing first and Frosinone second.

Whoever finishes third and fourth will get a bye to the semi-final of the playoff round. The 5th place team will face the 8th place team, in a one game elimination. The same will apply to the 6th place team facing the 7th place one.

The 3rd place team will face the winner of the 6th vs 7th matchup, in a two-leg tie.

The 4th place team will face the winner of the 5th vs 8th matchup, in a two-leg tie.

The two winners will face each other in a two-leg tie, where the higher ranked team will play first on the road and the return leg at home. The winner will get promoted to Serie A.

On the relegation side, Brescia and Varese are moving down to Lega Pro, while two among Cittadella, Virtus Entella and Modena will join them.

Suffice to say, it will be extremely fascinating to watch all the drama unfold, especially as all the games are to be played at the same time.

Who do you think will get promoted to Serie A and relegated to Lega Pro?
