Mihajlović: “Bacca and Adriano made the difference”

In his second Serie A match as leader of the red and black, Siniša Mihajlović, despite getting the victory over Empoli, was critical of his side’s performance as the result was not convincing

After getting the first goal of the young season thanks to Luiz Adriano and Carlos Bacca linking up in the first half, Milan’s performance lacked substance and quality, particularly in the middle of the pitch.

The midfield, again, struggled to provide any spark as Andrea Bertolacci and Suso were forced into uncomfortable and pressurized situations. This has been an ongoing problem over the past few seasons and with the window of the summer mercato slowly closing, today’s performance provides more of a reason for the club to bolster this gaping hole in the squad.

After the match, Mihajlović wasn’t afraid to speak his mind on Saturday’s performance. Here is what the former Sampdoria manager had to say about the showing from his side, according to Milanello:

“We played poorly, and I feel like we lost the game even though we won. We didn’t deserve to win today. The only positive thing to take away from this game is the result.

The players were too scared today. We have to work on the mental aspect…The midfielders didn’t take any risks today. They made simple passes to the sides instead of passing it forward. (Carlos) Bacca and Luiz Adriano made the difference today. They scored two goals out of nothing.”

With how Milan performed in these first two matches, Mihajlović is fair in his critiquing. Luiz Adriano provided the delivery to Bacca on his goal and once Bonaventura relieved Suso of the trequartista role, he made an impact in the final third. The former Atalanta man earned free kicks late in the match when it seemed that Empoli could look to counter and he also provided the beautiful corner kick which resulted in Adriano leaping above the defense for the decisive second goal.

Lastly, the new Rossoneri coach also touched on the upcoming derby against Inter in a few weeks. Mihajlović, according to Mediaset:

“The derby? We have two weeks to work. It was important to win today. I take all responsibility, my job is to convey character and grit to the boys.”
