The heat rises as the calciomercato nears its end on August 31 and Italian clubs look to play the role of protagonists with last minute coups. Three days left to complete rosters, before the football movement – fans and media above all – begin to fully evaluate this summer’s moves.
Let’s start with the Italian champions, Juventus, who after closing the deals for Alex Sandro and Juan Cuadrado are preparing the final push for Julian Draxler. The Turin giants agreed to terms with the player a while back (a multi-year contract worth €3.7 million per annum) but were missing the all important agreement with Schalke, who were steadfast in wanting to hold on to the player. In the last few hours, however, the parties seem to have come closer as Draxler’s agent has met Schalke’s brass firmly stating the trequartista‘s desire to leave Gelsenkirchen. Consequently, Schalke has reopened talks with Juventus and the parties could reach an agreement around €27-28 million, with the specific payment formula to be determined.
Inter is closing in to swoop Perisic: the decisive meeting took place yesterday in Monaco. The nerazzurri are very active in these last days of the mercato involved in the negotiation of many players, among these is the one involving a possible swap with Roma that would see attacking midfielder Adem Ljajic head to Milan, while nerazzurro defender Juan Jesus would make the opposite trip. The alternative is Sampdoria’s Italian-Brazilian Eder. Finally, Inter has made a serious inquiry for Atletico Madrid’s Brazilian left-back Siquiera.
On the other side of the Naviglio, Milan officially announced the acquisitions of Mario Balotelli and Juraj Kucka, while they’re working to place Matri who is very close to making a new experience in the English Premier League, at West Ham. From the nearly concrete to the absolutely bizarre: the passage of Mexes to Fiorentina seemed all but sown up until a last-minute about-face by the Frenchman. The situation remains fluid: there’s friction between the player and Mihajlovic that might lead Mexes to find a new destination in the dying days of the mercato.
Lastly, a quick look at Palermo, Napoli and Fiorentina: the Sicilian side has officially announced the signing of Alberto Gilardino and is trying to convince Empoli to give them Tonelli. Napoli has been denied once more by Maksimovic, while the negotiation with Vecino remains open with Fiorentina, who, in turn, is negotiating with Manchester City for their 20 year-old defender Denayer.
Between denials and confirmations, calciomercato remains an unsatiable beast, and the surprises are just around the corner. The heat rises.
