Former Milan and Italian national team coach Arrigo Sacchi, spoke about the Champions League during the unveiling of his new book “Calcio Totale” at the Salone del Libro in Turin.
Sacchi discussed many topics and touched on the success of Juventus in Champions League while giving his thoughts on Italy’s last Champions League winner, Inter. He also gave Juventus some advice on facing Barcelona in the final.
Praise for Juventus
“After several dark years, Italian football is shining once again thanks to Juventus. It has been five years since the success of Inter in 2010 that an Italian club has reached the final.”
“The credit goes to the club and the coaching staff who have worked so hard and of course to the players. I hope Juventus will win the Champions League.”
Shame for Inter
Sacchi did not mince his words about Inter’s 2010 Champions League roster.
“The nerazzurri succeeded without a single Italian on the team, that is shameful! In Italy we are willing to sell our soul to the devil in order to win. Clubs in other countries, such as Real Madrid who have fantastic players, and expensive ones, uses Spanish players. We instead are not happy to win this way.”
Advice against Barcelona
Sacchi warned against the danger of focusing solely on Messi and the need to work as a collective.
“How can you stop Barcelona? First of all by making very few mistakes and then with the strength of the collective. You must go over every detail in training, so that when he takes the field, every player knows what’s coming and what they should do.”
“You should always think of playing as a team and not as an individual, just like you should not focus against an individual.”
