Serie B week 40 round-up

Ah Serie B lovers I bet you’d thought we’d forgotten about you this week, but have no fear the report is here bringing you the latest from the majestic Italian second tier.

With only two more rounds of action to go it remains similar to what it was at the top so we’ll begin this weeks round-up by taking stock of events that are happening towards the bottom. Technically anyone from 21st to 10th can either extract themselves or fall victim of the dreaded relegation, making this a nail biting time for all involved.

In what was perhaps the biggest game at the bottom Ternana played host to Pro Vercelli at the Stadio Liberati. With both sides level on points heading into the match a win for one would go a long way to securing there long term future in Serie B.

It was the Rossoverdi who had the best of the earlier opportunities and in truth really should have had themselves one if not two up. However they found Vercelli stopper Danilo Russo in fine form between the sticks. Inevitably as it so often does for a side who miss so many clear chances Ternana fell behind on 31 minutes, Manuel Scavone delivering the killer blow seeing the ball just about over the line from a rebound off the bar.

Ternana continued to pass up more chances to get back into the game and any chance they did have was eventually given the killer blow on 52 minutes with the sending off of Sub Marco Dugandzic, six minutes after coming on. Pro Held on from there to claim a precious three points, Ternana meanwhile slip into the play-out positions.

Crotone were another to pick up a priceless win, this time at home to already relegated Varese. Jacopo Dezi’s header, just beating the advancing keeper to the ball, just past the half hour mark was enough to earn the Rossoblu a shot at salvation.

Brescia manfully continue to fight against there demise, results at the weekend mean now that the best they can achieve is a play-out position, but they are doing all in there power to get just that. Saturday saw them record a fine Four-Two win at the Rigamonti against a Catania side who are not totally out of the woods themselves either.

Alessio Sestu and Valerio Di Cesare had the Biancoazzurri two up by the half an hour mark. Yet with only 18 minutes to play Alessandro Rosina halved the deficit for the Elefanti. Many in Brescia’s position would of crumbled, but only two minutes later they restored the two goal advantage. Ahamad Benali secured the points in the 79th minute before Nahuel Castro scored a consolation in stoppage time.

Cittadella picked up what may in the end prove to be a vital point with a one all draw at home to promotion chasing Frosinone. A win for the Canarini could possibly have meant automatic promotion to Serie A for the first time in there history.

And they went about things in the right way Danillo Soddimo scoring on 27 minutes, drilling low and hard into the bottom right corner past Andrea Pirebon. However with only 11 minutes left Citta replied to postpone the promotion party for the travelling support Giullio Bizzotto latching onto a through ball to finish from a tight angle.

Latina overcame Bari two-nil with goals in either half from Riccardo Brosco and Chidiebere Oduamadi giving them breathing space from those closer to the bottom. There was no doubt who was one of the biggest losers of the weekend.

Modena slipped precariously close to the drop with a crushing three – nil defeat down in Sicily against Trapani, Davis Curiale with the pick of the goals for the Granata. The result sees the Gialloblu hover one point above the Play-out positions with only 180 minutes of action left in this pulsating Serie B campaign.

On Friday night Livorno enhanced there play-off candidacy with a two – one win against another relegation threatened outfit in Virtus Entella. Andrea Mazzaroni had given Entella the lead on 65 minutes before Daniele Vantaggiato responded from the spot blasting into the bottom left corner.

Then for the second week in a row the Amaranto pounced deep into stoppage time Enej Jelenic finishing after a beautiful chest pass from Vantaggiato. Joy for Livorno, despair for Entella.

Pescara and Perugia played out an enthralling affair at the Adriatico. Ledian Memushaj and Federico Melchiorri put the Delfini two up just before the hour mark. Having being reduced to ten men the match looked done and dusted for the Grifone, yet Matteo Ardemagni gave them hope with a goal in the 68th minute.

Then on 73 minutes Perugia pulled off the improbable when Edoardo Goldangia levelled tipping home the ball rebounding off the post. Goldangia was then given his marching orders with five minutes left leaving Perugia with only nine men to see out the game. That they duly did for an unlikely point.

Back towards the top Bologna were unable to pick up a win in Delio Rossi’s first match in charge. Alessandro Sbaffo gave Avellino the lead on 35 minutes, stabbing home a low cross along the six yard box. Marcel Buchel then drew Bologna. The Rossoblu then thought they had won the match but Robert Aquafresca saw his penalty wonderfully saved by Pierluigi Fratalli. One all it finished.

The final two games of the weekend end scoreless, Carpi playing at home to Virtus Lanciano and Spezia against Vicenza a result not exactly helpful for either party in that last encounter.

Only two weeks to go in Serie B and there is no telling what will happen. The bottom of the table is so compact that it would be a wild stab in the dark to predict the final outcome, while the at the top things could still turn at the drop of a hat.

Finally congratulations to Novara who have bounced back into Serie B at the first time of asking.

Till next week,

Arrivederci
