Juventus: The Hunt for the Elusive Trequartista

We are a couple of weeks away from the start of Serie A and Juventus fans all around the world have been scratching their heads over who the next transfer will be. With Sami Khedira out 2 months, Andrea Barzagli and Giorgio Chiellini picking up minor knocks (2-3 weeks), Juventus fans seem to have entered panic mode and have taken to twitter complaining about the front office and its summer moves. First things first, don’t panic (here’s why). Secondly, a signing is coming soon. Whether it be Draxler or another name out of left field, Juventus have their ducks in order and are aware of the holes in their lineup due to injury. As far as a trequartista is concerned, the answer is not so clear, cut, and dry and maintains to be elusive.

Over the past season, Juventus fans have learned that Allegri loves his 4-3-1-2 formation with the use of a trequartista. A trequartista to those of you who dont know is a player who sits behind the two strikers and is a free roaming kind of attacking midfielder. He doesn’t necessarily have to be a number 10 but is usually a creative player, particularly in the final third. This past 2014-2015 season saw Arturo Vidal take the helm as the trequartista. His hunger and tenacity for the ball allowed him to win it high up the pitch and put pressure on the defenders and central midfielders. Not your average definition of a trequartista but effective nonetheless. This year the hunt has taken a new direction….

With names such as Draxler, Sneijder, Oscar, Isco, etc. this elusive hunt so far has turned up with nothing to brag about at the trequartista postion; but there is something many are discounting. His name is Paulo Dybala and he can play just about anywhere in the final third. If Dybala sits behind the striking partnership of Mario Manzukic and Alvaro Morata his free roaming nature may lead Juventus in the right direction in terms of their hunt. Another household name is Paul Pogba. The polpo, that’s octopus, can do just about everything Vidal and Dybala can do, just in one fancy French package, bow included. If the hunt ends up nowhere, or Juventus sign an unproven player at the position, the old lady have pieces that can fit inside the 2015-16 puzzle. All eyes and ears are open and many are sitting in anticipation over some breakthrough transfer news but the answer may be right in Turin’s own backyard.

Do many bianconeri believe Juventus will sign their “quarterback” this summer? Yes, but, the answer may already be on their star studded roster.
