With four games left in the season and nothing to play for, Milan coach Pippo Inzaghi plans on giving space to youngsters to gain some experience playing in Serie A.
Throughout the season, due to injuries and other reasons, Inzaghi has called up some youngsters as part of his 23 man roster for Serie A matches however they have seldom seen time on the pitch.
Following Milan’s 3-0 loss to Napoli, in his post-match press conference Inzaghi discussed his plans moving forward:
“In our remaining games we will have the opportunity to insert some youngsters like we did tonight. We now have four matches to give space to the kids from the youth squad that merit it.”
Many Milan fans have been clamoring for the youth to be given an opportunity to gain some experience, as the rossoneri are in a transition phase building for the future. It was a few months ago that owner Silvio Berlusconi declared that he wanted a future Milan that was “young and Italian.” Given the lacklustre results this season, it is surprising it took this long to give the youth squad a chance.
One has to wonder if waiting so long to make the kids play will affect their development. On the one hand, knowing there is nothing to play for and the pressure to win is gone, it can be beneficial to play in such conditions. On the other, an argument can be made you want to test your youth players in meaningful games, where winning is vital and in an environment that is positive where the team is playing well. In such an environment you want your young player to earn a spot with the big club and force the coach’s hand for the next game.
I suppose at this point, its better late than never. We will have to see in the summer and next season in what direction the club will be heading
