Juventus fullback Patrice Evra is ready to go head to head with former Premier League rival and current Barcelona man Luis Suarez in the UCL final
Barcelona were the first to punch their ticket to Berlin this week as they defeated Bayern Munich in the two-leg battle. A day later, the Old Lady joined them after fending off the La Liga outfit’s hated rival, Real Madrid, making for a thrilling Champions League final on June 6th.
Everyone is fully aware of the polarizing names that will take the stage in a few weeks in Germany but let’s not forget that familiar foes will perhaps find themselves in many battles that could prove to be important in the outcome. Former Premier League rivals Patrice Evra (Juventus) and Luis Suarez (Barcelona) are set to rekindle their not so friendly relationship when the two sides face off in early June.
A few years back when Evra was starring for Manchester United, Luis Suarez was handed an eight match ban for racially abusing the French international while at Liverpool. When the clubs met again after the incident, the Uruguayan appeared to avoid shaking the hand of the Frenchman in pre-match handshakes which ignited the United man. From that point forward, it was clear the two weren’t fond of each other.
Fast forward a few years and now the two players are set to meet once again, this time in front of millions of football fans worldwide on the biggest stage in the game, the Champions League final. The 34-year old Evra was interviewed by Sky Sports on what it will be like to go toe to toe with Suarez in the UCL final. Here is what the bianconeri defender had to say on the subject:
“A lot of people ask me this question. It doesn’t matter. The most important thing is I play the final, you know. I am proud to be what I am, I am proud about my color and I will shake his hand, it is no problem, but I will make sure he feels my presence on the pitch.”
Of course, the stars will align for this potentially historic Champions League final but leading up to the first whistle, the history between Evra and Suarez is a matchup that could swing the result either way. Patrice Evra versus Luis Suarez, a bout surely worth keeping your eyes on.
