MATCH PREVIEW: Inter look to gain traction in Derby D’Italia

With Inter’s recent run in successful form, the nerazzurri will host Juventus at the San Siro with hopes to close the gap on Europa League qualification.

Coming off of their League Championship Title and advancing to the Champions League final, Juventus have well enough reason to rest their top players when they visit the San Siro to take on Inter in the Derby D’Italia.

Juventus coach, Massimiliano Allegri has already sat Buffon, Evra, Vidal, Pirlo and Tevez ahead of this weekend.

Even with the bianconeri’s top players on the sidelines, Inter coach Roberto Mancini still expects a difficult game at home against the Serie A Champions as he spoke to press during the pre-match conference:

“The game against Juventus will not be easy because they are riding a wave of enthusiasm. Even the players from the bench will give their all to prove their value. Juve deserve the Scudetto and I congratulate them for reaching the final.”

With Juventus’ impressive fixtures recently, Inter should give themselves a bit more credit, as the nerazzurri have won three of their last four league games, conceding only three goals in their last six matches.

Inter currently sit three points of Fiorentina in fifth and will continue to push through the remaining league fixtures to close the gap. With Hernanes serving a suspension from last week and Guarin out due to injury, there may be an opportunity for the Swiss man Xherdan Shaqiri to make an appearance in the starting lineup alongside Icardi.

Probable Line-up: Handanovic; D’Ambrosio, Vidic, Ranocchia, Jesus; Brozovic, Medel, Kovacic; Shaqiri, Icardi, Palacio

With Juve preparing for the Coppa Italia and Champions League final matches, Massimiliano Allegri stressed the importance of a victory this weekend:

“We are Juve and we need to maintain high levels of motivation. Inter need to win to maintain a push for Europa League football and we want to keep up our good condition for the Coppa Italia and Champions League finals.”

Already securing their fourth straight Scudetto, Allegri has already sat Buffon, Evra, Vidal, Pirlo and Tevez ahead of this weekend. By resting his top players, we could see the former Milan boss start players including Pepe, Matri and Llorente from the start, as he has already confirmed he wants to field a competitive side against Inter. It is also likely we will see Storari get his place between the posts with Buffon being left out of the lineup.

Probable Line-up: Storari; Asamoah, Barzagli, Ogbonna, Ceglie; Sturaro, Marchisio, Padoin; Pepe; Matri, Llorente

Recent match-ups in the Derby D’Italia have seen Juventus draw 1-1 the last time they visited the San Siro. Inter have not beaten the Old Lady since November of 2012.

Expect a high-paced match, especially since Inter still have something to play for in hopes of qualifying for Europa League next season. With Inter’s recent success in form lately, they will take advantage of Juve’s best players being out of the lineup.
