Player Focus: Paulo Dybala

Palermo’s young gem Paulo Dybala has been arguably the most talked about name in Italy this season as he has emerged onto the scene as a young star

Paulo Dybala, born November 15, 1993, is a young 21-year old forward for Palermo but he isn’t just any player for the rosaneri. Dybala has been the man making it happen for manager Giuseppe Iachini this season, showcasing his pace, creativity, finishing ability and flair. The young Argentinian-born forward has been the club’s best player this season and in the eyes of many viewers of the Italian top-flight, it’s not even up for debate. He has carried his side to some big wins this season against Milan (2-0) and Cagliari (5-0), proving that when in form, he can carry a team to positive results.

Of course, Dybala is the main man up front for Palermo so naturally, his goal scoring rate needs to be looked at, especially if he is to be considered in eyes of Europe as a perennial star. In 33 Serie A matches this season for his club, the player has netted an impressive 13 goals, ten assists, with the goal tally making him a top 10 scorer in the league at age 21. When he sits near the top of the scoring charts with names like Carlos Tevez and Gonzalo Higuain, it certainly causes one to stop and take notice of his talent. At the moment, Palermo sit in 11th place in the league on 43 points but for the entire season, Dybala has been the key component to helping his team remain competitive. As a result of his mouthwatering ability, winners of four consecutive Scudetto titles and Champions League finalists Juventus have reportedly inked a deal to bring in the gem from Palermo this summer.  Club president of Palermo, Maurizio Zamparini, had been open with the media on the future of the young star at his current club. Here is what the president had to say about the prized asset he purchased from Argentina side Instituto back in 2012 for roughly €12m, according to Mediaset from November 2014:

“Within two years, he’s going to be better than Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and Zlatan Ibrahimovic. It would take 40 million euros to take him away from us.”

Clearly, Zamparini has set a high ceiling for his young player to surpass when you place Dybala in the same sentence as those three elite attackers. However, he has changed his opinion on the player after supposedly being upset with how he has handled himself amid links to big clubs like Juventus, Arsenal, Manchester United, Paris Saint-Germain among others. The president voiced his concerns on the player to Radio Kiss Kiss Napoli:

“I’m no longer talking to him. He’s changed completely. There are people who are climbing all over him, and he’s attracted by rumours and false information. He’s a great and intelligent lad, but he’s being corrupted by bad influences…It’s very unlikely that he will stay here.”

Dybala appears set to make the move to the Old Lady this summer as both of the clubs have agreed to a transfer for the player.

Player Details:

Name: Paulo Dybala

Age: 21

Height: 5’10”

Position(s): Striker-Center Forward-Center Attacking Midfielder

Nationality: Argentina

Preferred Foot: Left

Club: Palermo

 Strengths:

Paulo Dybala is a player who possesses several talents and we have seen them all on display this season for Palermo. With him being among the top Serie A, it’s clear that he is a true goalscorer that, with perhaps a move abroad to a team like Juventus with an enhanced supporting cast, could mold into a 15-20 goal forward when you factor in his entire skill-set. The player has above average pace and acceleration, both fully capable of beating defenders. His finishing ability is quite clear based on his performance, including his beautiful left-footed curler for goal against Genoa this season. Additionally, the young Argentine has an excellent first touch of the ball that goes hand in hand with his creativity and pace, allowing him to better his position for goal scoring chances. At age 21, he has a ton in his arsenal to be special but he is still a raw talent with room for growth.

Weaknesses:

While its clear what his major strengths are, the weaknesses in Dybala’s game are obvious. He heavily favors his left foot, even in chances when his right foot should be called upon to put goals away. This could partially stem from how confident he is in his left, almost to the point that until he is stopped, the usage of his weaker foot doesn’t diminish his overall performance around net. As he moves on, managers will look to exploit that weakness in his game and how he adjusts to that could prove tough for him. Dybala is a smaller-bodied player which isn’t a major issue at the moment but as defenders become more physical with him in order to shut down his movement, he could have some problems finding himself in certain areas of the field. Some people have compared him to fellow countryman Sergio Aguero which is a good comparison for the most part. However, the City player is a bit more “bulky” in frame and because of that, jockeying with physical defenders isn’t an issue. In time, Dybala could put on some size to help him sustain the performance he has shown and it will be needed when he moves to Juventus where he will play in more matches due to multiple competitions.

The time is now for Dybala

It appears that this starlet will move abroad to Juventus in the summer. Next season when he plays for the bianconeri, he will certainly get more global exposure especially when he plays in the Champions League which is a dream for all. Because of this, we can see a jump in performance due to the fact that he will have a crop of world-class players to help him get to where he needs to be. After recently committing to Argentina, he can learn how to better himself as a player from the likes of Messi and Aguero, who both are elite status players. It’s clear this youngster has off the chart ability and these last few weeks should be a real treat for Juventini but tough for Palermo supporters as they see their star depart for greener pastures like Javier Pastore did when he made the switch from the Rosaneri to the Parisian side. This exciting player will be among the biggest to swap kits this summer to make a dream move where he will have to prove the hype is real.
