Sebastien Corchia May Choose to Play for Italy over France

One of the more technical and disciplined wingbacks in Ligue 1 could be coming to Italy… For Antonio Conte?

Meet Sebastien Corchia, the left back for Lille who played for France’s U-21 but has Italian origins. Today, he spoke with La Gazzetta dello Sport on a possible and unexpected scenario: Wearing the jersey of the Italian national team, after wearing the shirt and the captains armband for France’s U-21.

“I went through the youth ranks with France, 26 appearances for the U-21, in which I was even the captain. The logic would be to continue to be in Blue, but it isn’t an automatic discussion. I have also an Italian culture, and not only my mom (Who’s Italian and was born in Milan) I have many family members in Milano, who I see frequently, I speak Italian, and I grew up following Serie A. If the call arrives from Conte, I’ll take it with serious consideration. But to be honest, nobody from the Italian team has contacted me, instead, Deschamps has pre-called me,” Corchia said.

The Lille left back, has dual-citizenship with Italy and even carries an Italian passport.

“It is a delicate debate that sometimes go off the topic of football. But only who is born and raised with a double culture can understand why it’s difficult to choose between them. The double passport is a resource and gives the right to choose [who to play for].”

Paolo Maldini, the Milan legend and Philipp Lahm  are his idols, Corchia says.

“Maldini is great, technical, elegant, an example on and off the pitch. In France it was Sagnol, today it’s Lahm, modern and complete. I prefer to play as a left back, but football requires versatility, therefore I work very hard in training.”

“On my future? Will it be at Lille? I find it so. There’s an ideal environment here to grow. The the dream is to play outside of France, for a big club. I admire the Bundesliga for the offensive style, and the Serie A for the tactics: Juve, Napoli and Fiorentina, however, are bringing out from the crisis the movement that calcio doesn’t have to be only defensive. It would be interesting to see it live.”

The 24 year old defender has played in over 40 games in all competitions this season, scoring three goals in the process.
