Even the small can dream big. This time two seasons ago Frosinone were wallowing in self-pity as the club suffered relegation to Lega Pro. Skip on those two years and how times of change, not only have the Canarini returned to Serie B, they are now Serie A bound for the first time in their history.
That improbable dream was achieved on Saturday afternoon in front of a sell-out Stadio Matusa. As the fans sang and roared till hoarse the players went and did the business on the pitch. Visitors Crotone just had no answer to the wall of noise and players being bombarded at them.
As such it only took the hosts 16 minutes to break the deadlock, Daniel Ciofani latching onto a corner from the right to volley in home. If the stadium had erupted for that it really went off the hinges when the second followed on 41 minutes, Federico Dionisi’s long range effort getting the better of the keeper who will feel he could have done much better.
By now the promotion party was in full swing and with 20 minutes remaining the icing was put on the cake when Dionisi pounced for his second and Frosinone’s third, after a mix up between Rossoblu defender and Keeper.
Crotone did pull one back through Abel Gigli but it was not to matter. A Serie B season that has already seen the magical happen just continues to amaze, Frosinone are going up.
On Friday night Perugia cemented there play-off position come the end of the season, beating champions Carpi, a Carpi who it must be said look like they’ve been on there holidays for the last few weeks, Two-nil.
The pick of the goals coming from Matteo Ardemagni, finishing off a neat free flowing move. Towards the bottom, Cittadella refuse to throw in the towel as they outfought Catania to keep their slim hopes of survival alive.
Citta still sit in the bottom three, two points from safety, but the relegation experts may somehow pull off another miraculous escape. As for the game in question goals from Federico Gerardi, Tomasz Kupisz and Francesco Stanco saw off the Elefanti, a still not technically safe Elefanti, Three-Two.
Continuing to look at the bottom and Ternana picked up an absolutely, positively gargantuan win (I can’t stress how big a three points this was) away to fellow strugglers Modena. A Biagio Meccariello own goal had given the Gialloblu the lead, bouncing in off the player’s knee on 31 minutes.
However in first half injury time Terni equalised, Pasquale Fazio benefiting from Modena’s failure to clear their lines. Then with 13 minutes to play Nicolas Avenatti stroked home after a free from the left ricocheted off the wall and into his path. Two-one it finished, Ternana jubilant, Modena despondent.
Second half sub Davide Luppi struck with only three minutes to play to give Pro Vercelli a share of the spoils at home to Bologna. In a match that had repercussions at both ends of the table, the point will be more happily received by Vercelli then a Bologna side who have flattered to deceive this campaign.
Having benefited from late goals in each of their last two matches, Livorno saw Karma come back and kick them in the ass as they allowed Vicenza and specifically Salvatore Cocco to score from the spot three minutes into added time cancelling out Daniele Vantaggiato’s opener. Amaranto keeper Luca Mazzoni meanwhile was sent off after the final whistle for let’s say exchanging words with the referee.
Another who stole something right at the death was Trapani drew with Avellino one all. Alessandro Sbaffo gave the Lupi a dubious lead on 55 minutes, challenging the keeper in the air in the six yard box. The keeper as a result dropped the ball which was instantly pounced on and turn home. However six minutes into added time the Granata got there revenge, Mattia Caldara heading home a free from the right.
Already relegated Varese have shown some fighting spirit in the last few games that was sorely lacking a crucial points this season and that was in evidence again on Saturday. The opponents were play-off chasing Pescara.
In the end goals from Nikola Jakimovski and Luca Forte in the 94th minute sandwiched a Ledian Memushaj effort to give the Leopardi the win.
Spezia went to Lanciano and picked up an impressive three points against Virtus, Mario Situm and Niccolo Giannetti were the men of the moment. The other Virtus, Entella, did their survival hopes no harm beating an all but mathematically safe Latina. Entella do remain in the play-out position but have the chance of escaping it on what will be an enthralling final day at the bottom of the table.
Finally Brescia’s brave fight to remain in Serie B came to an end on Saturday evening. Results elsewhere meant the Biancoazzurri had already been relegated before they took to the field in the evening encounter against Bari. A match the Galletti won three-two.
Only one week remains in what has been a memorable Serie B campaign. 90 minutes of action that is sure to bring about some fascinating plot changes. Ah Serie B you got to love it.
