Cuadrado: “When we play like that we’re a tough team to beat”

Juan Cuadrado spoke post match to Sport Mediaset, after the 2-0 victory at home for Juventus.

“First of all, I’m happy for the great performance by the team, when we play like this, we’re really tough to beat. In the last few games we were missing a little bit of luck, we create many chances, but we don’t close them, now we’ve turned the page and we’re thinking about the next game which will be like a finale for us. Allegri has really insisted on passing the ball at the right moment instead of always dribbling. He told me to play the most simple possible and I’m happy to have done what he asked me. We have a great game [as a team].

Inter’s Ljajic: It’s Still Early

Inter Milan forward Adem Ljajic has spoken exclusively to Inter Channel the day after his birthday: “Thank you so much to the fans for the birthday wishes, yesterday was a really special day for me. I started playing professionally at 16 for Partizan Belgrade, then at Fiorentina, Roma and then I finally arrived here at Inter. For eight years I’ve played at these incredibly high levels; it’s something not even I would’ve expected myself to do: I’m just so happy that I’ve done it.”

The Serbian then had a few words to say about Inter’s last match that ended 1-4 in Fiorentina’s favor: “Fiorentina’s surprise demolition? We know they’re a squad that can cause many problems for any club. I know them well: they have incredible technique and understanding of each other, not to mention we started the match very badly and, on top of that, Miranda got the red card. It was always going to be a difficult match. Now we must forget this game and look forward to the next match, it’s still very early in the season.”

Inter sit level with Fiorentina at the top of the table with 15 points each.

Three Things We Learned From Juventus’ Win Over Sevilla

Today, Juventus hosted last year’s Europa League winners Sevilla and dispatched of them expertly by a score of 2-0 to go atop group D.

6-1-0. That is Juventus’ record under Allegri in Champions League games at home since he’s taken over. Today’s performance against the Spanish side was no different. The former Milan boss put up another tactical masterclass in Europe as he had Juventus alternating between the 3-5-2 and 4-3-3 formations in attack and defense. As a result, Sevilla couldn’t find a way into the game and really struggled throughout. Now, the bianconeri find themselves on six points and atop group D. Here are three things we learned about tonight’s win.

Morata: “It’s an honor for me to match Del Piero”

Alvaro Morata, goalscorer in tonight’s 2-0 victory over Sevilla spoke to Sky Sport after the match.

“It’s an honor for me to have done what Del Piero did, who is a legend in world football and for Juventus. But I have to do a lot more to be like him. We have to continue to work, we’ll forget this win and think about the league where things aren’t going so well. We know what we have to do, when we play well and we give it our all on the pitch we can get back to the top in Serie A. I’m working hard to score lots of goals in the league, but there it’s more difficult because there is not a lot of space. I believe, however, we’ll get back up there”.

Paulo Dybala spoke post match over his side’s 2-0 victory at the Juventus Stadium over Spanish adversaries Sevilla.

When quizzed on how he felt about wearing the Juventus shirt, Dybala responded with more comments towards the future. “I really have to work hard because this is a team that has been accustomed to winning for a very long time. We’re working to score more goals like this, we want to bring Juventus back to the top and I want to continue to fight for more great performances like this,” he concluded.

When asked to describe his goal, Zaza commented: “I was through [on goal] and I tried to make the best of the chance. The credit for my goal goes to Morata and Dybala seeing that for the entire game they made the defenders tired. For me, it was my first game in the Champions League, the environment around this time hasn’t been positive. Sunday will be another important game. The Serie A isn’t over yet because of the lost points, we can get earn them back”.

Fiorentina seek their first Europa League win vs Belenenses

Buoyed by their outstanding 4-1 victory away to Inter at the weekend, Fiorentina will be looking to get off the mark against Belenenses following their opening Group I game defeat at home to Basel.

Match Preview

The Viola are unbeaten in their last three visits to Portugal, but Belenenses will be a tough opponent given their excellent defensive record in Europe this season. Ricardo Sa Pinto’s team are undefeated in their five European matches, and have conceded just one goal, at home to IFK Gothenburg in the third qualifying round. However, in those games they have not come up against a team that boasts the firepower possessed by Fiorentina.

Three of Belenenses’ last four European fixtures have ended 0-0, including their opening group game away to KKS Lech Poznan. Fiorentina will feel that if they can score early, they will be able to control the game and register their first win of this European campaign.

Although Fiorentina can ill-afford to drop any more points at this stage in the Group, the Viola coach, Paulo Sousa, may look to freshen things up following Sunday’s league win against Inter. Fiorentina will however be without the services of Gonzalo Rodriguez who is suspended following his dismissal against Basel. One would anticipate that at least two of Mario Suarez, Khouma Babacar, Giuseppe Rossi and Federico Bernadeschi to receive some game time in this fixture, given none of them featured against Inter.

Belenenses are currently 13th in Portugal’s Primera Liga, and Fiorentina, as Serie A leaders, should overcome them quite convincingly on current form.

The Fiorentina squad which has travelled to Belenenses is as follows: Alonso, Astori, Babacar, Badelj, Bernardeschi, Blaszczykowski, Borja Valero, Fernandez, Ilicic, Kalinic, Lezzerini, Rebic, Roncaglia, Rossi, Sepe, Suarez, Tatarusanu, Tomovic, Vecino, Verdu.

Probable starting lineup and formation:

Fiorentina (3-5-2): Sepe; Tomovic, Astori, Alonso; Blaszczykowski ,Verdù, Suarez, Fernandez, Bernardeschi; Rossi, Babacar.

Suspended: Rodriguez

Injured: Gilberto, Pasqual, Roncaglia

Walter Mazzarri is a potential successor to Rudi Garcia at Roma

Things haven’t been going according to plan this season for Roma’s Rudi Garcia

Already heavily under fire for dropping 7 points from the first six games, the loss away to minnows BATE Borisov may have put the French coach firmly on the hotseat.

Yesterday, some Roma fans even claimed that Rudi should have been given the boot from the capital city side.

Now there’s some reports going around that Roma could have already earmarked their successor in the form of Walter Mazzarri.

The former Inter and Napoli coach is ranked towards the top of the list of candidates for the eventual “after-Garcia” era. Although there have been other rumors circling that Mazzarri could land an EPL job.

This report was started when calcio expert Ivan Zazzaroni spoke to Radio Marte saying that the Roma directors “have the idea” of appointing the Italian tactician.

Roma take on Palermo in Sicily this weekend before the international break.

Europa League Preview: Lazio aiming for a victory over Saint Etienne

After a heartbreaking draw in their first group match Lazio will look to secure all three points at home against French side Saint Etienne.

Group G has gotten off to a slow start, with all four teams on equal footing following match day one. Lazio took the lead against Dnipro and looked to be well on their way to securing 3 points however in the dying seconds of the game a defensive error allowed Evgen Seleznyov to equalize. On the other hand, it was Saint Etienne who needed a late goal in order to salvage a point at home against Rosenberg.

Lazio are coming into this game with a bit of confidence, they are on a two game winning streak and captain Lucas Biglia returned from injury last week and scored a vital goal. Couple that with the fact that Antonio Candreva will be ready for the game on Sunday means Lazio are slowly starting to regain their full arsenal of players.

Saint Etienne has had a successful start to their Ligue 1 season as they are currently in second place, just 4 points behind PSG. Veteran defender Loic Perrin has been the catalyst thus far, accounting for 27% of the team’s goals. Look for Florentin Pogba, the older brother of Paul, to start along side Perrin for the French side.

Despite Saint Etienne having a better league position than their opponent Lazio should be in a strong position to get the victory. While Lazio’s defense has been shaky at best they should have an easier time now that Biglia is back in the mix. Manager Stefano Pioli has stated that: “the team must have great respect for the opponent” and “that we have to approach the game with a strong mentality.”

Match Details:

Date and Time: Thursday, October 1st 19:00 CET

Match Official: Halis Özkahya

Probable Lineups and Formations:

Lazio: (4-2-3-1) Marchetti; Basta, Mauricio, Gentiletti, Radu; Parolo, Biglia; Anderson, Milinkovic-Savic, Kishna; Djordevic

Saint Etienne: (4-2-3-1) Ruffier; Malcuit, Perrin, Pogba, Polomat; Lemoine, Clement; Hamouma, Eysseric, Bahebeck; Roux

Mr. Bee set to arrive in Milano: The Latest

Finally coming to terms face-to-face at Milan, The Corriere della Sera emphasized that a meeting that happened yesterday between Sinsia Mihajovic and Adriano Galliani has brought the seemingly soft and timid team together that lost abysmally at Genoa.

There is also corporate news in AC Milan’s headquarters: today is the day set for Bee Taechaubol to be in Milano to be handed 48% of the club’s shares. The thai stock broker will meet with Fininvest who have been working for months on the negotiations and, in all likelihood, Silvio Berlusconi.
However, it seems as the signing has been put to a temporary halt. As of now, it is understood that the thai man is not in Milano to close the deal, but to ask for a referral with a minimum of three weeks. Mister Bee will push for an extension on time of signing for 48% of the club due to technical reasons of transferring the money. Bee is currently stressing the construction of a new ad hoc company which would then be then used to safely raise the 480 million. This is a minor setback, but Bee wants to get it done accordingly.

Juventus v Sevilla: Both Sides Looking To Kick-start their Season

In the second matchday of Champions League action, Italian champions Juventus host Sevilla in hopes of opening up a lead at the top of the group.

On the first matchday of Group D action, both Juventus and Sevilla claimed the three points against Manchester City and Borussia Moenchengladbach respectively. After going down early in the second half, the Italian champions rallied back and claimed the three points at the Etihad Stadium. All in all, Massimiliano Allegri’s side looked good on the night and deserved the three points. Sevilla, on the other hand, comfortably took care of Borussia Moenchengladbach and beat the Germans easily by a score of 3-0. The Spanish side have demonstrated their European pedigree in the last few seasons as they have won the last two editions of the Europa League.

Last season Juventus proved their doubters wrong and made it all the way to the final of the Champions League. Prior to this, the Italian giants failed to replicate their domestic form on the international stage. After losing Andrea Pirlo, Arturo Vidal and Carlos Tevez, many expected the side to take a step back. However, Allegri’s men showed encouraging signs in their victory over Manchester City and reminded everyone just how good they can be. Going into the game against Sevilla, the bianconeri have the opportunity to claim control of the group despite their poor form in the league.

Sevilla, similarly to Juventus, have enjoyed a torrid start to the new season. Like their opposition, Emery’s men have only won one of their six league games. Despite their overall poor play, Sevilla have not been helped by the injury crisis that has emerged at the club. Moreover, losing a player like Carlos Bacca can hurt any side. In any case, Sevilla showed no signs of their league form in their performance against Borussia Moenchengladbach. The Spanish side were in command of the game from the first minute and dispatched of them rather easily. Like Juventus, a result in their favor can put them in control of this difficult group.

Probable formations –

Juventus (3-5-2): Buffon; Barzagli, Bonucci, Chiellini, Cuadrado, Lemina, Khedira, Pogba, Evra; Dybala, Morata.

Today in his pre-match press conference Massimiliano Allegri announced this starting eleven. Due to Stephan Lichtsteiner’s breathing problems and Martin Caceres’ car accident that got him suspended from the side, Juventus were left without an option on the right hand side of defense. As a result, the Juventus boss opted for the 3-5-2 formation with Cuadrado and Evra flanking the side. In defense, the usual trio of Barzagli, Bonucci and Chiellini will start. Up front, we will likely see the duo of Dybala and Morata after the injury to Mario Mandzukic and Simone Zaza’s lack of form.

Sevilla (4-2-3-1): Rico; Coke, Andreolli, Kolodziejczak, Tremoulinas; Krychowiak, N’Zonzi; Reyes, Iborra, Krohn-Dehli; Gameiro.

Unai Emery’s hand has also been forced due to injuries. In goal, Rico will play for the injured Beto while Andreolli and Kolodziejczak will start at the heart of defense in place of Adil Rami and Daniel Carrico. Ever Banega and Fernando Llorente will also miss the trip to Italy. In their place, N’Zonzi and Gameiro are expected to play. Moreover, there are a few doubts going into tomorrow’s game about Krohn-Dehli’s spot in the starting eleven. He is currently vying for a spot against Konoplyanka.

Player to watch – Alvaro Morata

Tomorrow represents an important match for both Juventus and Morata. Should the Italian champions win, they will be in command of group D. For Morata, on the other hand, a goal would equal the record of a certain Alessandro Del Piero. He was quite good, wasn’t he? A goal against the Spaniards would mean that the former Real Madrid man has scored in five consecutive Champions League games. Over the course of that streak, the forward has scored against Real Madrid, (both legs) Barcelona and Manchester City. Not bad. In many ways, Morata is Juventus’ Mr. Champions League. It seems that the bigger the occasion, the better he plays. Tomorrow should be no different as I fully expect Morata to cause Sevilla’s injured defense all kinds of problems. His pace on the counter alongside Dybala can prove a lethal combination in a tight game. In addition to this, Cuadrado should be able to offer the Spaniard adequate supply from the wing. Even if he is not among the goalscorers tomorrow, Morata will play a decisive role in the game one way or another.

Notable comments –

Buffon: “When you look at our team and the fact that players in key areas have departed then, yes, we need time to gel, but we still should have made a stronger start to the season. I expect a difficult match, as Sevilla’s form in Europe would indicate. While they’re not firing on all cylinders at the moment in La Liga, they claimed a comprehensive win against Borussia Monchengladbach, even if that might have been a much more even affair.”

Allegri: “Both teams have got off to poor starts in their respective championships, but in the Champions League they beat Borussia while we won in Manchester, so it will be an evenly-poised fixture. We’ve turned in three strong performances to date: in Shanghai, Manchester and Genoa. These need to become the norm.”

Krychowiak: “We’ve got plenty of confidence following our win over Rayo and we’re looking to translate that into a positive result tomorrow night.”

Emery: ” I believe strongly in the qualities of my players. We’re all pulling in the same direction at the moment and there’s an excellent mentality in our dressing room. We had a fantastic experience in Turin last time out but now we’re in different circumstances. We’re here to enjoy the occasion and to make the most of the opportunity to play in the Champions League.”

Roma, Garcia on loss to Bate: “We made too many mistakes”

Roma lost to Bate 3-2 yesterday in Champions League matchday 2. Coach Rudi Garcia felt Roma merited a point despite playing badly in the first half.

With the loss Roma drops to the bottom of their group but are only 2 points behind second place Leverkusen, whom they face next.

Courtesy of asroma.it here is a recap of the coach’s comments after the match.

Do you regret the team’s first half performance?
“Obviously we got it wrong in the first 45 minutes. Maybe we lacked balance because we conceded three goals from the same flank, then Torosidis came on and sorted things out. We were punished by BATE’s clinical finishing and their touch of good fortune. The ball went in off the crossbar for them, whereas the same didn’t happen with Florenzi’s effort. We didn’t deserve to win tonight but we did enough for a point. In the second half we did all we could to get one. In the end, however, we’re only two points off second place thanks to Barcelona’s win and our aim is to make it through the group.”

Is this result a concern in terms of your hopes of qualifying?
“The first five minutes went well tonight but the team fell to pieces after their goal, before we straightened things out in the second half. We played badly in the first period and that’s our fault, mine too.”

Are Roma missing something?
“We were a little short on numbers tonight. I thought I was picking my best team from an attacking perspective but, as I’ve said, I got things wrong because the side lacked shape. We’re not consistent enough in certain matches, like at Sampdoria, we make too many mistakes. The team showed good mental strength to respond and this is only Matchday Two of the Champions League. There are still four games to play and we’ll have to get a result at Leverkusen to qualify.”

How do you assess your team’s tactical display?
“We lost too many challenges in the first half, whereas we won them all after the interval. We didn’t show enough fight in the opening 45 minutes, we weren’t aggressive. That’s our own fault, as I’ve said, but we had enough chances to come away with a point despite conceding three goals.”

Florenzi sites “wrong mental approach” to BATE loss

Roma utility man Alessandro Florenzi spoke to RomaTV following the shock 3-2 loss to BATE Borisov in the UEFA Champions League.

Lamenting the approach to the game, Florenzi refused to say Roma deserved at least a point in Belarus.

Alessandro, would a tie have been a fair result?

“I don’t know if we’d have deserved a draw. Us players got our mental approach wrong. We saw a different Roma side in the second half, but we all need to have another look at our performance, myself included.”

What do you put it down to?
“It wasn’t complacency or overconfidence. I believe we’re better than BATE Borisov and had we prepared better, the match would have ended positively for us and badly for them. The fact is we began the game in the wrong frame of mind, otherwise we would never have conceded twice in the space of 10 minutes.”

Why did you they catch you out down the right?
“We didn’t read the game well. They attack very effectively down the left and we knew that. Despite that however, we weren’t able to take appropriate action. It’s our own fault.”

What makes it so hard for this team to achieve consistency?
“If we knew the answer to that, I wouldn’t be here describing my disappointment at the defeat. We have to improve in that area because ultimately we lost the match upstairs, in that our minds were still in the dressing room in the first half. Then you start to feel it in your legs too.”

Qualification is still on, you mustn’t get downbeat…
“Yes, but we know that we could have played better tonight, we wanted to win the match. You shouldn’t have to react in the second half because the very need for a response shows you made mistakes in the first place. Either way, we focus on the here and now and look forward.”

Roma Embarrassed By BATE

Roma traveled to Belarus tonight, facing league winners BATE Borisov.

Despite travelling with an injury ridden squad, the Giallorossi were with high hopes of securing a win against the group minnows.

Two weeks ago, the Stadio Olimpico rose to celebrate a wonderful Alessandro Florenzi strike. He scored the equaliser, earning Roma an admiral point, against their toughest group opponents, Barcelona.

The Roma fans who traveled to Belarus tonight, suffered a slightly different set of emotions.

Once again Florenzi cemented his place in the highlight show, this time only to see his exquisite strike crashing off the bar.

It would have been a wonderful equaliser. Florenzi nearly made it 3-3 on the night. It would have rescued Roma a valuable point.

While the way Roma fought back is admirable, the shocking 3-0 deficit was a mere consequence of their utter incompetence.

There was something in the air prior to this fixture, Roma struggling felt inevitable.

The absences of Dzeko, Totti and Keita amongst others was a factor, however, with this accounted for anything but a victory was inexcusable.

garcia lol

Deja Vu: BATE defeated Garcia’s Lille side in the 2012/13 edition of the Champions League.

How it happened.

It took 30 minutes.

From Stasevich’s very fortunate opener, to Mladenovic’s impressive brace, Roma’s fate was sealed in just half an hour.

BATE breached the Roman defence and a scramble in the box lead to a tap in for Stasevich.

A horrific misjudgment by Wojciejch Sczecney lead to BATE’s second. His strange position in goal terrifically punished.

BATE’s third was their best. Clearly a team thriving on Roma’s naivity, Mladenovic finished sublimely to net his second of the night – impressive for their left-back.

The resilience

Roma did fight back.

A positive start to the second half was eventually rewarded. Gervinho pulled one back after some intricate play and darting run saw him latch onto Falque’s pass.

Dignie’s cross into the box then lifted the travelling Roma fans from their seats, as substitute Torosidis shoveled it into the net. 3-2 with eight minutes to play.

Then came Florenzi. His strike left the bar shaking. It wasn’t meant to be.

In-form Mohamed Salah was misfiring. First a succulent Miralem Pjainc pass found him free in the box, but his weaker right foot produced a tame finish.

Pjanic then found the Egyptian again, this time on his stronger left foot, with the goal gaping it seemed a certain that he would score – He missed the target.

Vainqueur, who replaced the injured Keita vs Carpi, along with Iturbe were virtually ineffective.

Neither lasted more than 45 minutes and watched the second half from the bench.

Falque’s introduction was a positive one, and Roma looked more dangerous, but they clearly lacked a striker tonight – a match which screamed for ‘Edin Dzeko’.

Where it leaves Roma?

Nothing is over yet.

Roma still have to play Bayer Leverkusen twice (next two matches). These were always going to be pivotal fixtures.

The German side fell to a 2-1 defeat in Spain meaning they sit only two points ahead of Garcia’s side, with both sides next two group fixtures being against each-other.

What is worrying; the psychological repercussions of this defeat.

Roma’s mental strength has been questioned before. Serie A fans will remember what the humiliation from Bayern Munich did to Roma’s form last year.

While this type of defeat is completely different, but one which could be just as detrimental.

It’s still early in the season, but the next couple of weeks could well shape Roma’s season, and Rudi Garcia’s future.

Roma will look to bounce-back with victory against Palermo in the league, this Sunday.

Juventus, Buffon: “The fact that players in key areas have departed…”

Juventus are on the eve of their second Champions League fixture of the campaign.

They take on Spanish side Sevilla, who are also struggling in their domestic league.

Speaking to media at the Stadium, Juventus captain Gianluigi Buffon started his conference by saying: “Tomorrow we need a well-balanced Juventus, fully concentrated for the 90 minutes. We have an opportunity to have a big say in deciding affairs at the top of the group.

“We also know that a victory can erase recent form in an instant and so we’re very focused on securing the three points for several reasons.

“When you look at our team and the fact that players in key areas have departed then, yes, we need time to gel, but we still should have made a stronger start to the season.

“We’re the first to acknowledge that. But it’s no good dwelling on the past, we need to focus on the present, while also staying ambitious with regards to the future.”

Turning his attentions to Wednesday’s opponents, Buffon stressed that Unai Emery’s men would make for a good, hard-fought game, but was also quick to reinforce the Bianconeri’s own strengths, which were in full evidence in their 2-1 triumph at Etihad Stadium two weeks ago.

And the 37-year-old insisted that he and his team-mates had to find a higher level of consistency in their performances than those shown in a mixed beginning to the current campaign.

“I expect a difficult match, as Sevilla’s form in Europe would indicate. While they’re not firing on all cylinders at the moment in La Liga, they claimed a comprehensive win against Borussia Monchengladbach, even if that might have been a much more even affair.

“This year is similar to the last in that we’ve demonstrated that we can give any team a good game. We went to Manchester City, who hadn’t conceded yet this season, but we ended up putting in our best display of the campaign so far.

“This goes to show that the quality and potential are all there, but we need to find a way of adding consistency to our results. When you’re fortunate enough to play for a big club, the only problem lies in always being able to live up to the expectations.”

Angelo Domenghini: Disappointing Inter, Juve still favorites.

Two-time Serie A champion with Inter and once with Cagliari, Angelo Domenghini commented on this Serie A season in an interview with TMW.

Easy question: Who wins the scudetto?

It seems to me that this is a year full of surprises, but Juventus is still the favorite.

Mancini’s Inter?

I was disappointed with the formation utilized against Fiorentina. This trident Mancini uses is absurd. You cannot have these three players so high up the pitch lined up with each other. This is leaves space open which obviously exposed Inter’s midfield. Fiorentina had so much initiative during the match because the Inter departments were far apart from each other.

So, Inter was elongated and spread out, then.

The long ball play is fine, but the way Inter played the long ball, was disappointing. The difference is tactical, in the choices of the managers. The trident that played a high line the whole match was what ultimately penalized Inter.

How do you see the title holders?

Juventus started badly because they lost Tevez and Vidal, they’re missing them. It’s the same rules as last year, though; If you’re going to win, you have to score goals.

Do you like Fioretina’s chances?

I’ll say that, in the meantime, I like Maurizio Sarri’s Napoli. Fiorentina’s Paulo Sousa certainly gave us an interesting game, with players that have proved functional and better than most names at Juventus and Inter. It may be their year, but it also could be Napoli or even Torino’s season.

Legrottaglie: Allegri Untouchable, the fans know it

Current Akragas (Lega Pro) coach and former Juventus defender Nicola Legrottaglie spoke to Tuttomercatoweb.com on Juventus’ and coach Massimiliano Allegri’s current situation.

“It seems strange that all this is happening at Juventus. It would be ridiculous to think about firing the coach who, last year, did almost double of what had been done before- I think you’d be delusional. I believe Juventus fans are so mature and wise enough to not fall into the media trap formed around Allegri. They must be compacted around the team and push them forward to make their mark on the league. Maybe this year will be tougher domestically, but they will do well in the Champions League, where Juve is still, obviously, very competitive. I would recommend the fans to be calm, continue to praise and encourage their great players all together.”

CONFIRMED: Lichsteiner out against Sevilla

Juve right-back Stephan Lichtsteiner is unavailable for the bianconeri in the Champions League tomorrow.

The Juve man trained without any problems yesterday but is now considered out against Sevilla.  Juve’s medical staff has prepared to further investigate the cardio-logical  symptoms that arose for the Swiss at the weekend against Frosinone.

Despite earlier reports from SKY indicating that the Swiss international was available, it seems he has been unable to recover from “breathing difficulties” which hospitalized him last week.

Montoya unhappy at Inter – Back to Barca in January?

Martin Montoya remains one of the big question marks for Inter’s Roberto Mancini

So much so that in January he could go back to Barcelona, according to FcInterNews.

The same news outlet continues saying that Mancini may have asked for, ahead of January, a new reinforcement for the right side of the defense.

Mancini doesn’t want just any player, but one who fits the needs of the group and who could enter the roster as a top player in the role.

This means, that for Jacopo Sala who has been linked with a move to Inter, the possibility of his arrival is beginning to lose steam.

A concrete name has been yet to be identified, but it looks increasingly certain that Montoya will find himself back in Catalonia long before the duration of his two year loan deal is completed.

Juventus’ Potential XI vs Sevilla: Stephan Lichtsteiner Returns

Simone Padoin out – Stephan Lichtsteiner back in, and a formation change is the medicine Allegri is prescribing for Juventus.

Ailing after another defeat in Serie A, their third in the first six games in the league, the Old Lady is needing to come up with a trick up her sleeve to grab all three points in the Champions League.

In what seems like an alternate universe for this year’s Juventus, the Bianconeri have failed to win a game at home. Losing to Udinese, and draws to Chievo Verona and new boys Frosinone respectively.

There is good news for Juventus, as not only Lichtsteiner, but Sami Khedira has finally returned to first team training, it is uncertain whether he will be fit enough to play against the reining Europa League champions.

Italian players in England: How did they fare this weekend?

In a new weekly feature here on Italian Football Daily, we take a look at the weekend performances of Italian players currently based in the top two divisions in England.

ENGLISH PREMIER LEAGUE

Matteo Darmian (Manchester United)

Darmian played the full 90 minutes of Manchester United’s home game against Sunderland, although in the left back position rather than his customary right back slot. The former Torino player had started the season well, but has suffered a slight dip in form over the past few games. He was back to form however in this game, helping United to a comfortable 3-0 win over Sunderland.

Fabio Borini & Vito Mannone (Sunderland)

Borini started for Sunderland for the second game in a row, as Dick Advocaat opted to give the Bentivoglio born player a further chance in the central striker role after Sunderland’s midweek League Cup defeat to Manchester City. Up against a Manchester United defence boasting one of the best defensive records in the Premier League, Borini struggled to make any significant impact in a 3-0 defeat.

After their 4-1 defeat at home to Manchester City in the League Cup, Mannone was dropped to the bench by Advocaat and did not feature in this fixture.

Graziano Pelle (Southampton)

Pelle continued his excellent form this season in Southampton’s 3-1 win at home to Swansea. Although the Azzurri squad regular failed to add to the six goals he has scored during this campaign, Pelle provided the assists for the Saints’ second and third goals and created several other chances with some excellent link-up play.

Angelo Ogbonna (West Ham United)

Ogbonna did not make West Ham’s match day squad for this fixture.

Alessandro Diamanti (Watford)

Although Diamanti was named on the substitute bench for Watford’s home game against Crystal Palace, he did not make an appearance despite the Hornets’ inability to unlock the Palace defence. The game ending 1-0 to the away team.

ENGLISH CHAMPIONSHIP

Federico Macheda (Cardiff City)

As has been the case for each league game this season, Macheda did not make Cardiff’s match day squad.

Diego Fabbrini (on loan from Watford) & Michael Agazzi (Middlesbrough)

Fabbrini started Middlesbrough’s game at home to Leeds United on the substitute bench, however he came on with 35 minutes left and scored the final goal as ‘Boro sealed a comfortable 3-0 win.

Agazzi did not feature in this fixture.

Mirco Antenucci, Giuseppe Bellusci, Marco Silvestre & Tommaso Bianchi (Leeds United)

As stated above, Leeds United visited promotion hopefuls Middlesbrough, but crashed to a 3-0 defeat, with Antenucci, Bellusci & Silvestre all starting the game. Antenucci put in a good performance coming close to scoring on several occasions, and had a goal disallowed midway through the first half that probably should have stood. Despite conceding three goals, Silvestre also had a good game, making some excellent saves that gave scoreline a semblance of respectability. Bellusci was less convincing however, heading the ball past Silvestre in the 32nd minute to give Middlesbrough a 2-0 lead.

Bianchi is not yet deemed to have fully recovered from surgery on his knee back in July, and was not selected for the match day squad.

Fernando Forestieri (Sheffield Wednesday)

Forestieri missed Sheffield Wednesday’s 2-1 win away at Brentford, having suffered a slight hamstring injury in Wednesday’s 3-0 win over Fulham last weekend. The Italy U-21 international is expected to return in time for Wednesday’s home game against Preston North End next weekend.

Francesco Pisano (Bolton Wanderers)

Pisano made his debut for Bolton Wanderers in their 2-2 draw at home to Brighton & Hove Albion. Pisano put in a solid performance as Wanderers came back from a two goal deficit, clutching a draw with a last-minute equaliser from Gary Madine.

Gabriele Angella (Queens Park Rangers – on loan from Watford)

Angella played the full 90 minutes as Queens Park Rangers suffered a 4-0 hammering away to Fulham. Angella was at fault for Fulham’s opening goal in the 2nd minute as he failed to challenge Moussa Dembele, allowing Dembele to power a downward header past QPR goalkeeper, Robert Green. Fulham’s fourth goal also came from an error from Angella, who was beaten in a 50/50 challenge shortly before McCormack fired past the helpless Green.

Diego De Girolamo (Sheffield United)

De Girolamo did not feature in Sheffield United’s match day squad for their 3-1 win over local rivals, Doncaster Rovers.

The Giovinco Watch, #5

Sept. 26, BMO Field, Toronto
TFC 3, CHICAGO 2 (Att.:22,513)

Match Report:

With a come-from-behind 3-2 victory over the visiting Chicago Fire, Toronto FC maintained its hold on fifth place in the Eastern Conference standings and drew nearer to the club’s objective of securing a first ever MLS playoff spot. Meanwhile, Sebastian Giovinco continued his ascension towards the MLS MVP award in his debut season in the league by contributing two assists to give him 16 on the year. Combined with his 19 goals this season, Giovinco established a new record for total individual goals and assists, 35, breaking the old mark of 34 set by San Jose’s Chris Wondolowski three years ago.
The day didn’t start off well for TFC, however, who found themselves down a goal just 40 seconds into the match when Giovinco’s strike partner, US international Jozy Altidore, lost possession of the ball at the midfield stripe and the Fire broke quickly on a counterattack with former TFC striker Gilberto slipping in between the Reds’ two centre backs, Damien Perquis and Josh Williams, to score past TFC keeper Chris Konopka.
Giovinco immediately set about trying to even the score as, in the 4th minute, he collected a throw-in from Marky Delgado in the attacking zone, then cut towards the centre and struck a left footed shot from the top of the box that just missed the mark to the right of Fire keeper Jon Busch.
TFC’s play in the early stages of the match was erratic and sloppy and Greg Vanney’s side frequently turned the ball over to a Fire team that was intent on cutting off the host club’s passing lanes and serving the Brazilian Gilberto and veteran MLS forward Mike Magee with quick-strike outlets. But midway through the first half, TFC started to gain dominance in possession and the momentum began to sway in their favour.

In the 29th minute, a long outlet pass from captain Michael Bradley invited Giovinco to run into space to collect the ball. Fire defender Daneil Cyrus was first to it but the Atomic Ant’s harrassment forced Cyrus to give up a corner kick. On the resulting corner, Giovinco’s inswinger came off the head of Perquis and fell right back onto his right foot. From a near impossible angle, Seba struck the ball with the outside of his foot, it lofted over the head of Busch and nestled into the back of the net just inside the far post. Initially, the goal was credited to Giovinco but TV replays seemed to suggest that Canadian international Jonathan Osorio just skimmed the ball with his head before it crossed the goalline. The goal would have been Seba’s 20th which would have made him the first player in MLS history to reach 20 goals and 10 assists in one season. In his post-match comments, Osorio wouldn’t confirm or deny that he actually touched the ball but invited MLS headquarters to review the play and award the goal to Giovinco.
“I think the record was going to be broken anyways but he deserves for it to be broken today,” said the modest, unassuming Osorio.
“It takes a special quality to pull off something like that so it wasn’t a set-up, it was a goal and I think he took it very well.”
“I think the intention,” said Vanney, “was to put it over the goalkeeper and try to get guys to attack the goal or the goalkeeper. He’s not the biggest in the league, Jon Busch. He’s a very good goalkeeper but to hang one up over his head and hope for the best, whether that means the back post or somebody crashing in and getting a piece of it, I think the intention was a very good one. We might as well give him credit for it. He’s done a lot of amazing things over the course of the year so we might as well say he meant it and nobody would argue that too much.”

Credited with the assist, Giovinco officially equaled the mark set by Wondolowski. He came close to scoring on at least two more occasions before halftime but Busch was alert on each attempt.
Seven minutes into the second half, the TFC defense was again unlocked as Gilberto split the two central defenders once more and cashed in with a shot that beat Konopka, banking into the net off the inside of the near post.
But just seven minutes after that, TFC were again level. Giovinco dispossessed a Fire player at midfield and quickly laid the ball off to Bradley who galloped to the edge of the box where Giovinco, having continued his run, drew three defenders with him, allowing Bradley to step into the space that Seba vacated before firing into the net past Busch.
“We have a good feel for each other, a good relationship,” said Bradley after the match. “We have had that all year long. Certainly, when Jozy’s in there, the three of us have found good ways to move together and play together. It’s important in the attacking part of the field. We’re able to combine with each other, find each other in little spaces and begin to create some different opportunities from there.”
Ten minutes later, Giovinco’s over-aggressive challenge forced a Fire defender into the advertising boards beyond the end line, prompting referee Ismail Elfath to caution the Atomic Ant.
Then, in the 79th minute, Giovinco lifted another corner kick into the Fire goal area, the ball caromed off Altidore before the TFC striker bundled it into the net on a second effort to score the home side’s go-ahead goal. Initially credited with an assist, which would have been his third of the game, Giovinco’s name was suspiciously removed from the official scoresheet distributed at the end of the match.
When it was all said and done, however, Giovinco had, in fact, set a new league standard, one that Vanney insisted puts Giovinco on another stratosphere.
“We’ve said it from early this year that he’s one of, if not, the best player to ever play in the league,” Vanney proclaimed. “I think reaching that mark is justification for some of those comments early on. He can do a lot of things. When we brought him here we knew he was a forward, he could play a little bit of attacking midfield in this league and what you see is just that, he can create and he can score. He’s obviously tilted a little more toward the forward side but he also created a lot of opportunities for other players hence the assists number.”
“To be fair,” continued Vanney, “he probably could have a couple more of each, but he’s a special player and it’s good to have him on our side. I think it’s also a tribute to the team and the team’s support of him. You don’t often see guys lead the league in goals and assists on teams that are not very successful. You have to have a good supporting cast, you have to have good people around you that can help you get those things done.”
Giovinco refused to provide any comments after the match but, having now secured a National Team call-up and set a MLS record, all that’s left for Seba to crown what has been a remarkable debut season is the MLS MVP award and that appears ever closer just as TFC appear to be closer to securing the first ever post-season berth in club history.

Giovinco’s key moments:

32nd – dribbles past defender, plays give-and-go with Osorio, tries to tuck in underneath Busch but Fire keeper lunges at ball which deflects off Seba’s leg and out for goal kick
44th – takes pass from Osorio, turns past defender, runs into box, shot is beaten away by keeper for corner.
59th – Bradley takes pass from Giovinco, then uses him as a decoy before dribbling into area and scoring goal (16th assist)

69th – earns yellow card for riding defender into end boards
72nd – fouled after high boot from Palmer; resulting free kick deflects off wall for corner
79th – takes corner – Altidore bundles ball into net on 2nd effort

Giovinco’s Key Stats: (via Opta Sports)

Total Shots = 8
Shots on Target = 3
Touches = 56
Total Passes = 20
Passing Accuracy = 80%

Giovinco’s Match Rating: 8.5

Interminable work rate, deceptive runs, close ball control, a willingness to strike at goal from any angle and another moment of dazzling brilliance resulting in a goal (which may yet end up being credited to him). The only flaw in his match, the yellow card for a bit of unnecessary petulance, but another outstanding performance from the Atomic Ant who continues to gain plaudits as a unanimous choice for MLS MVP.

Fiorentina beats Inter, Sousa “We can take on anyone”

Fiorentina moves to the top of the Serie A table after defeating Inter 4-1 yesterday at Stadio Giuseppe Meazza.

Inter came into the match full of confidence having started the season winning five games in a row and only conceding one goal. However, the nerazzurri were penalized for a lacklustre start and Fiorentina took full advantage scoring three quick goals in the first 23 minutes. Just a few minutes later, la viola got a bonus as Joao Miranda was sent off in the 31st minute.

Paulo Sousa praised his players for their performance.

“Being here and working with this group is wonderful. We have continuity, playing well at the back as well as up front. There are teams which have invested a lot and have different goals than us, but I am not going to hold back and I continue to say that we can face anyone to win. We have the quality to face every match knowing we can win.”

Serie B week 5 round-up

Just like that its ended, the last unbeaten side in Serie B are no more. Livorno’s perfect start to the new season came to a screeching halt at the hands of Spezia on Saturday afternoon at the Armando Picci. The question was though could the chasing pack capitalise on the slip up.

We’ll have to wait to find out however because we do indeed start this round-up focusing on the Amaranto and their opponents the Aquilotti. Recent results have brought the feel good factor back into the hearts of the fans Christian Panucci’s team and that was evident in the passion they showed in the stands early on.

Yet despite their evident passion, their team was unable to replicate it out on the pitch. Things started well for the Tuscan side, but a lack of killer instinct in front of goal, something far from lacking till this point, saw them pass up a number of decent opportunities early on.

They were duly made to pay for this lack of prolificacy two minutes before the break when Mario Situm gave the visitors the lead. Good work down the left saw the ball perfectly cut back into the path of Situm who made no mistake with the finish.

Again as was the case in the first half, Livorno passed up chances to get back in it in the second. They did eventually find a leveller on 72 minutes. Christian Pasquato neatly stepped inside his man before drilling low and hard from outside the box into the bottom left corner.

Their 100% record may now have been looking shaky but at least they were looking as if they were going to keep their undefeated start to the season. That is until two minutes from time when former Siena and Catania player Emanuele Calaio tapped in at the back post to give Spezia a massive three points away to a fellow promotion contender.

Cagliari now find themselves sitting pretty at the top of the table after they beat Latina in Sardinia. It wasn’t easy going though for the Rossoblu who found the team from the province of Lazio worthy opponents.

Davide Di Gennaro gave the Islanders the lead after only two minutes with a magnificent curling effort from outside the area that sailed out of the reach of namesake Gennaro in the Leonialti net.

It could have been all so different however as barely 20 seconds before Latina came within inches of scoring when an effort cannoned off the post and in turn setting up the resulting counter attack in which the hosts scored.

The visitors were soon back on level terms, when on 18 minutes a corner from the right found the head of a completely unmarked Brosco who provided the finish. Cagliari though were determined to regain their lead and that they duly did on 29 minutes.

A corner from the left was chipped out to the edge of the box where it was met by the advancing Balzano who met it sweetly to volley into the bottom left corner. Latina however where not to be so easily brushed aside and on the hour mark once more drew level.

Ammari scoring from the edge of the area after the ball had been cut back. The day would belong to Cagliari in the end however, as nine minutes from time Niccolo Giannetti got his sides decisive third goal.

A cross from deep on the right was attacked by Giannetti who got there at the same time as Gennaro in the Latina goal but the forward was braver and did enough to divert the ball home.

In another of the higher profile matches from the weekend, Vicenza and Pescara played out a humdinger at the Stadio Menti. It was the Biancorossi who were presented with the chance to take the lead early on from the penalty spot. Only Firollo in goal was not to be beaten on this occasion as he stood his ground to save comfortably.

In fact, we had to wait until the second half to see the net finally bulge, but once one went in it opened up the floodgates. Again it was Vicenza gifted the chance to take the lead and this time they made no mistake.

Raicevic finishing from distance into the bottom right corner on 50 minutes. 16 minutes later the Delfini were back on level terms. Gianluca Lapadula the scorer in somewhat controversial circumstances. He challenged the keeper for a high ball which in most other situations would have been blown for a free out, but not in this and seemingly with either his back or shoulder diverted the ball in.

Pescara then took the lead 11 minutes from time Ledian Memushaj drilling home from just inside the area. There was still time for late drama however as six minutes into stoppage time the Lane were handed another penalty, which this time was dispatched with aplomb by Gatto to give his side a share of the spoils.

As for the highest scoring match of the weekend that was found in Sicily as Serse Cosmi’s Trapani side continued their unbeaten start to the campaign with a four-two win over Virtus Entella.

Scozzarella got the Granata off the mark from the penalty spot on 22 minutes before Troiano levelled for the visitors ten minutes before the break. Two minutes into stoppage time at the end of the first half however Trapani retook the lead, Barilla finding himself totally unmarked in the middle to head home.

It was three-one not long past the hour when Citro raced through one on one before proceeding to produce a delightful dink over the advancing keeper. Entella did throw themselves a lifeline on 74 minutes when Petkovic coolly finished.

That lifeline was very quickly snuffed out by the hosts three minutes later when Citro scored his second to seal a four-two win for the Granata.

On Sunday evening Bari got back to winning ways at home to an Avellino side who have made a disappointing start to the season under Attilo Tesser. Marino Defendi gave the Galletti the lead on 13 minutes.

Roberto Insigne equalised for the Lupi only eight minutes later just managing to squeeze the ball home. 21 minutes from time though Guiseppe De Luca latched onto a perfect pass after making and equally excellent run before providing a top finish to round off an excellent goal. Two-one Bari it finished.

Elsewhere around the league Crotone continued their very impressive start to the season with a two-nil away win against Pro Vercelli, Stoian and Yao Guy with the goals. Salernitana overcame the manager less Ternana two-one despite playing over an hour with ten men.

Denilson Gabionetta continued his prolific start to the season with the winner in the 69th minute after Fabio Ceravolo had cancelled out a Franco opener for the hosts. Modena picked up their second win under Hernan Crespo, Daniele Galloppa the scorer with a fine volley five minutes from time to beat Virtus Lanciano.

Meanwhile Perugia’s somewhat poor start to the season continued as they drew nil all at home to Cesena and Ascoli and Brescia also drew nil-nil.

Pioli: “An excellent performance”

Lazio manager Stefano Pioli praised his players after a gritty 2-1 away win over Hellas Verona.

“It was an excellent performance from my team,” Pioli told Premium Sport.

“We didn’t deserve to trail, but we did well to come out with the victory. The players wanted this, we can now leave behind our recent setbacks. The games against Chievo and Napoli didn’t show our true ability.”

The Biancolesti went a goal down when Filip Helander reacted fastest in the box after Juanito Gomez’s effort had hit the crossbar. Lucas Biglia equalised from the spot midway through the second half after Keita Balde Diao was felled by Jacopo Sala inside the penalty area. But just as it looked as if Pioli’s men would take the initiative, Brazilian defender was given a second yellow card nine minutes from time. However Le Aquille still found a winner in the dying moments. Captain Biglia laid the ball off from a free kick to Marco Parolo and he found the bottom corner to seal the three points.

Pioli said: “Biglia has quality and character, he helps the team tick over. The rest of the side did well, but the team is bumped up a level when you have components on the pitch like him.”

Mancini reacts to Inter’s loss at the hands of Fiorentina

Inter’s undefeated run comes to a halt thanks to Fiorentina on Sunday evening at the San Siro.

Falling to second place in the table, Mancini spoke to media post-match following his first loss of the season.

“After the first two goals the game was difficult. With Miranda being sent off the game was over, it’s one of those matches that start in a pre-determined way. We couldn’t do much, but Fiorentina did well and deserved to win.”

“With 10 men we made a few changes, starting with 4-4-1 to concede fewer goals but the game was already compromised. ”

Regarding his player performances:

“Tonight we did not see the usual Handanovic. On nights like these, everything goes wrong. There is little to say, with eleven men we may have been able to recover but after we became ten, it became much more difficult.”

“We lost this game but other opinions do not change what I think. Inter is a great team, we need to improve in all areas because at this stage of the season I do not believe there are any perfect teams.”

Milan Struggle With Antonio Conte In Attendance

With Milan traveling to take on Genoa at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris, Italy manager Antonio Conte observed from the stands. The former Juventus boss watched the Rossoneri fall 1-0 to the Rossoblu, giving Conte few positives to take home

Siniša Mihajlović and his men traveled to Genoa sitting on a two-match win streak with wins against Palermo and Udinese. Despite earning all six possible points, the club did not lock down each match with ease. The Rossoneri had to hold on for dear life against Palermo last week despite a brace by Carlos Bacca and in this past week’s fixture against Udinese, they nearly let a 3-0 lead slip through their fingers.

Azzurri manager Antonio Conte attended the early Sunday fixture between Milan and Genoa, hoping to sort out some questions he may have on some key players for his squad.

Mihajlović started Alessio Romagnoli, Mattia De Sciglio, Riccardo Montolivo, Andrea Bertolacci, Giacomo Bonaventura and Mario Balotelli. It certainly was a perfect opportunity for the former Juventus manager to survey some his players while also seeing who he should consider adding for the next international break.

Montolivo started in front of the defense, a position usually occupied by Nigel de Jong. He has been playing better as of late but today, as was the case for others, wasn’t his best performance. The 30-year old midfielder has stepped into a deeper role but has given Milan a bit more of a creative presence than the Dutch international.

Alessio Romagnoli has been playing for the U-21 side but it does not mean that he shouldn’t be trying to impress Conte. A solid campaign with Sampdoria last season, Romagnoli has been everything Milan could have hoped for when they shelled out a staggering 25 million euros for the young Italian defender. Against Genoa, it wasn’t his best performance as he was sent off after receiving a second yellow before the first half whistle sounded.

Bertolacci returned from injury and started from the jump for Milan. For the Italian, it was much of the same. Despite a stronger second half for the former Genoa midfielder in a more forward role, Mihajlović, Conte and the fans needed to see more consistency or else there is no reason for him to suit up for his country. Last season, Bertolacci performed extremely well which forced Milan’s hand to pay Roma 20 million euros in hopes of bringing that dynamic ability to a lackluster midfield. Moving forward, Bertolacci may be best playing in a more advanced role behind the strikers which could solve some of the creativity issues.

With the way Bonaventura is performing, it will be difficult for Mihajlović to pull the former Atalanta man from the playmaker role. “Jack” has been an invaluable asset this season, playing anywhere and everywhere when called upon. He was tried earlier in the season in the midfield but we have seen him shine behind the attackers. He shows great movement and looks composed on the ball. With Honda struggling to lock down the trequartista role, Bonaventura has proven that he is more than worthy of taking it for himself.

Mattia De Sciglio got the nod to start once again. The former Milan youth product didn’t do much to effect his role with Italy. He has been playing better this season which is encouraging but most think that there is another level he can reach in his game. Conte has shown that he knows who his primary fullbacks are in Darmian and De Sciglio based off his lineups over the last month against Malta and Bulgaria. The former Bianconeri manager would love to see the 22-year old take that leap forward and lock down a fullback position longterm.

Perhaps the most watched player on Sunday against Genoa was the Italian striker, Mario Balotelli. The former Liverpool flop had been ousted by Conte since his move back to England last summer, but has been given another chance to reclaim the number 9 kit for his country by moving back to Milan. The 25-year old has made a clear commitment to an improved attitude both on and off the pitch but Conte needs to see if Balotelli truly wants to change as a man through his play.

Conte looked on from the stands as Balotelli started in place of Bacca. The entire squad struggled so for Mario, he didnt get many chances in front of the goal to impress. His best opportunity came from a corner which he got his head on, unfortunately landing wide of the goal. But if you were to ask Antonio Conte what he really wanted to see from the former Inter striker, you can bet it was his body language, attitude and demeanor.

Balotelli has been tested often this season by the opposition, receiving knock after knock, but remaining composed. We have seen a different Mario on the pitch which is mutually beneficial to Milan and Italy as his attitude has always been the biggest concern with his game. Now that Balotelli appears to be maturing and allowing his performance speak for itself, there is no doubt Conte will be thinking hard about including the striker in his next call-up.

Against Genoa, Conte did not see the best of Milan. They struggled to handle a below average side on the road and several players did not show the Azzurri coach enough. However, we can assume that Bonaventura and Balotelli will be strongly considered for the next international round of fixtures. Both Bertolacci and Montolivo remain question marks for Italy while De Sciglio will have no issues of his own getting the call next month when Italy takes on Azerbaijan and Norway in the two final Euro Qualifying matches.
