Lazio manager Stefano Pioli praised his players after a gritty 2-1 away win over Hellas Verona.
“It was an excellent performance from my team,” Pioli told Premium Sport.
“We didn’t deserve to trail, but we did well to come out with the victory. The players wanted this, we can now leave behind our recent setbacks. The games against Chievo and Napoli didn’t show our true ability.”
The Biancolesti went a goal down when Filip Helander reacted fastest in the box after Juanito Gomez’s effort had hit the crossbar. Lucas Biglia equalised from the spot midway through the second half after Keita Balde Diao was felled by Jacopo Sala inside the penalty area. But just as it looked as if Pioli’s men would take the initiative, Brazilian defender was given a second yellow card nine minutes from time. However Le Aquille still found a winner in the dying moments. Captain Biglia laid the ball off from a free kick to Marco Parolo and he found the bottom corner to seal the three points.
Pioli said: “Biglia has quality and character, he helps the team tick over. The rest of the side did well, but the team is bumped up a level when you have components on the pitch like him.”
