Tomorrow’s fixture puts first placed Inter up against second placed Fiorentina.
While the former has been criticized of playing poorly, the latter has been complimented for the opposite.
Both have achieved applaudable starts to the 2015/16 Serie A season.
MANAGER QUOTES:
Roberto Mancini
“I am not interested if someone says we play badly, as I am capable of judging our own performances”
“I don’t think any team can be considered perfect… We can improve everything”
“A win streak means nothing if you don’t achieve something important at the end”
“Fiorentina are very dangerous in attack. We’ll need to make the most of chances we get”
Paulo Sousa
“We have different idea’s of football (Inter and Fiorentina)”
“Inter have a midfield that does not only have intensity and quality, but also a strong physical presence and great maturity”
“Inter will undoubtedly be under more pressure to win”
With last season’s top three sides (Juventus, Roma & Lazio) all enduring shaky starts to this season, both Fiorentina and Inter Milan have an invaluable opportunity to capitalise.
Fiorentina are offered the opportunity of replacing Inter Milan at the top of Italy with a victory at the San Siro.
HEAD 2 HEAD
[Inter 14 wins // Fiorentina 4 wins (3 draws shared)]
Inter dominate the history of these two clubs, since Fiorentina’s return to the top flight in 2004.
However, Fiorentina prove how often these statistics should be taken lightly.
They successfully completed a league double over Inter Milan last season (14/15) without conceding a single goal (1-0 & 3-0).
CURRENT FORM:
Inter Milan – WWWWW
A surprise to some, expected by many – despite a hideous pre-season Inter have come out of the blocks flying for the 2015/16 campaign.
Five wins from five – Mancini’s men are yet to drop a point this season.
Facing stiff opposition along the way, Inter have handed Atalanta and fellow high-flying Chievo their only defeats of this season so far – whilst also beating bitter rivals Milan in the derby.
What’s most notable is the improvement in defence. Inter have only conceded once in their opening five games – demonstrating a vast improvement from last season’s defensive frailties.
Fiorentina – WLWWW
The saga of Mohamed Salah plagued Fiorentina’s summer, eventually joining rivals Roma. While the Egyptian’s departure appeared to be a large dent in Fiorentina’s plans, it has yet to hinder their progress.
Instead Fiorentina have reacted positively to losing arguably their most talented player– sitting second after five matches, only losing once.
What’s even more impressive is that La Viola have racked up four(!) clean sheets in the process.
What is questionable? Fiorentina’s quality of opponent so far.
The impressive victory against Milan aside, Fiorentina have beaten three of the current bottom four sides, including two newly promoted teams – Bologna and Carpi.
Inter will provide a completely different test.
WRITER’S PREDICTION
With both sides having great campaigns defensively, it’s hard to see a flurry of goals in Milan tomorrow.
I expect Inter’s powerful squad to face up to tomorrows challenge and cement their rejuvenation.
Inter Milan 2-0 Fiorentina (Icardi, Ljajic).
