Milan, Mihajlovic’s Pre-Match presser before Genoa

AC Milan head coach Sinisa Mihajlovic spoke to the press on the eve before the Rossoneri’s clash with Genoa.

Opening comments from Mihajlovic: “We’re focused ahead of the match and we know it would make the President happy if we could give him an early present.(Silvio Berlusconi celebrates his birthday on the 29th of September, editor’s note) Every match is important for us and a win would give us more confidence ahead of the next match with Napoli. We’re going to Genoa with an attacking approach and to score goals.”

On his options in attack with Balotelli, Bacca and Luiz Adriano: “All three can play together. Mario had a good game against Udinese, but he needs to play more through the middle as opposed to out wide. With all the qualities he has, he can present more of a danger and be of greater use to the team by playing more centrally.”

The coach added: “The second half performance against Udinese was of some concern, but we came away with a win when the match could have ended in a draw. We need to learn how to manage those situations better. De Jong is an important player for us and he brings charisma and character. We haven’t had much time to train, but we have analysed our mistakes which were more individual than team related. We need to be strong in attack but also at the back in defence.”

Mihajlovic set his sights on a top-three finish and answered a question about Balotelli: “Milan is Milan and our objective is to try and qualify for the Champions League. Then, when you reach those heights, you can think about aiming for the Scudetto. I am pleased that Mario is doing well on and off the pitch. For now he is doing what I expect of him, but it’s only been a month, we need to wait and see. As a man however he has grown and as a result also as a player. He needs to act like a professional and be consistent with his performances.”

A word on another Italian on the score-sheet in the last match: “Bonaventura for me can play as a wide midfielder or behind the strikers. We will see with each match what is the best solution. After starting the match versus Empoli on the bench, he has played well. We have lots of options behind the strikers.”

Riccardo Montolivo joined his coach in praising the performances of Bonaventura lately while looking ahead to the match with Genoa:“Bonaventura has a keen eye for goal and is an important player for the team. Every season it is tough playing at Genoa because of the atmosphere at the stadium and for the quality of their players. They will be determined to bounce back after recent results. Our squad this season is eager to get back on track, play well and show what we’re capable of.”

The vice-captain Nigel De Jong commented on the last match won 3-2 at Udinese and which saw him play in a wider midfield position than his usual role sitting in front of the defence: “Against Udinese, I played in a different position in midfield than I am used to, but I liked it and I think that I played well.”
