Pioli: “The team has the will to react”

Lazio remain unbeaten at home after a 2-0 shut out against Genoa.

Arguably the most erratic team in the Serie A, Lazio welcomed Genoa to Stadio Olimpico for the mid-week fixture this evening. The situation was familiar, home game following a devastating road defeat. Once again Lazio prevailed, this time in an aggressive affair that left Genoa reduced to 9 men.

The capital club took the lead on a Filip Djordevic goal ten minutes before half. Twelve minutes into the second half Issa Cissokho received his second yellow card, leaving Genoa short a man for the final third of the match. Lazio quickly took advantage and netted their second goal, this time from Felipe Anderson.

Following the match a much happier Stefano Pioli spoke to Radio Rai where he discussed the victory.

“The only thing that counted today was the victory and the spirit of the team. It was not a beautiful match but I saw determination and unselfishness. We wanted this victory and we obtained it. It was an important game to demonstrate that the team has the will to react and that could have their say.”

Pioli then went on to discuss roster management by saying:

“We are still missing important players, but the team is competitive and has always demonstrated this, except for last Sunday. We have the quality to do well; we want to return to China. We are playing every three days, I have to employ turnover in order to have meaningful performances from a physical and mental point of view.”

Lazio will hope to rectify their previous performance in Verona, this time against Hellas on Sunday September 27th. We will see if Pioli can find the right combination of players that can bring Lazio their first road victory of the season.
