Andrea Barzagli, who announced he would retire from international competition after the end of Italy’s run in the tournament was inconsolable after the loss.
“We really gave absolutely everything. Unfortunately what we’re left with is defeat and in my view nothing will remain of all the good things we did,” the Italy defender told Rai Sport. “It’s a shame all that remains is disappointment and in a few years nobody will remember anything about this Nazionale that truly gave everything. We really enjoyed our time together and wanted it to continue. We’re incredibly distraught.”
Italy fell to Germany on penalty kicks and are out of the tournament at the quarterfinals.
