Italy manager Antonio Conte received heat leading up to the European Championships for his squad selections. However, the ex-Bianconeri boss picked 23 fighters who left it all on the pitch despite bowing out in the quarter-finals. He spoke after the tough loss.
Antonio Conte, courtesy of the Azzurri Twitter account:
“I want to thank the boys. They were extraordinary for 2 years for me. They topped it off with this special experience. We tried and were able to make the fans proud of us. We made the players truly aware that it’s a privilege to wear the shirt. The world champions changed their system for us and that’s a reason to be proud. I feel sorry because these boys deserved to make the next round.”
“We overcame great obstacles, we were very close to achieving a great feat. A route has been set out. I will leave an important legacy which will allow for great things to happen.”
Conte, who will report to Chelsea pre-season camp in the coming weeks, has left the door open for a future return to the post for his country:
“It was an incredible feeling to be the Italy coach. I hope I can come back to this bench one day.”
