The Tuscan club escape a gut-wrenching return to Lega Pro after receiving approval for a License to compete in Serie B.
What was almost a 10 year wait to return Serie B following an emotional Lega Pro Playoff Final win, was close to being turned into a direct ticket back down to the third tier for Gennaro Gattuso’s Pisa. As first reported by Corriere dello Sport, Pisa had received some bitter news during their training for the upcoming season. Covisoc (responsible for the FIGC to register Italian clubs into their respective competitions) originally rejected their request for a national license which would admit them into Serie B.
The problem stemmed from the submission of a required bank guarantee. Pisa, who previously hoped to solve the issue, had made a formal announcement about their pending exclusion:
AC Pisa 1909 has received a negative communication from the part of Covisoc about the requested requirements for obtaining the National License necessary for admission into Serie B. The negative opinion concerns a mere defect relative to the required bank guarantee. To the extent permitted by Federal Law, the club will regularize their position.
This past Friday however, as reported by La Nazione, the club presented their bank guarantee from the Banca Montei dei Paschi di Siena for €800 thousand. On Tuesday, the verdict came in from Covisoc:
The Federal Council of the FIGC unanimously upheld the appeals of Pisa, Casertana, Maceratese, Lucchese and Siena, and voted by a majority for the non-acceptance of Paganese
The above statement meant that Pisa’s admission was accepted and they will be able to compete in Serie B this season.
