Napoli hosted a very formidable opponent in Lazio at the Stadio San Paolo on Sunday. Although ravaged by injury and a lack of match fitness, the Biancocelesti had bags of quality at their disposal, and yet Napoli ran out the stunning 5-0 victors. Here are three things we learned from the match:
- Maurizio Sarri has found his “perfect” formation. The 4-3-1-2 scheme has been used by Napoli manager Maurizio Sarri for the length of his reign so far, however on Sunday things changed. He used the 4-3-3 which, in many fans’ opinions, suits Napoli the best. The team had a perfect blend of attacking finesse and defensive ferocity. Napoli had been seeing too much of the former and not enough of the latter in their opening 3 games in the Serie A. Now, after two back to back 5-0 wins using the 4-3-3 formation, it is safe to say Napoli have found the perfect one.
- Outstanding defensive display from start to finish. Sarri’s defense has been under scrutiny for essentially all of his short time in charge. Between fan protests and a lack of money being shelled out to improve it in the summer really put a ton of pressure on Napoli’s new manager. However, against Lazio, Napoli were nothing short of extraordinary on the defensive side, only allowing one shot the entirety of the match. The defensive lineup of Hysaj, Albiol, Koulibaly, and Ghoulam looks to be Napoli’s best at its disposal.
- Napoli’s willingness was on display from the first minute to the ninetieth. A total performance was on display yesterday. Mistakes were very rare and every single player looked the part. Something Napoli has been lacking for much of the Benitez era onto the first three games of the 15-16 Serie A season. Not one player put a foot wrong against Lazio, and every player looked like they wanted more even though the game was done and dusted by the 60th minute. The players that stood out the most however were, Higuain, Insigne, Koulibaly and Allan. Man oh man what a signing Allan has been so far. We can only hope he keeps up his stellar form for the Partenopei.
All in all, if Napoli keep up their stellar form at the moment, they can really make a statement in the Serie A. If the fire keeps burning down at the mouth of Vesuvius, coaches are going to start losing many hours of sleep in the coming weeks…
