Napoli, Higuain “We must build on our first place lead”

Napoli forward and Serie A leading scorer Gonzalo Higuain spoke to Sky Sport following the Partenopei’s 2-1 victory against Inter which moved them into first place.

Higuain went on to talk about the special night at the Stadio San Paolo:

“It is a magical evening. I am happy for the fans and for us. I think it was deserved, you’re not always first. We have to suffer like we did today, every team goes through it.”

Il Pipita then went on to talk about Pepe Reina’s incredible save:

“Reina made an impressive save, we are very happy. They (Inter) defended themselves greatly. There is still time left in the championship, so we must build on our first place lead.”

Napoli, Allan “Higuain is a top player”

Following Napoli’s 2-1 win over Inter to move the Partenopei into first place, midfielder Allan had an interview with Radio Kiss Kiss Italia.

These were his comments:

“We played a great game until the 70th minute. They caused us great difficulty, but it is normal to suffer a bit since they are a good team. Now we must recharge and be ready for Sunday’s game. We are all happy knowing we played a great game, but there are so many matches left in the season. We must look to ensure continuity. We can think of important things, but we need to have our feet on the ground and be ready for the battle on Sunday.”

Allan on Higuain and his team:

“Higuain is a top player. Everyone wants to be able to play alongside him, but fortunately he is here with us at Napoli. We are a qualified team with important players and we are all following what Mr. Sarri asks of us. We enjoy the congratulations given to us by our President (Aurelio De Laurentiis). We have to continue playing like this and win.”

Napoli, Sarri “The players will hear it for those last twenty minutes”

Following his club’s 2-1 victory over Inter, coach Maurizio Sarri was content to get the victory, but was not pleased with the way his team played in the last minutes until the match’s end.

Sarri to Sky Sport: “I am glad to have given satisfaction and happiness to this wonderful audience, but starting tomorrow we go back to work. We must be good at not letting anything or anyone overcome us. After we went up 2-0, we gave them the match to win, then we conceded a goal and went into a panic and were confused mentally, making mistakes on things we usually do not do wrong.”

Sarri went on to talk about what the team would talk about in training tomorrow:

“The reason we could not hold the result better. We should always talk about things to improve. For those last twenty minutes the players will hear it from me.”

And on whether Higuain is human or a martian:

“It depends on him. If he takes another step forward, becoming more aggressive, then he is a martian.”

Ljajic: “We will wait for Napoli at San Siro!”

Adem Ljajic scored his first goal for Inter since joining in the summer, but it proved only a consolation as Inter stumbled to a 2-1 defeat to Napoli.

“I am happy how the team played and not only of what I did. I gave my all, just like my teammates. In the second half we played better, demonstrating we are a great team. We had bad luck, but that is football, what can you do?”

“Now we have to only think about our next match. We will wait for Napoli at San Siro, at a certain point they were afraid. I feel bad for Nagatomo, he didn’t merit being sent off.”

Higuain spearheads Napoli to a 2-1 victory over Inter Milan

Monday night’s fixture saw Napoli host Inter Milan in a top of the table clash at the Stadio San Paolo.

The match was very anticipated, and it lived up to all of the hype, starting off with a bang.  60 seconds into the game Higuain  pounced on an asleep Inter Milan defense and fired home giving the hosts a 1-0 lead.  What a great start to a huge match for the Partenopei.  As the half went on, Inter had numerous looks on goal however were misfiring at every chance. Napoli kept most of the possession whereas Inter used more gut and willingness to outdo Maurizio Sarri’s tactics.  Later on, Yuto Nagatomo was carded twice for reckless challenges and was ultimately kicked out of the match.  This went on to not only deplete Inter’s numbers in the match, it also (almost) ended up benefitting them oddly enough.

In the second half, Napoli were again the stronger of the two sides playing a commanding football, trying to double their lead.  In the 62′ Higuain pounced on a mistake by Miranda and Murillo to double the partenopei’s lead.  This was the turning point of the match.  Remember how it was said that the nerazzurri being down to 10 men almost ended up benefitting them? Well Napoli backed off a lot of their pressure for the most part of the last 25 minutes of the match, almost gifting Inter a point.  Ljajic scored on Inter’s first shot on target of the night in the 67′ to cut Napoli’s lead in half, what a rollercoaster ride of a finish was there in store for our viewing pleasure.  Inter almost came close to finding the equalizer twice in stoppage time. Once off of a Jovetic header that hit the post, then another in the dying moments where Miranda flicked on a beautiful Biabiany cross towards goal, however Reina was up to the task and parried it away giving Napoli a humongous 3 points, leapfrogging them into first place.

Mancini: “I believe that Napoli is the best team in the league”

Roberto Mancini spoke to the media this evening after Inter’s 2-1 defeat against Napoli, which saw them drop down to second place in the League.

On Napoli vs Inter

“It was a great match, an even match. I would have preferred winning but I believe that Napoli is the best team in the league. Unfortunately it was an ugly expulsion, absurd we have to suffer for it. There was an error in the evaluation, the first caution because of Callejon was a simulation, the second however Nagatomo could have been more careful knowing he already had a yellow card.”

Mancini went on to talk about Higuain:

“Higuain is an extraordinary player, it wasn’t easy scoring that first goal, he makes an enormous difference. We must not also forget about Reina, who made three incredible saves. Regarding our shots that hit the post, I thought one of them would go in. In conclusion: “We lost a tough match, however if Inter for 14 matches was at the top of the table it’s because we are doing something good.”

Fiorentina, Illicic “Contact with Acerbi merited a penalty”

Fiorentina striker Josip Ilicic spoke to Sky Sport following his team’s 1-1 draw with Sassuolo.

“We have played so many matches and its normal there is some fatigue. We played a good game eventhough we suffered in the second half. It is important we did not lose, now we must try to win the next match.”

Illicic then went on to discuss the missed penalty by the referee:

“The contact with Acerbi certainly merited a penalty, however the referee did not see it.”

Fiorentina, Bernardeschi “Sassuolo made life difficult for us”

Fiorentina midfielder Federico Bernardeschi spoke to Mediaset Premium following his team’s 1-1 draw with Sassuolo at Mapei Stadium.

“We did well, however Sassuolo has good players and play good football. The made life difficult for us, but we created two great scoring chances. The result is just, either team could have won the match but the draw is good. Its not easy to win here and we are satisfied with the result.”

Bernardeschi then went on to discuss the team’s physical condition.

“We are not tired, there are many matches left before the Christmas break and we are playing them giving our 100%. It is normal to have a drop in terms of physicality, but we make up for it with our quality. Our team is content.”

Fiorentina, Sousa “We paid for the energy spent on Thursday”

Fiorentina coach Paulo Sousa was bitter following his team’s 1-1 draw with Sassuolo.

Speaking with Sky Sport, here is what he had to say:

“I am disappointed, we paid for the energy spent last Thursday (in Europa League play vs Basel) and Sassuolo were better in the second half. It’s too bad we had the opportunity to go ahead 2-0 and then after the break we were tired and unable to anticipate our opponent. We had to do a better job managing our fatigue. We didn’t capitalize on our chances to extend our lead. The team worked hard, they made a strong effort. We had many fans in attendance and it made us very happy.”

Sousa went on to discuss how Giuseppe Rossi is doing:

“He is working to return to playing at his best. We want to help him and in order to do this it is important that he plays. He is a lad that needs help.”

Italians in England: The Weekend performances

In our weekly feature, here on Italian Football Daily, we take a look at the weekend performances of Italian players currently based in the top two divisions in England.

ENGLISH PREMIER LEAGUE

Claudio Ranieri (Manager – Leicester City)

Claudio Ranieri’s Leicester City were held to a 1-1 draw at home to Manchester United on Saturday evening. The result meant that Leicester slipped to second in the table, having last week held the top-spot for the first time in 13 years.

Matteo Darmian (Manchester United)

Matteo Darmian played the full 90 minutes at right wing-back in Manchester United’s 1-1 draw at Leicester City. The former Torino player put in a solid performance, although at times seemed to lack confidence and match sharpness due to having missed many of United’s games over the last month. Darmian did however come close to winning the game for United in the last minute, but his left foot shot from the edge of the box just went narrowly over.

Graziano Pelle (Southampton)

Graziano Pelle missed Southampton’s 3-1 defeat at Manchester City due to suspension having picked up his fifth yellow card of the season in the Saints’ 1-0 defeat at home to Stoke City last weekend.

Fabio Borini & Vito Mannone (Sunderland)

Both Fabio Borini and Vito Mannone were unused substitutes in Sunderland’s 2-0 victory over Stoke at the Stadium of Light.

Angelo Ogbonna (West Ham United)

Angelo Ogbonna put in an impressive performance in West Ham United’s 1-1 draw at home to West Bromwich Albion on Sunday afternoon. He and fellow centre-half, Winston Reid, looked likely to keep the West Brom attack at bay with ease, however Reid’s own goal on the 50 minute mark, cost The Hammers the three points they should have taken.

Alessandro Diamanti (Watford)

Alessandro Diamanti was, once again, an unused substitute in Watford’s 3-2 victory away at Aston Villa. Diamanti has hardly featured for The Hornets so far this season, and will likely look to return to Serie A in the January transfer window.

ENGLISH CHAMPIONSHIP

Fernando Forestieri (Sheffield Wednesday)

Sheffield Wednesday continued their excellent recent form recently, coming from 2-0 down to snatch a 2-2 draw at Blackburn Rovers. Although Forestieri showed much effort, he was not as influential as he has been over the past few weeks. Despite that, he did fire over a long range effort over the bar mid-way through the first half, before turning creator by providing a low cross which Gary Hooper was just unable to make contact with.

Diego Fabbrini (on loan from Watford) & Michael Agazzi (Middlesbrough)

Middlesbrough moved up to second place in the Championship after a 2-0 win away at Huddersfield Town. Diego Fabbrini played only 63 minutes of Boro’ victory, before being substituted after a subdued performance.

Once again, Michael Agazzi did not feature in Middlesbrough’s squad for this fixture.

Mirco Antenucci, Giuseppe Bellusci, Marco Silvestri & Tommaso Bianchi (Leeds United)

Massimo Cellino’s Leeds United suffered yet another defeat at the weekend, this time away at Queens Park Rangers 1-0.

Marco Silvestri, Mirco Antenucci and Giuseppe Bellusci all started the game, but were unable to inspire the Whites to a win. Shortly after half-time, Silvestre was beaten by a header from Charlie Austen from a QPR, a goal which turned out to be the winner. He did well, however, to keep the score at 1-0, making two excellent saves midway through the second half. Antenucci was substituted after 80 minutes after failing to make an impact on the game.

Francesco Pisano (Bolton Wanderers)

Francesco Pisano was not included in Bolton Wanderers’ squad for their game at home to Brentford on Monday evening.

Gabriele Angella (Queens Park Rangers – on loan from Watford)

Gabrielle Angella was an unused substitute in QPR’s 1-0 win at home to Massimo Cellino’s Leeds United.

Federico Macheda (Cardiff City)

Federico Macheda was a late substitute, and therefore had little time to make an impact in Cardiff City’s 2-2 draw at home to Burnley. The appearance was Macheda’s first for several months after finally recovering from surgery to repair a disc injury.

Diego De Girolamo (Sheffield United)

Diego De Girolamo once again missed out on selection for Sheffield United’s 1-1 draw away at local rivals, Barnsley.

Juventus’ Win Serves A Showcase To All Doubters

After a poor start to the season that had Juventus languishing in mid-table, the bianconeri have really come into their own and are now climbing up the standings.

Juventus’ convincing win against Palermo was their fourth in a row in league play and confirmed a good run of form for the Italian champions. While the win allows Juventus to win some ground on their rivals, it mostly served as a showcase to all doubters. It was quite fitting that Mario Mandzukic, Stefano Sturaro, and Simone Zaza, three players who have all come under heavy criticism earlier in the year, got their name on the scoresheet to gift their side the three points.

In addition, this game truly shows that when it comes to this Juventus side, Massimiliano Allegri knows best. The former Milan boss has seen many of his tactical decisions scrutinized over the year, especially in terms of team selection. In their mid-week game against Manchester City, Allegri’s decision to start Mandzukic over Alvaro Morata was ridiculed, only to see the former score the crucial goal in the game. Today, many called for Mandzukic to return to the bench again in favour of the Spaniard but thankfully Allegri didn’t listen and reaped the rewards. In the second half, the Croatian leaped over his marker and headed home Paulo Dybala’s inch-perfect cross. That would be all that Juventus would need on the night and was Mandzukic’s second winner in as many games.

After Mandzukic scored his goal, it was time for another player to silence his doubters. After a rather rough start to the season, Stefano Sturaro was yet another Juventus player to come under fire. Recently, however, the Italian has put in some stellar performances and is beginning to deliver on his promise. Considering Sami Khedira’s love affair with the treatment room, it was absolutely crucial for the former Genoa man to break through. Tonight against Palermo, the 22-year-old was easily the man of the match and added a goal to his Juventus account with a calm, left-footed finish. More importantly, he didn’t try doing too much which is a positive sign. Sturaro is now aware that it is up to Paul Pogba and Claudio Marchisio to dictate play and not him. Prior to this, the player would often overextend himself but it now appears that the burden of responsibility is off his shoulders. Moving forward, I can definitely see Sturaro carving out a spot in the starting eleven for himself.

Mandzukic and Sturaro scoring apparently wasn’t enough as a third juventino was determined to prove countless Juventus fans wrong. With just six minutes left in the game, Allegri subbed on Simone Zaza for Paulo Dybala. His introduction wasn’t greeted with cheers as Zaza isn’t exactly what you would call a fan favourite. After an energetic first few minutes on the pitch, the former Sassuolo man would get a chance to make his mark. With just ten seconds left in the game, Zaza received a pass in the box from Morata and dispatched his shot cooly to Stefano Sorrentino’s right. It was the player’s third goal on the season despite only starting three games. While the striker still has ways to go from a technical standpoint, the 24-year-old can certainly offer a spark off the bench like not many others in the team could.

When the ref blew the final whistle at the Renzo Barbera, the scoreboard really said it all: Three points courtesy of three players who have seen their every move criticized for the last few months. It’s also important to note that Giorgio Chiellini, who many were asking to be dropped in recent times, was solid at the back and played a major role in his side picking up their third consecutive clean sheet. For this reason, I urge Juventus fans to stop finding the negatives in every situation and actually trust their manager. The same manager who nearly won the treble in his first season. Is it too naive on my part to ask this? Probably but I guess I’m just an optimist.

Napoli and Inter go head to head in a top of the table clash

The two in-form teams in Serie A this season go head to head at the San Paolo, as Napoli face Inter.

It’s been said it’s a game of attack versus defence, with how both teams have set up this season under their managers and the League table has Inter and Napoli in first and second place.

League Form

Napoli WWDWW

13 points from their last 5 games has seen the Partenopei climb up the table to overtake Juventus, Milan, Roma and Fiorentina into second place.  Victories over Chievo, Palermo, Udinese and Verona and five clean sheets in a row.

Inter DWWWW

A two point gap over their opponents in the League, the Nerazzurri have also picked up 13 points from their last 5 games. Victories over Frosinone, Torino, Roma and Bologna, and three of those victories ended 1-0.

Previous Meetings

Napoli are unbeaten in their last nine matches against Inter, with the Nerazzurri last winning this fixture back in October 1997.

Last season, both games against each other ended in 2-2 draws. In this fixture last season Higuain and Hamsik had given the Partenopei 2-0 lead, before Palacio pulled one back and Icardi nicked a draw for Inter with a chipped penalty in the 87th minute.

Key Quotes
Maurizio Sarri
“We will never change our attitude or our football. Whatever the result, we’ll resume training on Tuesday the same way we left off.”
“If they are at the top after 13 weeks It means that it is not a coincidence. Inter will play their game, looking to win and we will do the same with our abilities.”
Roberto Mancini
“In these games the players have to give everything, Right now we’re ahead – we’re in first place and that’s very important.”
“Picking up a victory against Napoli would give us an enormous boost, but we always have to remember that there are a lot of games to come before it’s all decided.”
Key Player to Watch

Lorenzo Insigne

A lot of the discussion before the match has been about Higuain vs Icardi and how the Argentine duo are the two players to win the match for their teams. Lorenzo Insigne has been key to the way Napoli have started the season going forward in every way.

With 7 goals and 4 assists so far this season, the Italian magician has already bettered last season’s personal tally of goals.

Jeison Murillo

The Nerazzurri defender has been in excellent form since joining from Granada in the summer in a 10m euro deal. Alongside Miranda or Medel in defence the Colombian has hardly put a foot wrong and is one of the reasons Inter’s defence has kept nine clean sheets in 13 games, with man of the match performances against Juventus and Frosinone in recent weeks.

Up against Gonzalo Higuain, the two faced over for their countries as Colombia played Argentina and kept the “hitman” quiet throughout the match.

Can Fiorentina maintain their title challenge at Sassuolo?

Fiorentina will be looking to temporarily take the top-spot in Serie A this evening, with a victory over Sassuolo at the Mapei Stadium.

The Viola have the chance, early this evening, to move above both Inter and Napoli, before those two sides meet later in the day at the .Mapei Stadium. Fiorentina coach, Paulo Sousa, will be hoping that the Viola can put pressure on their title rivals, as we move into the second third of the season. Meanwhile, Sassuolo will themselves be hoping for a positive result, to ensure that they move back into fifth place in the table above Juventus and AC Milan, after those two teams were comfortable winners in the earlier Matchday 14 fixtures. The performances of both these sides so far this season have been somewhat welcome surprises, but last weekend saw both sides struggle in games that they would have undoubtedly coasted earlier in the season.

After successive 2-2 draws against Empoli and Basel, Sousa will be looking for the Viola to return to winning ways, and is likely to pick his strongest available line-up, for what will be a difficult away trip. Much will be expected of Nikola Kalinic who excelled when scoring twice after he came on as a second-half substitute against Empoli, meanwhile Federico Bernardeschi will be hoping to continue his impressive form this season, and build on the two goals he scored in the Europa League draw at Basel on Thursday evening. If matters are not going well for the Viola, Sousa will have little hesitation in quickly turning to Khouma Babacar to up the goal-scoring threat, particularly after the Senagalese player’s 2 goals in Fiorentina’s 3-1 victory in this fixture last season.

If Sassuolo are to emerge with anything from this fixture, then much will depend on Paolo Cannavaro and Francesco Acerbi nullifying the threat posed by Kalinic, and on their midfield trio of  Simone Missiroli, Francesco Magnanelli and Joseph Duncan disrupting the service provided to the Croatian striker by the Viola playmakers, Borja Valero and Josep Ilicic.

Sassuolo have Domenico Berardi missing through suspension after his dismissal in the Neroverdi’s 2-1 defeat away to Genoa last weekend, and the forward will be particularly missed as, like, Bernardeschi, his performances this season have seen his name mentioned as someone who should be receiving increasing consideration for a place in the Azzurri squad for Euro 2016. Fiorentina have a full squad to choose from, save for the missing Jakub Blaszczkowski, following his injury for Poland in the recent international friendly fixtures.

Sassuolo likely starting line-up (4-3-3): Consigli; Vrsaljko, Acerbi, Cannavaro, Peluso; Missiroli, Magnanelli, Duncan; Sansone, Defrel, Floro Flores.

Fiorentina likely starting line-up (3-4-2-1): Tatarasanu; Roncaglia, Rodriguez, Astori; Bernardeschi, Badelj, Vecino, Alonso; Ilicic, Valero; Kalinic.

Ballardini: “After Mandzukic’s Goal We Slowed Down.”

After his side’s 3-0 defeat to Juventus, Palermo boss Davide Ballardini expressed his dissatisfaction at the result but claims it wasn’t all bad.

Newly-appointed Palermo boss Ballardini believes his side didn’t play the worst of games and were only undone because they needed to push up for an equalizer. After the game he told reporters,:

“For about an hour, Palermo had a very good game. After Juventus’ goal, and this should never happen again, we slowed down. We had many problems going forward even if we tried creating chances. Palermo needs an identity and play as a team. We need to play good in attack and in defence.”

Are you missing something up front?

“We’ll use the guys we have. For fifty minutes, Giardino had a very good game. We have these players and we will see what they can do.”

Did Palermo have too much respect for Juventus tonight?

“We had to be more aggressive and press them higher up the pitch. We were a bit reluctant to do so, and we shouldn’t have been because with the characteristics that we have we could have caused them more problems.”

Allegri: “I Don’t Hope For Anything, I Believe In The Comeback.”

After Juventus’ convincing win against Palermo on Sunday night, Massimiliano Allegri highlighted that he still believes in the Scudetto.

With their win against Palermo, Juventus climb above Milan and Sassuolo in the table and was their fourth consecutive win in the league. After the game, Allegri told Sky Sports,:

“The players had a good game as a whole and in terms of intensity. We are coming off a game on Wednesday that drained a lot of energy from us. There was a risk when we didn’t close the game earlier but we did good. We could have scored a goal in the first half but we were able to find the breakthrough later. We had a great November between qualifying for the next stage of the Champions League and climbing up the table.”

What changed for you guys?

“The fact that we had fresher legs and good physical conditioning. Winning games helps you and the team has made some important progress. They know when to slow the game down or speed it up and keep the ball. They look compact and this was a good result.”

Morata is looking to make a difference with less minutes.

“He’s a 23-year-old player who needs to find continuity. This year he has to deal with different pressures instead of trying to win a starting spot from Tevez or Llorente. This year he is a starter and is treated like Dybala, Mandzukic, and Zaza. Some times he gets angry when things don’t go his way but at the end he will grow into a important player like he already is today.”

Roma are close. Do you hope for a draw tomorrow between Inter and Napoli?

“I don’t hope for anything, I believe in the comeback. We had a good November. The league is a long one, the team wasn’t all of a sudden bad but needed balance. I think it would be very nice to complete the comeback but we have to grow from a technical standpoint because games are won with intensity.”

You didn’t have many players in the box on crosses. How did you guys prepare for this game?

“We prepared for this game in one day, the ability to learn quickly is high. The important thing is to have people who understand what to do when something is said. It’s true that we didn’t have many people in the box on crosses and have to improve in this respect.”

Pogba is suspended. Is Khedira ready to play against Lazio?

“We’ll see. If he’s not there, someone else will play. We have to enjoy this victory while knowing that a tough game awaits us against Lazio.”

Zaza: “I Don’t Complain And I Never Will.”

Following his goal against Palermo, Juventus forward Simone Zaza expressed his satisfaction at the result and the bianconeri’s improving form.

Simone Zaza came on late for Paulo Dybala in his side’s victory against Palermo and netted a stoppage-time goal. The former Sassuolo man hasn’t gotten the most playing opportunities since coming over but has made the most of them. After the game, he told Mediaset Premium,:

“I would prefer to continue scoring goals and playing a bit more but I don’t complain and I never will. I’m enjoying the moment and I hope we can continue like this.”

The team is very solid.

“This always helped us even in the difficult moments. The veterans of the team let their voices be heard. Us younger players listened to them and the results speak for themselves.”

Have you guys set an objective?

“Climb the table. Our objective is to be in third place by January after the first round of games are complete. The objective is to keep winning.”

Roma, De Rossi “We must remain united and work hard”

Following a 6-1 loss to Barcelona, Roma were shut out at home losing 2-0 to Atalanta. Roma fans are upset and rumours are spreading regarding Rudi Garcia’s future.

Daniele De Rossi had plenty to say in several post match interviews, we recap the most salient points here.

On the match:

“We prepared well for this match with the hopes of cancelling the embarrassment of Barcelona but didn’t succeed. We were also a tiny bit unlucky but we must do better.”

On the current results:

“We have to remain united and work hard. We know there are 24 matches left to play and we have the quality to succeed and get as many points as possible.”

“Last year we won the derby and finished second, united without giving up on each other.”

On Garcia:

“We each have to share blame and responsibility, putting it all on the coach is senseless. When you go on the pitch and have better quality than your opponent and don’t take advantage of it, it is cause for concern.”

Final thoughts

“This is not our lowest moment, we’ve had worse. We must reflect on our performance and think about the next match, that is what counts at the moment.”

Serie B Week 15 Round-up

Another weekend of whirlwind action in Serie B that saw Crotone close in on top spot, while leaders Cagliari crashed and burned in Brescia. There were some big wins for clubs down the bottom, plus another manager has been sent for his tea. The question just remains where do we begin to review it.

I suppose the best place to begin is at the Stadio Rigamonti in Brescia where the Biancoazzurri thought table toppers a lesson or two with a thumping 4-0 win. To make matters much worse for the Rossoblu they are set to be without Captain Daniele Dessena for the foreseeable future after he suffered a sicking double leg fracture after an appalling tackle from Racine Coly which inexplicably only earned the defender a yellow card.

As for the opening goal of the game that came two minutes into the second half and it came via veteran hitman Andrea Caracciolo. Picking up the ball to the right hand side of the box the 34-year-old striker drilled it low and hard across Marco Storari in the goal and into the bottom left hand corner.

Ten minutes later it was two and Caracciolo had a hand in this one as well. A free kick from deep right was floated into the box where Caracciolo got free of his man and headed it down across the six-yard box to the awaiting Tomasz Kupisz who stuck it home and wheeled off in celebration whilst the Cagliari defence threw their hands up in the air in a desperate appeal for offside.

The league leaders were well off the pace and you could sense that Brescia could smell blood. 12 minutes from time they made it 3-0, this time courtesy of Carlos Embalo. The 21-year-old, on loan from Palermo, shot low at Storari’s left hand post, it should have been a reasonably comfortable save for the former Juventus man but it squirmed under his body and in.

The rout was completed in the 93rd minute when Kupisz got his second of the match by coolly rounding the keeper and tapping home. 4-0 it finished a huge win for Brescia and an equally huge loss for Cagliari.

Crotone are now back within one point of Cagliari at the top as they beat a flat lining Spezia side, now under the guidance of Mimo Di Carlo, 1-0 at the Alberto Picco. The only goal of the match coming 12 minutes in when Adrian Stoian just about stuck home his effort from the penalty spot.

Overall it was very much a workman like display from the Rossoblu and a performance that many would equate to a championship potential side. They took the lead early and were able to soak up any and all pressure opposed on them over the remainder of the match. It may have been far from tiki-taka but it is three points and Crotone are proving they are very much the real deal.

Bari remain in third spot after they missed the opportunity to take advantage of Cagliari’s slip up, after they were only able to draw 1-1 away to bottom side Como. It was the basement dwellers who took the lead in this one when 22-year-old former Milan youth team player Simone Ganz gave them the lead on 54 minutes. A cross in from the left hand side found the unmarked youngster in the dead centre in front of the goal and from there he could hardly miss and miss he did not easily heading it past Enrico Guarna.

The lead would only last until the 69th minute when a low cross from the left was strolled back towards the penalty spot to an on waiting Guiseppe De Luca who did the rest fro there. The remaining 20 minutes would largely belong to the Galletti but they were unable to find a way through and it finished 1-1.

Since last we spoke Livorno have gone and sacked manager Christian Panucci and replaced him with the veteran dugout presence of Bortolo Mutti. The former Palermo, Messina, Napoli and Reggina manager to name just a few made his debut in the Amaranto dugout on Saturday afternoon as his side played host to Novara.

Sadly, for Mister Mutti there would be no new manager bounce as the port town club fell to a 1-0 defeat. The only goal of the game coming on 44 minutes when a delicate chip over the top was raced onto by Pablo Gonazalez and Andrea Luci. Luci looked favourite to win it or barring that at least deny Gonzalez from getting there, however out rush Carlo Pinsoglio in the goal causing confusion and allowing Gonzalez to get in between them and flick it up and over the keeper and into the back of the net.

Novara remain fifth while Livorno drop a spot to ninth.

Back to Friday night and Cesena against Pescara in an eagerly anticipated match up. In the end though it proved not to be the most memorable of matches as an Antonio Ragusa header after a free kick was swung in from the left on 12 minutes turned out to be the only goal of the match.

The win for Cesena keeps them in the hunt at the top still only five points off Cagliari, Pescara meanwhile are now sixth.

Meanwhile Perugia are now up into eighth spot after they had a come from behind win away to Avellino. Davide Gavazzi had given the Lupi the lead on 36 minutes with a spectacular volley from outside the area that only gets better with repeat viewing.

The Grifone though got themselves back into the match four minutes into the second half Samuel Di Carmine the man that in the end was able to unlock the Avellino defence. The eventual winner came five minutes past the hour, Vittorio Parigini reacting quickest after an initial shot on goal turned out to be the perfect cross and at the back post Parigini slipped home.

Down at the bottom of the table there was massive wins for Ternana and Virtus Lanciano. The Rossoverde easily dispatching a disappointing Vicenza side 2-0 at the Libero Liberati. Lanciano though rode their luck at times to beat Latina 2-1. The away side had a chance to go 2-1 in front themselves from the spot only for Daniele Corvia to blast it over.

In Modena the pressure begins to mount on Hernan Crespo as his Gialloblu side lost 1-0 to Virtus Entella, Francesco Caputo with the only goal 11 minutes from time, time that was met with plenty of whistles and jeers by the Modena faithful.

Pro Vercelli are up to dizzying heights of 11th after they plunged Salernitana into further danger with a 2-1 win in Salerno. Matteo Mustacchio the man doing the damage as he scored both his sides goals. The first on ten minutes and the second on 77 minutes.

The final match of the weekend took place on Sunday evening and saw Ascoli and Trapani play out a 0-0 draw.

Sabatini: “It Won’t Be Easy To Get Out of This Situation.”

Roma sporting director Walter Sabatini expressed concern following his side’s 2-0 defeat at the hands of Atalanta on Sunday.

Roma continued their poor run of form today with a disappointing defeat against Atalanta. The loss comes just five days after their humiliating 6-1 defeat against Barcelona and confirms a rough patch for the giallorossi. After the game Sabatini told reporters,:

“We spoke with the staff and the management. Everyone must assume responsibility starting from me. It won’t be easy for us to get out of this situation, our belief is dwindling. The only way to get out of times like these is with generosity and honesty.”

What did you tell Garcia?

“That it’s a difficult moment and that the team is currently suffering. In Barcelona, the right team played in order to win. Then of course, what happened happened and it was difficult to come back from that. We have to assume responsibility, know where it went wrong, and correct it.”

What do you tell the fans?

“I would tell them not to lose faith. I know that at this moment this request will be responded to sarcastically but it’s what we want. We know football. We know that we need to sacrifice and show responsibility. No one could be absolved from responsibility. Not the manager or the club. We have to understand this crisis. It’s our duty, even the players. They can’t be fully free of responsibility either. They are strong but to say that today would be difficult.”

What happened after the international break?

“It’s ridiculous to say that after the break we have a different mentality. The international break and the injuries are no excuse. We must assume full responsibility. We will act in a united fashion. Here, no one is alone and we will solve these problems together.”

Garcia: “we can only win if we stick together”

From bad to worse for Garcia. After suffering a 6-1 loss by Barcelona midweek in the Champions League, Roma have now lost 2-0 Atalanta thanks to goals from Gomez and Denis. Here are Garcia’s post match comments:
“We didn’t put in a good performance. There isn’t much to take from tonight, we let them (Atalanta) control the pace of the game.”
“I have faith in this group, we’ll do the talking on the field, we must keep our mouths shut and be united and work to get out of this difficult moment.”
“I don’t think the Barcelona result had an effect on today’s result, we’ll prove that in the next couple games. I know it’s been a tough week, but the group can prove their worth by putting all of this behind them.”
“I’m angry and disappointed by today’s result, but we must get back to winning ways. We must do better. I’m not angry at just one person, but everyone, we can only win if we stick together.”
“I take responsibility, I prefer that the criticism is hit at me rather then the players.”
“We took a step back today, we wanted to move closer to the top but we failed.”
“With the return of some important players, I’m sure that the blue sky is just peeping out from behind the cloud.”
Garcia also was asked if the next two games are crucial to his Roma future, where he responded by saying “The next game is always important, we must win.”

Roma, Garcia: “It’s not a defeat that will break me”

Another blow to Roma’s campaign, Premium Sport interviewed Rudi Garcia after the 2-0 loss to Atalanta.

Garcia’s men took another defeat this week with a 2-0 loss at home to Atalanta Bergamo.

Another punch to the squad?

“We’re all upset and angry with ourselves, above all the performance. We let Atalanta play their game and have only ourselves to blame. We assume the responsibility, tomorrow we’ll see what we have to do go forward. This group demonstrated little in terms of being competitive, as what happened in the derby. We’re not looking for alibis, we have to do much better.  It’s not a defeat that will break me.”

Is your place on the bench in discussion?

“It’s a gift of the game, I want to win the next game of the season.”

Is it a loss that comes from the Barcelona game..?

“It’s been a really bad week, but I don’t think that they coincide. We gifted the first goal, but that can happen. We need a strong mentality to go forward, we’re exposed in this mindset. Atalanta defended well, and we didn’t do enough to score despite in the chances we had.

What’s happened to Roma?

“We can get better, Digne on the first goal made the right decision. He wasn’t sure that Moralez was offside and he lost the ball, we can’t lose the ball. When it went 0-1, nothing was lost, but in the second half we were spent and this is a problem. We have to get back to the short and combined play, tonight we didn’t do that.

Why did De Sanctis start?

He and Szczesny are even, Morgan trained well and he is not more or less responsible for what happened tonight.

How are you going to fix Roma?

“My work from tomorrow is to come in with my head held high at this moment, you can see the quality of the group in the difficult moments. Only though hard work will bring us to scoring more goals and we have to get better on the defensive level. We have to cancel out the individual errors and find our enthusiasm and joy in training..”

How do you respond to Pierpaolo Marino’s accusations on Twitter?

“How can one respond to something like this? Nothing”

Star-Studded Italian Legends Event Coming to Toronto

When Italian soccer fans of all ages see names like Salvatore Schillaci, Dino Baggio and Simone Perrotta, they no doubt will recall memories of each of those players performing for the Azzurri in a World Cup. They’ll remember each of them starring for different Italian squads on remarkable runs to the final stages of the competition in three separate World Cup tournaments. On March 5th, 2016, generations of Italian soccer fans will have the opportunity to unite and cheer on these and other former Italian stars once again when the first edition of a new venture called “Italian Football Heroes” will be staged in Toronto.

At the 1990 World Cup in Italy, Salvatore “Toto’” Schillaci became an instant Italian hero. Coming on as a substitute in Italy’s first game, Schillaci went on to score six goals in the tournament, claiming the Golden Boot as the leading scorer, and the Golden Ball as player of the tournament. Italy’s magical run however ended with a semifinal loss to Argentina and the Azzurri went on to capture the bronze medal with a win over England in the consolation final. An overnight sensation with the Azzurri, Schillaci’s club career in Italy didn’t produce as many memorable moments but he will forever be grateful for the opportunity he had to wear the Italian jersey.

“The highest honour I had was playing with Juventus,” Schillaci recalled in a recent interview from his home in Italy, “because it allowed me to reach the National Team. I achieved great success with the Azzurri. We had a great World Cup but were not able to win it, even if we had a great team, perhaps the greatest Italian team ever.

“That success with the national team has allowed me today to work abroad. I’m sought after for events such as this one coming up in Canada. An important accomplishment like this has perhaps only been achieved by Paolo Rossi and myself.”

“I was the first Italian to go to Asia. For me it was a positive experience. I think Italian players must show their passion and professionalism outside Italy’s borders.” – Salvatore Schillaci

After a brief stint with Inter, Schillaci ended his playing career in Japan, where he enjoyed his time. “I was the first Italian to go to Asia”, Schillaci proclaimed. “For me it was a positive experience. I think Italian players must show their passion and professionalism outside Italy’s borders.”

Schillaci is supportive of the recent trend of Italian players choosing to move abroad to play in Major League Soccer. “Soccer is growing rapidly in North America,” said Schillaci. “There are many teams investing in top talent. Giovinco, for instance, is still a National Team player and has demonstrated his value by winning awards. This only proves that players that go overseas are not too old or have somehow failed because Giovinco, at 28, could have played in Italy but made a lifestyle choice, as well as an economic one.

“He also wanted to enrich his intellectual makeup, to learn English. Of course he was tempted by a rich contract that he would not have earned in Italy. But he also wanted to prove himself against the best players outside of Italy. This is important because it opens up new markets and demonstrates Italian players can compete in other leagues around the world.”

While Simone Perrotta didn’t win individual awards at the World Cup, his experience was that much sweeter because he was able to lift the ultimate prize. The rugged, hard-working midfielder was one of the key components of Marcello Lippi’s Azzurri squad that captured the World Cup almost a decade ago in Germany.

“When you have the good fortune to win the World Cup,” Perrotta recalled in an interview from his Italian home, “beyond that there is nothing else. I didn’t win many trophies but I was satisfied with my career because a player’s satisfaction is not only measured by the number of trophies they win but also by the personal situations you experience with the team, the city and the fans.

“When you say the World Cup, it’s every kids’ dream. To wear the jersey, to play in the World Cup and to win it, that goes beyond any imagination, any dream.” – Simone Perrotta

“I remember the years at Roma and at Chievo, when we were a newly promoted side that was first in the league for three months and I was only 23, so those are also great moments. When you say the World Cup, it’s every kid’s dream. To play in the World Cup and to win it, that goes beyond any imagination, any dream.”

Perrotta, who was actually born in England but raised in Italy, is also a supporter of Italians playing abroad and looks favourably upon MLS. “It’s obviously a league that’s growing thanks in part to the fact that many world class players are performing there,” Perrotta said. “It’s certainly attractive for the experience to learn a new culture, a new language. English is universal so you can work in any industry. It’s also attractive on a professional level because, whereas in years past you would have been playing with, at best, semi-pro players, in the past decade, the league has improved thanks to so many experienced players.”

The man behind “Italian Football Heroes” is Italian media and marketing expert Federico Fantini. Through a sports business management course he founded, he developed a relationship with Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment, the Canadian sports empire that owns, among other franchises, Toronto FC of MLS. Taking notice of the large Italian community in the Greater Toronto Area, and with the backing of MLSE, Fantini proposed the idea for an Italian Legends showcase unlike any other. The event combines soccer and popular music, two of Italy’s greatest passions. The setting is the 8-thousand seat indoor arena, Ricoh Coliseum, an intimate venue that will bring fans closer to their heroes.

“Since this is our first attempt,” Fantini explained, “we felt it was better to strive for a sold out arena with an enthusiastic crowd and have people wanting tickets rather than going to a larger venue and only selling 25% of it. As a first time event, this initiative carries with it a great deal of risk. But we’re confident that the dimensions of the Ricoh are just the right size to create a positive ambience for the next event.
We’re looking to make this an annual event and, if the demand is there, we can take it to the Air Canada Centre or even to an expanded BMO Field in an open-air setting.”

“The idea of the legends is growing because big pro clubs are using their legendary stars as club ambassadors for their brand” – Federico Fantini

In fact, Fantini is already working on exporting the event to other prospective cities across Canada and around the world. “We’ve already been in contact with local groups to set up similar ventures in Vancouver, Montreal, Johannesburg, Buenos Aires, even China,” Fantini admitted. “There’s a lot of interest. The idea of the legends is growing because big pro clubs are using legends as club ambassadors for their brand. We want to form relationships with reliable contacts in those destinations.

“In South Africa,” continued Fantini, “there’s a significant Italian community, not as large as that in Canada, but we’re working with entrepreneurs there that will help us direct the promotion not only to the Italian market but also to other communities. South Africa has a respectable soccer culture thanks to the 2010 World Cup and the phenomenal growth since then. In China it may be a game with an international all star selection that will obviously attract more than just one ethnic community.”

In this first outing, the Italian Heroes squad will face a Canadian All-Star selection that includes Paul Stalteri, the all time record holder in appearances for the Canadian National Team. The format will be a 7-aside game played over three 20-minute periods, similar to hockey, with live entertainment during the intermissions. And, also like hockey, player substitutions will be made on the fly. A VIP meet and greet with players from both teams will precede the game. Popular Italian artist Enzo Ghinazzi (better known as “Pupo”) will perform and act as the event’s Master of Ceremonies.

Schillaci and Perrotta are enthusiastic about the event and can’t wait to return to Canada where they hope to be embraced by a community they both know quite well. “I’m happy to come back to Canada, and Toronto in particular,” Schillaci said. “I was just in Toronto recently. This is the third time I’ve travelled to Canada. I always enjoy meeting Italians in other parts of the world, particularly Sicilians as I am one.
“We’re a group of players who travel the world,” added Schillaci. “We were just recently in Congo and we were also in Russia. We meet Italians wherever we go so we just want to put a smile on their faces. We’re looking forward to meeting the Italian community.”
“We were (in Toronto) two years ago for a game against the Portuguese legends,” said Perrotta. “And it was nice to embrace the Italian community again. Plus, I’m originally from Calabria and there are many people from that region so for us it’s nice to embrace the community and offer a day of enjoyment for our countrymen.”

“It’s a way to see one another and to relive emotions that are part of our past,” continued Perrotta. “But the goal is to export our Made in Italy brand abroad where we always feel appreciated.”

Higuain vs. Icardi: How the Argentines match-up in Week 14

Heading into Serie A matchday 14, only two points separate the top two squads, Napoli and Inter Milan with 28 and 30 points respectively. This Monday will be a key match in deciding who can claim top spot in the table as the winter break approaches.

Napoli have been dangerous this season in the attacking third, recording the highest average shots in Serie A with 17.85 per game. Although Inter have struggled against Napoli in the recent past, they have had a number of impressive performances against other Serie A giants including Roma and Milan in recent weeks.

Both teams have been defensively sound, Napoli not conceding a goal in their last 5 matches while Inter have kept a clean sheet in their last 4 matches. So what will be the deciding factor in Monday’s match? The Argentine Strikers – Higuain for Napoli and Icardi for Inter.

NAPOLI – Gonzalo Higuain

Serie A Appearances: 13

Goals Scored: 10

Assists: 2

Minutes Played: 1,082

Since having a man-of-the-match performance against Juventus in late-September, Higuain has been on a roll in Serie A. The 27 year old had a 4-game scoring streak in the month of October and isn’t showing any signs of slowing down. His ability to dribble, hold onto the ball and make key passes to open up space for himself has been critical to find the back of the net 10 times this season.

Inter’s backline will likely enforce an offside strategy to frustrate Higuain’s runs from long-balls. The center striker will have to use creative runs to break through Felipe Melo and Miranda.

INTER – Mauro Icardi

Serie A Appearances: 11

Goals Scored: 4

Assists: 1

Minutes Played: 864

Overall, Inter have not scored a vast amount of goals per match this season. The nerazzurri have worked to prove their critics wrong of that stat by putting 4 goals past Frosinone last week, one of which came from Icardi as Inter displayed a commanding attack.

While Icardi hasn’t found his scoring touch similar to last season, which earned him the joint-capocannoniere title, he has remained an important asset for Inter’s offense. We have seen in the past his ability to step up when he is needed most. This week will be a key match for the 22 year old to show his qualities up front if Inter hope to keep their top-spot in the league. Icardi must work to increase his chances on net, as his average shots per game currently sits at 1.6 while Higuain records 4.1 per game.

Looking ahead, a critical factor to either Inter or Napoli securing three points will be the Argentine’s performances for both sides and ability to frustrate their opponent’s backline. Who will be the hero, Higuain or Icardi?

Milan, Mihajlović: “If we continue like this we can do well”

Siniša Mihajlović was interviewed by Sky Sports after the match Milan-Sampdoria, where his team won 4-1, playing their best match at the San Siro this season.

Excerpts of the interview courtesy of milannews.it

On the victory:

“We have only won one game, we did well, but the road ahead is still long.”

On Niang:

“Niang is an important player, he did very well in pre-season but then got hurt. Now he is back in form and is doing well, but he has already shown in Genoa what he is made from.”

On the match:

“I dedicate it to the lads, they played a very good game, I’m very happy especially for them. Today we played an almost perfect match. We saw quality of play, scoring opportunities, goals, pity for the goal we conceded. If we play like this we can have fun and entertain.”

On the formation:

“Playing in this manner, which is more like a 4-2-4, the players were closer to each other and you could make more combinations. It is what we always tried to do and weren’t able to because we never had three strikers. When Mario (Balotelli) returns we will have an attack arsenal that will entertain.”

On the penalty taker:

“They know who the shooter is, however if there is someone who feels more or less in form to take it they will decide this on the pitch. The important thing is that whoever takes the penalty scores.”

On the season:

“After the game against Napoli we changed formation, at the time we needed solid defense, we had to try not to concede goals. We found defensive solidity and we got good results. In the meantime, we have recovered some strikers such as Niang. Our goal was to play with the 4-4-2. When Mario (Balotelli) and (Jeremy) Menez return they we will have fun and entertain. Our goal is to finish the remaining games before the break with an average of two points per game. We have matches we can win and if we continue like this we can do well.”
