Fiorentina coach Paulo Sousa was pleased with his team’s performance despite being unable to hold a lead with 10 men, as they were held to a 2-2 draw with Basel in Europa League play.
In order for Fiorentina to advance, they must get a result and draw will suffice when they host Belenenses in two weeks time.
Sousa spoke with Sky Sports and shared the following after the match:
“I applaud my team because I am proud of the lads who managed the match well despite the unfortunate circumstances they had to deal with. A team who in difficulty does this well defending even without the ball must be applauded.”
On Roncaglia’s expulsion:
“There were many events that unfolded. With Facundo and the others we try to have control over our emotions. He must control himself to remain in the game. We must and want to grow, there are players who perhaps have more difficulty with this like Facundo but we want to improve because we need everyone. When he was sent off I felt we were going to suffer down a man but am proud of the team’s reaction on both sides of the pitch. We controlled the match with our possession and speed. We have to improve.”
On Bernardeschi:
“Today he scored two goals while getting involved in all the facets of the game, he knows he can dominate on the pitch in different roles. He works hard and can give a lot because he is young, and has lots of room for improvement. He sets an example for the others.”
On Borja Valero:
“He has a strong desire to play football and the harmony on the team makes him happy to play. He merits a spot with the national team (Spain). He must have fun with his teammates.”
On the referee:
“I do not like to talk about the refs post match and I would like to do the same today.”
Final thoughts:
“The team is maturing into a high performing group with the will to defend well. Our opponent created scoring chances only from two corner kicks. I have lots of confidence facing the future with these lads.”
