Italian Football Daily writer Sebastian Fazio gives his thoughts on Roma’s debacle in Catalonia this evening.
Roma traveled to Barcelona to take on the European champions on match day 5 of the UEFA Champions League. Going into the match the hopes weren’t high and the scoreline proved why. Roma lost 6-1. If it wasn’t for an Edin Dzeko goal at the 90th Roma would have lost 6-0.. Worse then 7-1 at home vs Bayern? Probably not, but still one of the worst results Roma have taken in the past couple years.
The fact that Roma lost shouldn’t come to a surprise but the way it happened should. Garcia, usually a coach who demands his team to give 110%, DIDNT. In fact, Roma gave near to nothing. They didn’t make Barcelona work for anything, everything came easy for Barca. No care from the players as they went into the game thinking it was already over which is never the right mentality. Roma shut down and let Barcelona break them and tear them apart. Maicon post match said ‘We didn’t nothing today, we must put this behind us.” Barcelona just kept attacking and giving it to them. Suarez, Messi and Neymar kept opening up the defence. The high line offside trap tactic from Garcia clearly didn’t work. The mentality was weak from the get go and Roma were never getting anything from this match with that mentality. In his post match press conference, Garcia stated how Barcelona are currently “unbeatable” and that there was “only so much Roma could have done”.
There is a positive though, Roma still control their destiny. Somehow. Earlier today BATE tied to Leverkusen, which means Roma remain in 2nd going into the last match day. All Roma need to do is win (and a tie if Leverkusen tie/lose to Barca). But as we seen today Roma need to put the word “win” in their heads. They somehow control their destiny despite losing 6-1 on the second last match day, some will call it lucky some will call it tactical, whatever it is, Roma can’t screw up.
Today is a day to forget for all Roma fans. The #GarciaOut tweets have already started but it’s unlikely he is getting sacked and I’m going to be honest; rightfully so. It’s a day to forget, can Garcia and Roma bounce back and get back on track?
