Monday night’s fixture saw Napoli host Inter Milan in a top of the table clash at the Stadio San Paolo.
The match was very anticipated, and it lived up to all of the hype, starting off with a bang. 60 seconds into the game Higuain pounced on an asleep Inter Milan defense and fired home giving the hosts a 1-0 lead. What a great start to a huge match for the Partenopei. As the half went on, Inter had numerous looks on goal however were misfiring at every chance. Napoli kept most of the possession whereas Inter used more gut and willingness to outdo Maurizio Sarri’s tactics. Later on, Yuto Nagatomo was carded twice for reckless challenges and was ultimately kicked out of the match. This went on to not only deplete Inter’s numbers in the match, it also (almost) ended up benefitting them oddly enough.
In the second half, Napoli were again the stronger of the two sides playing a commanding football, trying to double their lead. In the 62′ Higuain pounced on a mistake by Miranda and Murillo to double the partenopei’s lead. This was the turning point of the match. Remember how it was said that the nerazzurri being down to 10 men almost ended up benefitting them? Well Napoli backed off a lot of their pressure for the most part of the last 25 minutes of the match, almost gifting Inter a point. Ljajic scored on Inter’s first shot on target of the night in the 67′ to cut Napoli’s lead in half, what a rollercoaster ride of a finish was there in store for our viewing pleasure. Inter almost came close to finding the equalizer twice in stoppage time. Once off of a Jovetic header that hit the post, then another in the dying moments where Miranda flicked on a beautiful Biabiany cross towards goal, however Reina was up to the task and parried it away giving Napoli a humongous 3 points, leapfrogging them into first place.
