In our weekly feature, here on Italian Football Daily, we take a look at the weekend performances of Italian players currently based in the top two divisions in England.
ENGLISH PREMIER LEAGUE
Claudio Ranieri (Manager – Leicester City)
Claudio Ranieri’s Leicester City were held to a 1-1 draw at home to Manchester United on Saturday evening. The result meant that Leicester slipped to second in the table, having last week held the top-spot for the first time in 13 years.
Matteo Darmian (Manchester United)
Matteo Darmian played the full 90 minutes at right wing-back in Manchester United’s 1-1 draw at Leicester City. The former Torino player put in a solid performance, although at times seemed to lack confidence and match sharpness due to having missed many of United’s games over the last month. Darmian did however come close to winning the game for United in the last minute, but his left foot shot from the edge of the box just went narrowly over.
Graziano Pelle (Southampton)
Graziano Pelle missed Southampton’s 3-1 defeat at Manchester City due to suspension having picked up his fifth yellow card of the season in the Saints’ 1-0 defeat at home to Stoke City last weekend.
Fabio Borini & Vito Mannone (Sunderland)
Both Fabio Borini and Vito Mannone were unused substitutes in Sunderland’s 2-0 victory over Stoke at the Stadium of Light.
Angelo Ogbonna (West Ham United)
Angelo Ogbonna put in an impressive performance in West Ham United’s 1-1 draw at home to West Bromwich Albion on Sunday afternoon. He and fellow centre-half, Winston Reid, looked likely to keep the West Brom attack at bay with ease, however Reid’s own goal on the 50 minute mark, cost The Hammers the three points they should have taken.
Alessandro Diamanti (Watford)
Alessandro Diamanti was, once again, an unused substitute in Watford’s 3-2 victory away at Aston Villa. Diamanti has hardly featured for The Hornets so far this season, and will likely look to return to Serie A in the January transfer window.
ENGLISH CHAMPIONSHIP
Fernando Forestieri (Sheffield Wednesday)
Sheffield Wednesday continued their excellent recent form recently, coming from 2-0 down to snatch a 2-2 draw at Blackburn Rovers. Although Forestieri showed much effort, he was not as influential as he has been over the past few weeks. Despite that, he did fire over a long range effort over the bar mid-way through the first half, before turning creator by providing a low cross which Gary Hooper was just unable to make contact with.
Diego Fabbrini (on loan from Watford) & Michael Agazzi (Middlesbrough)
Middlesbrough moved up to second place in the Championship after a 2-0 win away at Huddersfield Town. Diego Fabbrini played only 63 minutes of Boro’ victory, before being substituted after a subdued performance.
Once again, Michael Agazzi did not feature in Middlesbrough’s squad for this fixture.
Mirco Antenucci, Giuseppe Bellusci, Marco Silvestri & Tommaso Bianchi (Leeds United)
Massimo Cellino’s Leeds United suffered yet another defeat at the weekend, this time away at Queens Park Rangers 1-0.
Marco Silvestri, Mirco Antenucci and Giuseppe Bellusci all started the game, but were unable to inspire the Whites to a win. Shortly after half-time, Silvestre was beaten by a header from Charlie Austen from a QPR, a goal which turned out to be the winner. He did well, however, to keep the score at 1-0, making two excellent saves midway through the second half. Antenucci was substituted after 80 minutes after failing to make an impact on the game.
Francesco Pisano (Bolton Wanderers)
Francesco Pisano was not included in Bolton Wanderers’ squad for their game at home to Brentford on Monday evening.
Gabriele Angella (Queens Park Rangers – on loan from Watford)
Gabrielle Angella was an unused substitute in QPR’s 1-0 win at home to Massimo Cellino’s Leeds United.
Federico Macheda (Cardiff City)
Federico Macheda was a late substitute, and therefore had little time to make an impact in Cardiff City’s 2-2 draw at home to Burnley. The appearance was Macheda’s first for several months after finally recovering from surgery to repair a disc injury.
Diego De Girolamo (Sheffield United)
Diego De Girolamo once again missed out on selection for Sheffield United’s 1-1 draw away at local rivals, Barnsley.
