Antonio Conte spoke briefly to Rai Sport after his Italy’s 1-0 victory over Bulgaria on Sunday night in Palermo.
“We managed six points in two games,” he said. “I’m a little disappointed by this situation though where we aren’t creating enough scoring opportunities and the result is always hanging in the balance. We deserved to score more, really, but I’m pleased with the effort on display tonight.”
Midfielder Marco Verratti was widely considered the man of the match, but Conte wouldn’t say much: “Verratti? I don’t like to speak about individuals. Of course Marco is a player you can count on, but he also has a lot to learn.”
Goalkeeper and captain Gigi Buffon marked his 150th appearance for the national team tonight, and Conte had words also for him: “Buffon only had to make one save tonight, and one that we gifted to Bulgaria. But he’s a guarantee in the back.”
A final judgement on the match: “We have to be stronger and tougher in attack, and take advantage of every chance we create.”
