Fiorentina Abroad – International Duty Recap

During the international break, twelve Fiorentina players were called up for international duty. We recap their performances here.

By John Fiorentini @johnfiorentini and Adamo Ritacco @adamoritacco

Fiorentina callups:

Manuel Pasqual (Italy), Jakub Blaszczykowski (Poland), Nenad Tomovic (Serbia), Gonzalo Rodriguez and Facundo Roncaglia (Argentina),  Milan Badelj, Nikola Kalinic and Ante Rebic (Croatia), Josip Ilicic (Slovenia), Matias Fernandez (Chile), Ciprian Tatarusanu (Romania), Federico Bernardeschi (U21 Italy)

Pasqual:

After managing to earn a call up under Antonio Conte, the Fiorentina left back featured in Italy’s 1-0 win over Malta, showing quite a disappointing display. The player failed to feature in his side’s match up against Bolivia, which ended 1-0 in the Azzurri’s favour, putting them at the top of group H.

Blaszczykowski (Kuba):

Recently signed Jakub Blaszczykowski managed to assist his national side as Poland claimed an resounding 8-1 victory over Gibraltar, in which the former Borussia Dortmund man scored himself a penalty. Unfortunately for them, their previous 3-1 loss to Germany leaves them 2nd in the group, only 2 points behind the reigning World Cup winners.

Tomovic:

La Viola’s Nenad Tomovic came out of this international break with a decent performance. Despite not recording a goal or assist, the Serbian was able to help his side in a 2-0 win over Armenia, although, later on losing 2-0 to Euro 2016 hosts France putting them at the bottom of group I.

Rodriguez:

Although not being able to feature in Argentina’s match up against Mexico, Fiorentina’s captain managed to start against Bolivia, which faced a 7-0 defeat. After keeping the clean sheet, the player must feel a sense of joy being able to get the job done.

Roncaglia:

The Argentinian international featured for his side in their friendly match up against Mexico, which ended 2-2. Later on, Argentina took on Bolivia, which led to a 7-0 hammering, with Roncaglia making his appearance in the 77th minute off the bench. Overall, the player should be more or less satisfied with his performances.

Badelj:

Badelj started the game for Niko Kovac’s team vs Azerbaijan, but was replaced just before the hour mark by Mateo Kovacic. Despite having put in a solid performance alongside more high profile midfield names such as Ivan Rakitic and Luka Modric, Croatia wasted several chances to score and match ended 0-0. He did not play in the subsequent match, a 2-0 loss to Norway.

Kalinic:

Kalinic replaced recent Internazionale signing, Ivan Perisic, in the 83rd minute, as Croatia looked to try and pinch the goal that would cement their position as group leaders and almost certainly assure their place at France 2016. Although he made his presence felt in his short time on the pitch, Kalinic was unable to influence the score-line. The next match vs Norway, Kalinic did come on as a 72nd minute substitute for the visitors in place of Barcelona’s Rakitic, but was largely ineffective as the Croats were unable to reverse the 2-0 score-line.

Rebic:

Rebic did not play in either qualifier.

Ilicic:

Ilicic made his 30th appearance for Slovenia in their 3-2 defeat away to Switzerland. Ilicic provided the assist for Slovenia’s first goal; leading a rare counter-attack and threading an inch-perfect pass through the Swiss defence for Milivoje Novakovic to run onto and slot past Yann Sommer in the Swiss goal. Ilicic was replaced in the 88th minute, as Slovenia looked to hold onto a 2-2 draw, but a 94th minute winner saw the Swiss run out winners after overcoming a two goal deficit.

Ilicic played 55 minutes as Slovenia moved into 3rd place in Group E after a 1-0 win at home to Estonia. The Viola man had one shot on target but was unable to contribute significantly to the game before he was replaced by Zlatan Ljubijankič.

Fernandez:

Fernandez played the full ninety minutes for Chile during their friendly match against Paraguay at the Estadio Nacional in Santiago. The Chileans ran out 3-2 winners, with the Viola man playing a key role in holding midfield.

Tatarasanu:

Tatarasanu made two excellent saves in keeping a clean sheet as Romania drew 0-0 away to Hungary in Group F to maintain their position in second place in the group ahead of the Magyars.

Tatarasanu kept a further clean sheet in Romania’s 0-0 draw away to Hungary, to maintain their position in second place in Group F, one point behind Northern Ireland. Tatarasanu was tested on 3 occasions during the game, but managed to repel the Magyars to make Romania favourites to make France 2016 ahead of their hosts.

Bernardeschi:

Fiorentina’s young stud showed quite a promising display for the Azzurrini, being active all match long, leading to the starlet netting the winner from the penalty spot in their 1-0 win over Slovenia, as they begin their Euro Qualifying campaign.
