During the international break, thirteen Juventus players were called up for international duty. We recap their performances here.
Juventus callups:
Gianluigi Buffon (Italy), Giorgio Chiellini (Italy), Leonardo Bonucci (Italy), Andrea Barzagli (Italy), Simone Zaza (Italy), Paul Pogba (France), Patrice Evra (France), Mario Mandzukic (Croatia), Stephan Lichtsteiner (Switzerland), Martin Caceres (Uruguay), Roberto Pereyra (Argentina), Daniele Rugani (U21 Italy), Emil Audero (U19 Italy).
Gianluigi Buffon: The veteran shot-stopper featured in both of Italy’s games in this international break and picked up two clean sheets against Malta and Bulgaria. Against the Bulgarians, Buffon made two world class saves to gift his side the three points.
Giorgio Chiellini: The Juventus defender, like his goalkeeper, played the full ninety minutes against Bulgaria and Malta and picked up two clean sheets. Chiellini, albeit against weak opposition, looked assured throughout the break.
Leonardo Bonucci: The former Bari man started alongside Chiellini against both Malta and Bulgaria and was arguably Italy’s best defender over the course of the international break. Bonucci’s ability to distribute the ball out of the key has emerged as a key feature in Conte’s Italy.
Simone Zaza: The young forward only had the opportunity to play in the last twenty minutes of Italy’s game against Bulgaria. No real impact noted.
Daniele Rugani: Rugani featured for Italy against Slovenia in U21 action and played the full game. The defender picked up a booking but was instrumental in his side’s clean sheet.
Emil Audero: The young shot-stopper was an unused substitute in Italy’s victory over Ireland by a score of 2-1.
Andrea Barzagli: Did not play.
Paul Pogba: The midfielder started in both of his side’s friendly victories against Portugal and Serbia. The Frenchman lasted the full ninety on both occasions and put in two accomplished performances. His play with the national team is somewhat refreshing given his initial struggles to the new season.
Patrice Evra: The former Manchester United man looked reckless against Portugal and was lucky to not be sent off. Moreover, he was caught out of position on several occasions. Evra was later dropped for the friendly against Serbia and did not feature at all.
Mario Mandzukic: Since completing his move to Juventus, the Croatian striker has looked off the pace in terms of finishing. This unfortunate trend would continue for him over the international break as he failed to find the back of the net against both Azerbaijan and Norway. In addition to this, the former Atletico man will be kicking himself as he had the chances to propel his side to victory and Croatia now sit third in the group.
Stephan Lichtsteiner: The Swiss international played every minute of this international break. In the first game, Lichtsteiner picked up a booking in his side’s come-from-behind victory against Slovenia. However, in his next game Switzerland lost 2-0 to England while the Juventus man played the full ninety minutes. He was his usual industrious self down the right hand side.
Martin Caceres: The Uruguayan international started in both his side’s friendlies against Costa Rica and Panama. Against Panama, the defender played the full ninety minutes and earned a clean sheet and a win for his efforts. The game against Costa Rica wouldn’t prove to be as kind as Caceres was booked in Uruguay’s 1-0 defeat.
Roberto Pereyra: The former Udinese man featured in both Argentina’s friendlies against Bolivia and Mexico. Pereyra played the full ninety minutes in Argentina’s 7-0 win over Bolivia and provided an assist. Against Mexico, on the other hand, the attacking midfielder came on as a substitute in the last fourteen minutes of action. Argentina subsequently scored to draw the game level at two.
