Pioli: “Positive response from the players”

Biancolesti manager Stefano Pioli was pleased at the reaction of his players in last night’s 2-0 win over Udinese in the Olimpico.

Before the international break Lazio had suffered big defeats to Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League, followed by a 4-0 humiliation at Chievo last time out.

New loan signing Alessandro Matri came off the bench to hit the back of the net twice on debut.

“I think we read the game well during a tricky time and against a difficult opponent,” Pioli told Sky Sport Italia.

“There is room for improvement, but I saw a positive response in terms of attitude. This result will boost our confidence, and we cannot look at what has gone before. We have the squad to be competitive in every game.”

31-year-old Matri bagged his 91st and 92nd Serie A goals in typical fashion, stabbing home from close range, and capitalizing on a defensive error 15 minutes from time to put the game beyond i Zebrette.

His manager said: “I was not surprised by his impact. He hasn’t got match fitness yet, but we signed him because he’s a great striker. His condition will improve in time.”

Matri’s goals have moved Le Aquille up to eighth in the table, but still three points off of Inter at the top.

Pioli’s men travel to Stadio San Paolo next weekend to face off against a struggling Napoli side who currently lie in 14th position in Serie A, and are yet to taste victory so far this season.
